Within the reserve of Vallombrosa (FI), 1200 hectares of area, particle "Mandria" where the Douglas firs were planted. They have North American origin, with rapid growth, especially in conditions of soil fertility, high humidity and not excessive brightness.
Under these conditions the plants reached high heights. Vallombrosa is the seat of European silviculture, that is where forestry began: the monks made cuts at the ground level, with artificial postponed renewal, while in this part of the reserve there is a naturalistic forestry, that is the natural course of the forest, as we can see from the beech seedling, the forest is naturally renewing itself.
Before measuring these splendid douglasias, we thought a lot about what was the best method to have more precision and practicality, so we used metric steel tape, with a very low error coefficient due to elongation. The ribbon has been hoisted using a plumbed rope before and, with the help of colleagues dislocated on the length of the plant, through a pole and a set square, it has been hoisted on the tip to measure the total height of the plant.
After, with the help of the colleagues, we took the measures of the girths of the trees, every two meters.
