Arlo love the video Arlo! I think the numbers are a huge scream to ours and Nintendo’s faces. “HEY! These games are what our fans want! Let’s do more like this and improve!” I love BotW, and everything about it. Personally I would also have liked to seen some region variant enemies, like dodongos, digdoggers, gohmas, etc. but given what we got-that may be a thing soon! One thing I would like to bring up is that a lot of the Switch sales numbers may also have to do with it being so early still of the Switch's life. There's simply 'less' to play than there will be later on. Probably doesn't affect heavy hitters TOO terribly much, but its something to note. Especially with things like Twilight Princess vs. Skyward Sword. The former which was a launch title for Nintendo's then most successful system, so EVERYONE was getting it when they picked up their Wiis. Again, probably not a HUGE discrepancy but something to note I feel regardless.
@TheKabuto906 жыл бұрын
Skyward Sword also came out at the tail end of the Wii's lifespan AND a very large majority of the Wii's install base were (and I hate to say this) casuals buying the console and mostly party games for their families.

I would disagree with that argument, just look at ps3 and you. See that pretty much the top 5 of them came out in the back half of ps3's life (grand theft auto 5, the last of us, uncharted 3...) yes the quality of these game are decade defining, so you might have a point.

Arlo has actually mentioned that "honeymoon period" effect on early-in-system-life games before. It has caused some games that really don't deserve to be huge hits to be huge hits (no naming names, but we all have at least a few games we feel fall into that category). The ones that tend to suffer most are actually the ones that come out just before a system's "swan song" games, in the year when the successor system is announced. They're coming out right when everyone is suddenly going gaga for the upcoming hardware, but not quite before everyone remembers "oh yeah, current-gen systems still have good games, let's get back to those for a bit while we wait".

I really liked Skyward Sword and I know that's a minority opinion, but it was the first and only Zelda game where you could physically feel a connection to the character and game's events. It might be gimmicky but that final stretch of the game where you're fighting hordes of enemies and duelling, it was demanding and tiring and in a way, it felt like I could understand what Link has to go through, an exhausting battle to save the day. It was handholding and linear but it was the most cinematic and beautiful Zelda game too. That watercolour art style will last the way Wind Waker's cel shading did. I definitely thought it was a masterpiece and I have been playing Zelda games for over 20 years now. I think the current trend of gaming is something cynical, the way dark and gritty films or tongue in cheek superhero movies are popular now. It's what the audience wants but it doesn't make other games meritless.
@MrMoustache1446 жыл бұрын
Same the story is so beautiful and I wasn't the biggest fan of the art style when I first saw it because it was so different but it grew on me and it's one of my favorites along with ocarina and wind waker and breath of the wild
@christianalvarez99306 жыл бұрын
Everything on that game was perfect but one thing: the world. After the incredible and exciting world of wind waker where I could literally go where the wind blow, to the artificial world from skyward with load screens and a feeling of everything was desconected. Like going between "levels" instead of a real world.
@raymondthrone71976 жыл бұрын
Mostly these numbers remind me how ridiculous Pokemon's sales are in comparison to almost literally everything Nintendo produces. Ultra Sun & Moon have comparable sales to Breath of the Wild despite being essentially rereleases of a one-year old game _on the same system_ , with only a handful of improvements. Odyssey is still five million under even the poorest selling new series installments. It'll be interesting to see where Let's Go Pikachu & Eevee will fit into these charts, considering they're definitely looking to be the least ambitious and most "cash grabby" easily-produced fare Nintendo has planned for 2018.

Comparing the Wii's huge install base and the poor sales of Nintendo's games on it, and using that as a statement that, the games on switch is what people want, because the Switches install base is smaller, yet solgt more is misguided. There were a lot of casual gamers who only got it for Wii sports, and never bought another game again.
@Poefred6 жыл бұрын
True but this just shows that despite the huge success of the wii, it wasn't necessarily what the fans wanted. I'm sure a lot of people who own the switch have owned a wii. Nintendo is finally playing to their audience rather than trying to grab the attention of the casual market.
@lay-lowandsmash15196 жыл бұрын
It's not misguided. Its accurate. Hard truth math
@sajanpatel49566 жыл бұрын
No, it's not accurate. The wii's install base was a mostly casual and family market. Wii sports resort and other games like it, sold well because they could be played together, and because they were casual. Skyward Sword, and Mario Galaxy didn't sell as well because of this difference. The switch's demographic is much less family oriented, so more casual gamers and competitive ones make it's install base, instead of families.
@Poefred6 жыл бұрын
True but like I said, people who own the switch are pretty likely to have owned a wii right? I guess it's just speculation but just about any Nintendo fan had a Wii I'm sure. Maybe the switch audience is some crowd of people who didn't get the wii because they didn't like what it was offering, but especially at launch, I don't recall anything but insane hype.

What these numbers say to me is that the switch WILL hit 50mil units sold. This holiday season is going to be its biggest, because now all of the skeptics have been proven wrong and there’s so much value in the Switch and its titles. And if that’s true, all of these numbers will hit a huge upswing this quarter. I would also like to say, as a long time Splatoon player (and competitor) that this is really great news for us, although nearly 3/4 of those sales are Japan only, the success of the series is still growing and with more players comes more interest in the scene and more potential for the competitive player base to grow, which is what we need right now. With these numbers in mind, Splatoon becoming a big esports title is no longer out of the realm of possibility.

also I mean...im pretty sure most people liked Skyward sword...it's the only 3d zelda I haven't played yet but one of the main issues that people have with botw is with the whole 'effort' thing is the story...which is a huge part of Zelda...frm what I know Skyward Sword has great characters and a great story...but like I said...came out at the end of the Wii's lifespan
@thatdanjamesguy.3306 жыл бұрын
To my knowledge (haven't played the game yet) Skyward Sword had good and bad in every area. Innovation: Lots of small changes, but not much when compared to Breath of the Wild. Exploration: The overworld (on the ground) is big and has a lot to do, with a sweeping sky above it to explore ... but the sky is empty and under it are just linear pathways. Dungeons: Really good and clever dungeon design ... except your partner, Fi, gives away the solution before you can start to solve any of the puzzles, therefore rendering all that moot. Combat: Really neat, in-depth combat ... using motion controls at a time when people had begun to hate motion controls. The problems with the combat controls were intensified by this, and many despised it on principle. Art Style: Pretty good looking most of the time. But there were some ugly bits here and there where the hardware limitations shone through. Story: ... The story is great, but after everything else, it feels like the mandatory cutscenes are yet another obstacle preventing players from truly enjoying themselves in this grand new Zelda game, that should be so good by all accounts but isn't (to them). In conclusion, lots of good but also lots of bad about Skyward Sword. Breath of the Wild has lots of good and bad, but it's more segmented so the good parts can be amazing in their own right and outweigh the bad ones.
@Turo6026 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild had the benefit of being launch titles for brand new systems while also releasing on the previous console. Skyward Sword just came out in a time when the Wii was already in everyone's closets and nobody cared for the last great Wii game in 2011. Not to mention, Wii U was around the corner.

7:08 which is bad news for me. I feel in love with the series thanks to spirt tracks and Oot 3D. The former was one of the most linear Zelda games and both had a strong focus on puzzles, dungeons and story in comparison to exploration. So Breath of the Wild has very little of what got me into the series. So while Im happy for Nintendo's success Im disappointed it could be decades before we get another 3D Zelda that plays off of the stuff I like in the series.
@thatdanjamesguy.3306 жыл бұрын
Hopefully they'll add the stuff back and get the best from both worlds. If Zelda goes a long time without dungeons, puzzles and story people will notice, same as they did when exploration was neglected. I don't think it'll be decades, a decade at most, but if not at least Zelda-likes are starting to become a thing. (Ittle Dew, Oceanhorn, Tunic, etc.)

I guess thats true. But with so much freedom and abilty to do things how you want its impossible to have a deep story thats comprehensible. That's an advantage of linearity

+Kyle Campbell If they have certain story quests unlock after others, I think they can have a good story in every way but pacing. Pacing the story is going to be a challenge with non-linear games. Perhaps they should have the quests follow multiple subplots that ultimately converge? Then the player has freedom in how to progress while still keeping things moving forward.

There's great things about the story, but I feel like it's pretty weak here too. You can go multiple dungeons with almost nothing at all happening related to the story. In past zelda games every dungeon had something to do with the story or world building but skyward sword it felt like you just got the thing, went to the next dungeon, got another thing, repeat over and over again. When the story actually does do...anything at all, it's great stuff but it's easily the weakest 3D zelda story.

If you were to look at the Top 5 best selling games on the Switch from Nintendo (removing 1-2-Switch 'cause of the Launch Drought) it seems to show which genres will sell better on the platform: * Fast/snappy/arcade-like controls. * Puzzle-solving, exploration, and platforming. * Games that are easy to play, but hard to master. * 3D Action-Adventure games with large areas to explore. * Some kind of multiplayer feature is present (online, local, co-op, social). * Colorful games w/a primary unique mechanic that is deep and present throughout the adventure. It's an oversimplification based on the best selling Nintendo titles, it doesn't take into account Nintendo Switch being the Indie/RPG machine, but I think it works as a poor-man's guide to predicting future Nintendo titles.

- raises hand - I'm one of those that bought BoTW for WiiU. I did so because because I wanted to play Breath of The Wild(full stop) more than I wanted to play Breath of The Wild /on the Switch/, and it didnt look like I was going to get my hands on a Switch any time soon. I also bought MK8 Deluxe and Pokken Tournament DX for Switch despite having the originals. Mostly because I wanted the additional content. ESPECIALLY a proper Battle Mode for Mario Kart. I haven't bought Tropical Freeze for Switch because I own it for WiiU, the new content isn't a big enough draw, and I haven't even gotten around to beating it in the first place yet. One game I would GLEEFULLY rebuy if they ported it is Xenoblade Chronicles X. Hopefully with additional content and maybe some slight improvements to graphics or at least pop-in, but not required. Why? Because XBCX is one of my favorite games ever, and because I was a latecomer and didn't even have proper internet when I DID buy it, I missed out on most of the Online content. Which, since it would be a brand new game to millions, I would get a second chance to really enjoy.

Asking around will show that a lot of people actually still hold Galaxy in higher regard than Odessey, as much as they genuinely do like the latter. Personally, even, I’d rather see a Galaxy 3 before an Odessey 2.

I like Galaxy games better than Odyssey because Odyssey has kinda uninspired level design. Grass, sand, water, forest, cloud, ice, beach, food, etc. which sure Galaxy has some of that too like Starshine Beach, Freezeflame, etc. but even then they did something to keep things fresh, especially in Galaxy 2 with the insane amount of level variety with masterful design and loads of powerups. Now I love New Donk City and Bubblaine and everything, but it all has a hint of "been there, done that" that Galaxy games spit on, generally. Note: Odyssey and the Galaxy's are S-level games in my book, I'm just saying Galaxy's are more inspired.
@RVBMichaelJCaboose6 жыл бұрын
@@megaultrasonic i mean granted yeah the design of galaxy stages are nice, but i feel that in terms of execution, it didn't take too long for galaxy to re-hash the same level twice. odyssey is more of like an extension of the same task in which you go around to collect the power moons, similar to how banjo-kazooie is. i will complain that in regards to the nimbus and ruined kingdom, they missed a golden opportunity to make those full-fledged kingdoms instead of just throwaway levels for big boss fights

These sales numbers speak to me that experimentation with good marketing and a huge fun factor do REALLY well. Splatoon's a new IP, but both in the Wii U days and at present it was advertised the HECK out of, and now it's such a huge seller. Odyssey and BOTW were formulaic departures for their series, but they had so much care put into them that they turned out to be masterpieces. Granted, ARMs was marketed a ton and didn't do AS well- and admittedly, I gave it a month and dropped it myself- but even that sold reasonably well. Gamers like it when you change things up in GOOD and exciting ways: just make it more like your top sellers and less like Sticker Star and your fanbase will thank you for it :)

Totally, the Xenoblade series has also seen increasingly better sales, and increasingly better marketing (to be fair, they could only go up after the first one) Tough the games themselves obviously also play a factor, Arms was a bit too bizzare for me and i couldnt really get into it, while Splatoon was second nature to anyone who has ever played a shooter even with the drastically different mechanics. I really enjoyed Breath of the Wild, just because it looked so good and there was so much to do. The worst part was that I didn't get much done in my real life for a few weeks because of that game. I would sit down to play it and think, "I'll just unlock a tower and then quit." But on the way, I'd find a shrine, and then something I needed for a sidequest and the next thing I knew several hours had passed. It was fun. But I also get why some Zelda fans don't like it. A good number of the shrines were very small and relatively simple. There were only four dungeons and while interesting, they weren't really all that big. I mean, it makes sense because the focus was on the overworld, but that made it different from what people expected. And yes, there were puzzles in the overworld as well (especially if you tried to find all 300 seeds, in which case you are insane) but it just didn't feel the same. I wish there was some way in future games to keep the breadth of BotW and yet keep more of the traditional Zelda formula. Or, alternatively, do a separate Zelda game, more in the gameplay and graphic style of Link Between Worlds.

Mario Odyssey... It's fantastic, but it's missing something that Mario 64 had. Not totally sure what it is, maybe it's just nostalgia. I think it might be that it doesn't have enough "Mario"-ness. Kind of the same problem I had with Mario Sunshine. One of the things I loved about 64 was the modern take on classic Mario ideas, like the ghost house, ice level, etc. Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing Odyssey, I'm just saying, for my taste, it didn't bring enough of its roots to the party.
@Poefred6 жыл бұрын
I think both odyssey and breath of the wild are missing the aesthetic of their franchise pretty hard. It's a fine balance between being brand new, and also feeling like a game in the same series, but it has been done before. That said, in sunshine and odyssey's defense, they both took place outside of the mushroom kingdom, mario had went somewhere totally new. But even in sunshine's case I think it still felt like part of the mario universe. The new NPC's and music felt like mario. Even having a haunted hotel. Odyssey on the other hand not as much. And actually I'd be totally fine with being so disconnected from the old tropes if it brought more new to the table. But odyssey's level themes are definitely my biggest problem with it. The most interesting level themes are the ones that get nothing but a small level or a boss fight. Cap kingdom, cascade kingdom, and especially ruined kingdom would be great if they were expanded into something bigger. But the levels they did make huge were things like Sand kingdom or seaside kingdom. Then there's a lot of kingdoms that feel more like filler, like snow or lake kingdom for example. I love odyssey but I hope in the future there will be more levels like wooded, metro, and luncheon.
@jackgarcia59266 жыл бұрын
I think it was the tight level design. Odyssey is much more lenient and "play at your own pace" because it was made with the Switch in mind, basically, it was made for portable play, so you could get a few moons without much hassle before suspending it without issue. And as such, Odyssey focuses on flexible design, rather than tight design. And while giving the player the tools to play the same game in so many different ways is an amazing design feat...it just doesnt lend itself for tight level design which is what gives me thrills when playing platformers. It makes up for it with those areas that are just platforming challenges, but much like the trials in Botw, while i found them enjoyable, they just didnt quite scratch the same itch as they did in previous titles. Thats the root of it for me, the game is a tad too lenient. While constantly getting Moons at an insane pace is def fun, i just prefer to have a little difficulty and frustration to make the pay off all that much sweeter, and even the extra challenges were a bit on the easy side of things. Like all things, there should be a balance, it doesnt ever feel like i had to put any effort into finding moons and i just dont feel the same amount of satisfaction, and in say, Sunshine, certain worlds were just a bit too frustrating for their own good (especially those fucking Lilly pads i swear to god). It is a bit odd, since Mario usually dances on that line pretty well. Super Mario World, Galaxy and to a lesser extent 3D world all did it quite well and even insanely hard extra worlds like Tubular or Champions road never felt too punishing.

This video definitely needed more focus as it came to the end. It began with focusing on how games with ambition are affecting the switch, but stayed on skyward sword bashing a bit longer than necessary

What is up with arlo forcing this narrative that everyone hates linear games lol

All statistic interpretations are to some degree biased, since they never tell all of a story. I noticed it too, and I think the bigger takeaway is that everyone likes games with lots of effort put into them (with BotW and SMO's scope implying more effort had to be put in).

Yeah it's pretty clear he's a bit biased. This comes across as just confirmation bias for him because he likes the games the newer ones are inspired by. I don't think sales numbers really say which games are better. Also I'm pretty sure a lot of people have said that the Switch is their first Nintendo console since Gamecube or 64 so they would've missed out on the Wii/U games.

He never said that. He's pointing out sales numbers and using his own intuition and opinions to explain them.

NintenSnow Plays! Yes, but he’s leaving out some key details. The biggest one is NSMB fatigue, which is the biggest contributor to Odyssey’s success, not so much the return to 3D open worlds.

@@psychokinrazalon I don't think he ever said the 3d formula was to blame. He's made it white clear that the lack of creativity (that yes, most people got sick of because of NSMB) was the main issue.
