This was great but it's kind of disappointing how often these San Joaquin Valley labor battles of the 1930's get red-washed in contemporary retellings Say it proud: Pat Chambers was a communist, as was Caroline Decker. Fresno County had the largest Communist Party west of New York at the time, because traditional labor unions were (and still are) largely uninterested in organizing farm labor If anyone is looking for a good source on the era that doesn't avoid the c-word, I recommend Right Out of California by UC Davis historian Kathryn Olmsted. She makes the case that the core of the modern conservative movement and its tactic of distracting workers with culture wars can be traced all the way back to the types of campaigns local growers had developed against people like Chambers in response to the success of their socialist program of rank-and-file style organizing
