The Swiss Family Robinson [free Full Audiobook listen online] by Johann David Wyss
Topics librivox, swiss family robinson, wyss, audiobook, literature
Read by Mark F. Smith.
The Swiss Family Robinson has delighted generations of readers with its exciting tale of a family which, though shipwrecked, displays “the right stuff” and builds a charming colony that later, they do not want to leave. Cut off from the comforts and companionship of other humans, they use a familiarity with natural history and biology to find the resources and build the tools to construct a canoe, weave cloth, irrigate a garden, and turn an immense hollow tree into a lofty house with a spiral staircase. They domesticate buffaloes, wild asses, and monkeys. They establish farms and plantations. And finally, they have a terrifying encounter with natives from a nearby island.
Johann David Wyss, the author, did not live to complete his tale. Storytellers over the years have injected so many episodes into the various versions that probably none closely match the original. (Indeed, the Baroness de Montholieu expanded the book from two volumes into five when she translated it into French.) This effort was re-translated into English in 1849 by W.H.G. Kingston, abridging the edition severely. It follows the British sensibilities of the period in terms of sentence structure and emphasis.

I am 70 yrs young..Lovin this read numerous times since the days of my youth. Good fix for the pigeon English of present lit. This book is not multisyllabic and highbrow but full of good sense and good faith and a love for knowledge from our precious past..the golden thread of our ancestors preserved in script. Never bored with it.

The Disney movie seen as a child was and still is one of my favorites. It has made me want to be marooned on a tropical island with a plethora of supplies since a young age. Any time I’m on a boat in the Caribbean… oh no don’t wreck the boat on that little island with all of the gear we have packed.

Well I guess I'm still young cuz I'm only 74 but I love this adventure, it is truly captivating and very imaginative. I also love the narrator. I have heard other of his stories that he has done and he is just fabulous. I'm an insomniac from way back and need something to help me pass the hours until I finally fall asleep, this does the job very admirably!

He's good, I remember him from at least seventeen years ago narrating many books on the Librivox site. Greg Wagland is the most brilliant book narrator though, his KZbin channel is Magpie Audio and he does Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Shirlock Holms stories among other books. Check him out he's so good.

Look into Librovox, they are a free app with hundreds of books to listen to. Some are read entirely by one person, some by several readers as different characters, a few have different readers every chapter and some are actually studio presentations with sound tracks, actors and almost mental visuals! I enjoy their books at work with headphones on. Makes the day so much better than without a book. 🤗

Yes. Its awesome 👌. Especially at bedtime. Now if I could only get my wife to tuck me in😀 Anyone ever have a special blanket as a kid? Security blanket like Linus? Mine was called Big Green. It was an ugly ass green blanket on my bed and my mom or mostly my dad would read to me and tuck me in like a burrito. The little Red Hen, Little Engine that could, Scuppers the Sea Dog, or my favorite, Garfield. Yertle the Turtle by Dr Suess my dad did best.

There are actually multiple, VASTLY different English translations of the book. I was confused when I first listened to this version as well because the version I read as a child did not involve natives, or lightning strikes etc. So if you are thinking "wait - doesn't the donkey get eaten by a snake at some point" you aren't remembering the movie you are remembering a different translation of the book.

Very well written especially for an early 1800s book; Excellent pacing and characterization. Though it does show its age in all the obsessive religious dialogue and actions by the father, but thats just how people were back then. I was surprised just how good this old book is.

My understanding is that Swiss Family Robinson came from stories told to his children by a Swiss pastor. They were written down and published by one of his sons. I'm sure that Robinson Crusoe was a strong influence on the original stories.
