As a Syrian that has been outside Syria for almost 7 years now, this video was an emotional Rollercoaster. My grandfather owns a bookshop in old Damascus since the 1940s, the one that you were standing in front of it as Simon met his fan 10:55 , you can even see my name on it since me and my grandfather have the same name 😁.. and for a moment I remembered when I was a kid, the amount of tourists that came every day to get guides and maps. It's very sad that no tourist would consider Syria for a vacation anymore. Great video Benjamin, thanks a lot for showing the real beauty of this country. It was very heartwarming and for 50 minutes it felt like being back home.

Syria in 2022 is quite safe in the 90% of the country where Assad has held or reasserted government rule. The Western sanctions are what are still making life for regular people very difficult, in addition to the Western-backed jihadists and rebels still active in certain parts of the country. That’s why the mainstream media isn’t showing us this reality on the ground-it goes against the narrative the West has been striving to create in this wonderful country. Oh, and what nation has actually come to the help of Syria, upholding its democratically-elected government, supporting its struggling economy, defending its indigenous Christian minorities against ISIS and other radical Islamic extremists backed by the West? Surprise, surprise-it’s Russia. No wonder the West doesn’t care for the truth when it comes to Syria (or at least does it’s best to make sure _you_ don’t know the truth).

Used to be videos like this on you tube. Showing the people of Damascus following Assad while he was shopping. Don't be fooled. He is loved there as the best option. In U.S. Every mention of Assad is accompanied w/ Brutal Dictator, or something like that. He makes fools out of western reporters trying to get a juicy story cuz he very reasoned and well spoken.

As an old subscriber since the Kolya era , I have to admit that it's surreal watching you wandering in aleppo streets. The city I haven't been able to return to 11 years ago. It was absolute heartwarming. to be quite honest, the last time I got that excited to watch a video and have someone takes on syria was when Topgear filmed their episode in Syria 2009. Much respect to the mighty efforts you put on.

I hitch-hiked across Syria in 1999, when I was a student, on an overland trek from Alexandria to Istanbul. I visited Damascus, Homs, Hama, Aleppo, Latakia etc. Interesting country. Great food. The friendliest of all the Arab countries I've visited (although I did have to reassure everyone that I was not an Israeli!).

did you have money ?
@eliasblum7532 жыл бұрын
@@Original-Phantom Enough. If I remember correctly, I had a budget of about 1500 British pounds (in 1999 money) for the whole trip (30 days, so about 50 GBP a day). I was a student back-packer, travelling light, staying in mostly hostels, travelling by hitch-hiking or bus, eating mostly at local restaurants, so that was enough. Every few days I would splurge on a big meal at a more upmarket restaurant. Plus I had access to about another 1500 on a credit card for emergencies if I'd needed it (which I didn't).

@@eliasblum753 i think you could still spend a few very nice weeks in Syria for the same amount of money as back then (1500 pounds or about 1750€).
@Andy-P2 жыл бұрын
@@eliasblum753 I spent two months there in 1997. I reckon I could of survived on $1 day - just with out travel. I spend about $10 a day for everything. They much preferred US dollars when changing money. I went up market a couple of times. I reckoned the difference between the street food and up-market restaurant was just the price. Had to go to plush hotels to drink decent beer - and use a proper toilet. No asked if I was an isreali. Did ask where I was from. Happy to tell them. They were happy to see a foreigner on holiday in Syria.

24:15 this is the hotel we used to eat and stay in when we visited Maaloula back in the 80s and early 90s... It was heartbreaking seeing it reduced to rubble... I’ve never thought I’d see a KZbinr visiting my country after the decade of war that we been through😅, but truly thank you for showcasing the bright side of our country. Despite all the hardships that we face and the economic crisis, the culture and people never change and hope to see more KZbinrs and tourists visiting and exploring.
