🇦🇫 What do you think of when you hear the word 'Afghanistan'? Probably not very good things and that isn't surprising. Afghanistan seems to have been in a perpetual state of war since recorded history began. But with the new government in place and the country supposedly somewhat safer now than at any time in the last 20 years I decided to go and investigate the mysterious landlocked country for myself to see how life was progressing. It was quite the adventure. Welcome to Taliban Land...
Please check out Backpacker Ben's KZbin channel for his Afghan videos.

I can't tell you how happy I am to see Bald continue to upload! I know he get this a lot, I see it all the time in his KZbin and Instagram comments, but he truly is such an incredible KZbinr and journalist. He was my go-to source for fun Russian adventures, and knowledge when I first got obsessed with Chernobyl and the Soviet Union. He brought us through India, which is what sparked my curiosity into other travel and other cultural channels. I've always loved the idea of traveling, specifically to Ireland and/or England, but cannot due to being physically handicap. Ben has allowed me to see parts of the world I've always wanted too, but in a very real and authentic way. He's not a "travel/journalist" channel, he's just a very nice and charismatic guy, who travels around, experiencing the world for what it really is. It's the USSR not Russia, the ruling Afghanistan communist party govt. had sought the help of USSR to counter the religious parties and groups who want Afghanistan to turn into Sharia law driven Islamic country. West,USA and Pakistan along with the Saudis had started to support the Muslim religious fanatic figures and established them as Mujahideen i.e. religious warriors fighting against non believers. Foreign resistant groups like Laden's Al Qaeda joined them during the 1980s. After the Soviet departure one of a strong ultra religious group out of these Islamic Mujahideen had turned into Taliban and waged war against westranisation as it wants Sharia based society. Progressive and modern elements of Afghan society were killed by US & westerns themselves under the guise of supporting freedom fighters fighting against invaders.

Just watched your episode on Afghanistan. Brought back happy memories for me. Went there in the early seventies. Visited the giant Buddhas of Bamiyan when they were still standing proud. Climbed to the top of one of them. Terrible to see their destruction. Stayed in a small village nearby. Visited also the lake where you went. There was nothing there then. We were told it was called the Blue lake. Great Times when I was young. I'm 80 now but I'll never forget my trip on the hippy trail to India and Nepal. Thanks for bringing back good memories for me.

As an afghan, i can only imagine how difficult it must have been to be side by side with the t ban. I also love the message you said at the end, hoping that afghans finally find some peace and resolve their issues by themselves without foreign interference.

I'm sorry that the powers that be fucked with your country's future for over 30 years. Being of Mexican heritage, the U.S. has had it's hand in Mexico's and Latin America's affairs for nearly 200 years. I love my country, but we need to realize not everyone has our ideas, and that we don't need to "save" other countries. We usually do more harm than good... But there is no denying freedom and personal opinions and rights are the way of the future. We don't have do do anything to set this into action. With the rise of the net and technology, it will become reality.

I have a friend that trekked through Afghanistan in the early '60's. One night they stayed in a small village and ontinued down the trail the next morning. They were quite alarmed to see a good number of the villagers following them, chattering excitedly. They feared that the villagers were waiting to get out of sight on the village and would then kill and rob them. They cam around a bend and were confronted with a rope bridge strung out across a deep canyon. The villager crowded around them and they noticed money being flashed and changing hands. They cam to realize the villagers were betting on whether they could cross the bridge without falling off to their death. He and his friend made it across and lived to tell the story.
