Hamdanis were a Shiite dynasty who ruled the Sunni majority in the Levant for more than a century during the Abbasid era. In this poem, Al-Mutanabbi celebrates their victories over the Byzantine Empire.

For the Delight of your eyes, my heart suffered and is suffering. And for the sake of love, went all what I lost, and the rest is going. I wasn't a man who would fall in love. But whoever sees your eyelids will fall. Between satisfaction, anger, propinquity and remoteness, there is room for the glistening tears to run. The sweetest passion is what keeps the lover in doubt Between union and separation, hanging forever between hope and fear. Yet know, many a conceited girl, proud of her juvenility, got impressed by my youthfulness. And many a white-toothed girl with a sweety mouth.. I turned my lips away from her, so she kissed my hair. And many girls with gazelle-like necks just like, passed by me and I didn't even bear to look at their jewelry. Not all lovers would act virtuously like me when they meet privily. Nor could they make their loved ones proud of their deeds in war. May Allah bless the days of youth, and bestow the please of drinking on them. As you wear the mantle of time enjoying it, you continue to wear out, and it remains intact. Unmatched were the glances on the day of departure, sending every fatal stare of every frightened eye. Quivering with dismay as if their balls were floating on mercury. On a night when the tears obstructed vision. When the fear of separation spoiled the joy of farewell. We said goodbye while separation was destroying our hearts, The way the Emir's Lances destroy the heart of a phalanx. They are decisive & penetrating that chainmails are just spiderwebs against them. And well-guided to target army lords, as if they're trained to pick heroes' souls... Ripping every piece of their armor and every breastplate, And breaking every wall and every trench after them. He raids with them everywhere between Luqan and Wasit, And stocks of them between the Euphrates and Jelleq. And returns them red after the battle, as if the intact lances Are crying blood for the broken ones. So do not report what I say to him. For indeed, he is brave, once stabbing is mentioned, he craves fighting. His fingers strike with the blades of swords, and his tongue masters the art of eloquent speech. Begging him is like asking the rain for a drop. And blaming him is like ordering the stars to slow down. You bestowed lavishly until you became commendable in every religion. And until you nailed praise in every language. The Byzantine king saw your liking for munificence. So he took the role of a scrounged flatterer. And resignedly left the Samhari spears to him, Who is better at stabbing and more skillful. And wrote to you from a remote land, That is not far from the fast horses around you. And when his messenger followed your path, he walked on nothing but cracked heads. And when he came close, he got astonished, By the shininess of the bright armor plates. He elevated on the carpet to you, not sure, If he is walking towards the sea or elevating to the moon. Enemies found no way to turn you away from their souls, Better than submission and pleasant words. You used to write messages to him before on the domestikos' nape! So if you assure him safety, he already begged for it. And if you treat him with the sword, he deserves it. Did the shiny swords leave any captive to be ransomed? Or any slave to be freed? They ran into the blades like the flocks of pica. And tasted them in order, rank after rank. With the light of Saiful Dowla, I reached a lofty rank that I choose, Over owning all that is between the east and the west. When he wants to make fun of a bearded idiot, He points at the dust and says: catch up with him. I didn't mean to cause sadness to envies, but whoever challenges the sea will drown. The Emir tests people with his genius. And takes his eyes off the fabrication of every liar. As glancing with the eye is useless, if the heart is not attentive. O one who is wanted, take refuge in him, you get protected. And one who is deprived, head for him, you will be provided. O you, the most cowardly of the army, Keep company with him, you will become brave. And the bravest of the brave, separate with him, you will become a coward. The more his enemis plot to undermine his glory, the more his fortune flares up to spoil their efforts. As merit alone doesn't bring victory. Unless it's possessed by a blessed and well-backed one.

@ArabicVocalPoetry
@ArabicVocalPoetry 2 жыл бұрын
First, the prophecy claiming thing is debatable and I don't have enough knowledge to have a conclusion about it. Also the poetry we publish for him doesn't include something that is contrary to Islam so I don't think it's a big deal. Second, we publish poetry for its social/literary/linguistic/historical value, that doesn't mean necessarily we agree with everything we publish or that we aim to glorify every poet or every character mentioned in these works. The aim is to give a reasonable and roughly accurate representation of both Arab and Islamic culture/values/history over time through poetry. We are trying to avoid 3 stereotypes while selecting poetry: 1- Muslim idealists who focus on a specific type of cultural/historical content to portray a specific ideal picture according to their expectations. 2- A specific type of western researchers who are eager to prove the existence of modern western values through Arab & Islamic history (e.g. Wine, sexual relations, sodomy..etc) 3- Eggheads who publish everything they find regardless of its content, context, and ruling in Islam. And to be honest: the main goal of this thing is to have some fun introducing high quality stuff to our non-Arabic-speaker bros :)

The Hamdanids were not shia. Only some rulers had a bit of shiism(exactly of sunni muslim historians of their time and age put it, notably Saif Aldawla, but this type shiism in them was amongst the 'favorist shia', meaning a group of shias who are mostly sunni, but think Ali is better than other companions notably Uthman, yet do not deny any other companions' righteousness or the validity of their Caliphate, and historically were still under the collective name of sunni muslims, with many sunni scholars being amongst them including Al-Hakem and others. Moreover, the Hamdanids didn't have any of the beliefs of other shia groups which would push them out of the sunni sphere of faith/belief so as to make them heretics in the eyes of sunni islam, as they didn't any of the beliefs considered heretical by sunni muslims, such as the worship of Ali and his progeny done by groups such as twelver shias, and didn't have the ideology/creed of cursing the companions which is also considered heretical. They were also loyal to the Sunni Abbasid caliph, hence the titles given to them. You can refer to muslim historians of their time to read about this more, including some who were slightly after them. AlDahabi, Ibn katheer, Ibn Aasaker, Ibn Al-Atheer. And ALLAH knows best.

was al Mutanabi shia or sunni ?
@ArabicVocalPoetry
@ArabicVocalPoetry 2 жыл бұрын
It's unclear at least to me, as scholars have different opinions regarding his beliefs.
@kay1057
@kay1057 Жыл бұрын
I am pretty sure he was never a Shia, the reason why people suspect he was a Shia because he liked Sayf Al Dawlah. But the reason he liked Sayf Al Dawlah was not religious it was racial, Al Mutanabi was a Arab supremacist, and Sayf Al Dawlah was the most prominent Arabic ruler of the time. But he is between Sunni or Kwaraij (But this might just be political and not aqeeda)
@C1yro_1
@C1yro_1 Жыл бұрын
@@kay1057 Half right, except that Al-Mutanabbi wasn't a supremacist, he just wanted a state to rule it and expand it to make the Khilafa return to Arabs, and he knows that the non-Arab wouldn't give him such a thing so he decided to go to Saif Al-Dawla and Bader bin Ammar But if we look closely, Fatik the roman was one of the closest people to Al-Mutanabbi, yet he didn't have that money nor political position to make Al-Mutanabbi life better, even so, Al-Mutanabbi loved him and considered him the best man to praise
@C1yro_1

Shia says he's Shi'i and Sunnis says he's Sunni, it isn't clear which was his belief, but he was clearly a muslim and one of the best people in general in his time
@kenkaneki9138
@kenkaneki9138 9 ай бұрын
@@C1yro_1 He was not one of the best people, this is a misunderstanding. We praise him for his poetry and excellence in Arabic not for his beliefs particularly. We also hold many pre-Islamic Arab poets in high regard when it comes to Arabic even tho we know these people were upon misguidance. People who have reached such level of knowledge of Arabic grammar, eloquence and poetry are praiseworthy in that sense because Arabic is truly a magnificent language.
