Are you trained in teaching or cultural interpretation? If you ever quit YT, pls consider becoming a professor or museum educator or such…you’re very good at the academic part of this, but listeners won’t notice, you integrate solid analysis & exposition into a compelling story. And you do have a VOICE so I am sure you can pick up acting jobs, but don’t deny the world your intellect in anything you do! *My aunt & uncle were in the cult in the 60s & 70s (my aunt is still alive, she went hardcore fundie & I’m pretty sure it’s all the same to her: do what men say. I didn't know who he was until my boss explained that years before, at the previous location of my work, Ron worked next door and came in so often to talk that one day he had to warn her that the church was now watching her business. She started noticing strange things happening and knew he was telling the truth. At one point the church tried to discredit him by saying he was convicted and served time for soliciting sex from a sex worker, but my boss confirmed that the time they claim he was in prison, she was seeing him go into work every day. As for this topic... I did want to casually say something during a conversation, like 'How was your weekend? I got to see my brother and sister-in-law ' or something, but it never happened. I never let on I knew who he was or asked any direct questions, I didn't want to upset him or my boss. Ron was a very nice guy, super friendly and easy to talk to. I'm 50/50 on whether Shelly is alive or dead, but I wonder if she started to doubt the church the same way Remini had, and that was why they made her disappear. She may have been isolated and tormented until she was mentally broken, so if she's even alive, at this point that would mean she's likely unable to function outside the church's supervision. Could have the added bonus of making the church look even more sinister and scary to ward off criticism, especially in the face of increasing public ridicule from South Park and others.

I usually don't give silly foreign pronunciations a second thought, but Witcheeetuh is so funny to me rn 😂😂😂 And honestly, that's exactly how Witchita looks like it should be pronounced. I wouldn't be surprised if Witcheeetuh is closer to the pronunciation of the original word. I assume Wich-it-tah is an anglicized version of a Native word.

I'm not saying I think Shelly is dead, but that I think your reasoning for why she probably isn't is flawed. Scientology owns land everywhere in the US, including rural areas. It wouldn't be difficult for them to hide the body, and keep telling the police that they clearly have a close relationship with to stop asking. A coverup isn't always complicated.

These people are crazy awful scam artists but I think the worst part about them is that we'll be stuck with them for at least 1 billion years! 😂

It's hard to understand why people sink so much money into what is nothing more than a cult that got way out of hand a long time ago. Excellent content as always though

Being out of touch with reality. Wnting to stroke your own ego and feel special. Wanting a community. Lonliness. Their parents did it first and they adopted the lifestyle. There are lots of reasons.

This was an outstanding deep dive as always. Another excellent resource to find out even more about David's little problem is the podcast Some Place Underneath (published by Last Podcast on the Left), they did a two part episode about Shelly back in 2020 iirc Scientology is so creepy and bizarre and dangerous. I feel so so bad for her. Talk about being in the wrong place at the right time, jeez

Someone said in the comment that David miscavige is 5'3 and that it bothers him when it is brought up so yeah. David Miscavige is 5'3. Five feet 3 inches.

I’ll forever be grateful for Matt and Trey for outing Scientology for the brain dead cult it is, apparently you have to be a high level to learn about the aliens and that cost a crap ton, but they just told the story in their episode lmao

If by "religion" you mean a way to start an abusive cult/pyramid scheme and get out of paying taxes you would be right. Hubbard is as ridiculous as Joseph Smith and Mormonism. Anyone claiming to speak directly to god or have attained enlightenment is nuts.

Can we please get a movie/documentary in the works with Daniel Craig or the actor who plays Mike Ross from Suits to play David MisCavige? They would be PERFECT roles for them. There are so many actresses that could play Shelley as well. Awesome video as always Internet Investigator!

What's even crazier is the metal band TOOL, who are not and have never been members of the Church of Scientology, actually played some shows at the church in LA. You can find some footage here on KZbin but it's not very good. I'm not sure if there's any other non-scientologists who have ever played a concert on their property and even TOOL themselves aren't really sure how they got booked to play there so it's pretty insane.

I wonder if the agent/booking manager/whoever at the time was a scientologist? That's WILD, I've never heard that before

whilst I'm grateful you are covering this please go careful when it comes to scientology, Stephanie Harlow tried to do a series on this subject and after one episode had to stop because of the issues she was having with the Scientologists.
