I had Scientologists in my family,* so I’m familiar with the vocab & 💩 - you did such a great job with the background, I loved how you interwove it with Shelly’s narrative, putting it into the context of her story, rather than giving a dry & disconnected history lesson first or relying on other creators entirely. Are you trained in teaching or cultural interpretation? If you ever quit YT, pls consider becoming a professor or museum educator or such…you’re very good at the academic part of this, but listeners won’t notice, you integrate solid analysis & exposition into a compelling story. And you do have a VOICE so I am sure you can pick up acting jobs, but don’t deny the world your intellect in anything you do! *My aunt & uncle were in the cult in the 60s & 70s (my aunt is still alive, she went hardcore fundie & I’m pretty sure it’s all the same to her: do what men say. Although her abusive husband did die in his 50s, the same year my aunt told my grandma she wanted a divorce…no idea how that got left in grammas journals but it did lol)

I have several family members who were part of it (they used to be big into the real estate boom around LA in the 50s & San Bernardino during the 70s). I work IT at a “major entertainment studio’s” archive about an hour South of the Scientology main campus. I’ve had access to the Scientology library’s internal server for the better part of 3 years due to my familial relationship with one current member. SEVERAL former members have also given me video & written/printed internal memos/emails/completed forms of correspondence within the Church. The FBI & CIA have plenty of evidence & refuse to prosecute, as there are also Scientology plants/moles within both agencies that have “collateral” that keeps them at a sort of standstill. Look up WikiLeaks 2011/2013 Scientology leak to get an idea of just the tip of the iceberg of what has been discovered.

im going to be honest, i think shelly is no longer with us. but i don’t think its because she was murdered, i think the most likely outcome is that she may have taken her life into her own hands. her father had just died, she had just gotten into the deepest shit with the oppressive cult she was trapped in and was facing extremely harsh punishment, and the cult is openly saying she is “not missing.” If it was a murder I think that would have come out by now, thats why i’m willing to bet she is deceased but not from murder. she may have also died from stress in a heart attack, aneurysm or stroke, who knows.

I was acquaintances with Ron Mscavige Jr. He was friends with my boss at my old job and would come in during football season to talk about how their teams were doing (Ron Jr is an Eagles fan, Ron Sr is a Packers fan). I didn't know who he was until my boss explained that years before, at the previous location of my work, Ron worked next door and came in so often to talk that one day he had to warn her that the church was now watching her business. She started noticing strange things happening and knew he was telling the truth. At one point the church tried to discredit him by saying he was convicted and served time for soliciting sex from a sex worker, but my boss confirmed that the time they claim he was in prison, she was seeing him go into work every day. As for this topic... I did want to casually say something during a conversation, like 'How was your weekend? I got to see my brother and sister-in-law ' or something, but it never happened. I never let on I knew who he was or asked any direct questions, I didn't want to upset him or my boss. Ron was a very nice guy, super friendly and easy to talk to. I haven't talked to him in years, I hope he is going alright.

My guess is she contracted some life threatening disease or cancer. Since that is not allowed within the doctrine she was hidden away even though she managed to treat her condition. That’s the only way I can justify that she is alive and “OK”.

I'm 50/50 on whether Shelly is alive or dead, but I wonder if she started to doubt the church the same way Remini had, and that was why they made her disappear. She may have been isolated and tormented until she was mentally broken, so if she's even alive, at this point that would mean she's likely unable to function outside the church's supervision. Could have the added bonus of making the church look even more sinister and scary to ward off criticism, especially in the face of increasing public ridicule from South Park and others.

when my sister and i were kids, she had a tutor who worked in the area between downtown clearwater/ dunedin, and the business she worked for had a TON of Hubbards books, and would occasionally give them to us when we were there. Its also so crazy being in the area because you have this giant Ft. Harrison 'compound' literally across the street from the county courthouse, a mile drive from clearwater beach, and you see people wearing their uniforms walking around. long sleeve shirt, vest, long pants and everything even in the 90+ F weather.

There have been some excellent KZbin videos about Scientology recently. There’s one that focuses on Tom Cruise it’s bonkers, but I can’t think of the channel that released it. Anyway…love this long form format from you. I’m sure it takes a ton of time and effort to produce a video of this caliber. Well done!!

I usually don't give silly foreign pronunciations a second thought, but Witcheeetuh is so funny to me rn 😂😂😂 And honestly, that's exactly how Witchita looks like it should be pronounced. I wouldn't be surprised if Witcheeetuh is closer to the pronunciation of the original word. I assume Wich-it-tah is an anglicized version of a Native word.

I'm not saying I think Shelly is dead, but that I think your reasoning for why she probably isn't is flawed. Scientology owns land everywhere in the US, including rural areas. It wouldn't be difficult for them to hide the body, and keep telling the police that they clearly have a close relationship with to stop asking. A coverup isn't always complicated.

This was an outstanding deep dive as always. Another excellent resource to find out even more about David's little problem is the podcast Some Place Underneath (published by Last Podcast on the Left), they did a two part episode about Shelly back in 2020 iirc Scientology is so creepy and bizarre and dangerous. I feel so so bad for her. Talk about being in the wrong place at the right time, jeez

If by "religion" you mean a way to start an abusive cult/pyramid scheme and get out of paying taxes you would be right. Hubbard is as ridiculous as Joseph Smith and Mormonism. Anyone claiming to speak directly to god or have attained enlightenment is nuts.

What's even crazier is the metal band TOOL, who are not and have never been members of the Church of Scientology, actually played some shows at the church in LA. You can find some footage here on KZbin but it's not very good. I'm not sure if there's any other non-scientologists who have ever played a concert on their property and even TOOL themselves aren't really sure how they got booked to play there so it's pretty insane.
