Still astonished that "Psychopomp" is still unrequested. Pretty much my favourite Tea Party song. It's from the Transmission album, the same one as Army Antz.

The Tea Party’s sound has evolved over time quite significantly. Their thing from the beginning was the eastern influences they injected into their music. (Jeff talks about Ravi Shankar and, as a kid, tuning his guitar to sound like a sitar, which is how he developed all his alternate guitar tunings to mimic exotic instruments.) As they progressed and got more successful, they added more instruments and recording techniques, as bands often do. After the album Edges of Twilight (where this track is from, and probably their quintessential album with many fan favourites) they entered an era where they incorporated a harder, darker, electronic and industrial inspired sound to their music, and then shifting again to a more restrained and melodic sound, which is arguably where they found the most success with hits like Temptation and later Heaven Coming Down. And then eventually tried going more mainstream with the album Seven Circles, which had a more optimistic tone, and was a fairly stark departure. This is when they started sounding more like typical alt rock, and they lost some of their fans from before. Jeff didn’t agree with the new direction and so the band disbanded in 2005. They got back together in 2011 with Ocean at the End released in 2014, which again sounded quite different from their previous work. The thing about the Tea Party is that their distinctive sound and yet diverse range means that you can love one song or album and pass on the rest.

First time I've heard this band. I don't know anything about them or what has been said about them but I liked it. It had much more to it I just was taken back by how it pulled at my heart strings I heard a voice that reminds me of Chris Cornell when he would just sit and sing and play an acoustic. I am going to check out the other song you mentioned and more of their music. Thanks for the reaction .. oh I wanted to mention I really liked the drum and cymbal work during the cool solo. (I'm listening thru my pitiful tv lol so I don't think how accurate the sound is lol)

The Tea Party are a Canadian band from Toronto. They have a middle eastern feel to a lot of their music and use some very unusual instruments. Cheers 🇨🇦

Love this album. Deep and robust, with a most charming depth.

I think Jeff's dad insistence on never allowing him to listen to 70 bands and just got him to play blues and jazz really helped the band understand how to get that 70s sound by knowing their early blues influences. I like acoustic and electric songs because they bring a lot of loudness and pronouncement to the electric with an easy trick but this just makes me more impressed when bands like the warning and nightwish do the same thing within the electric space since it's a lot harder to with less natural diversity (gojira too). It was very common to have acoustic and electric parts following each other in the 90s sort of getting that aqualung or stairway to heaven structure vibe which I can believe are worthy to inspire 90s rockers. I believe Jeff martin had developed a finger nails for finger style (at least his thumb on his strumming hand). I think a lot of the nice blends and mixes are in this album and fans give it as their best is because it's their only album they had fully made with a producer along side Martin. The extra help and experience gave them more creative opportunities so they were grateful and careful in their writings and recordings.

Cheers David.. I had a feeling you’d like the structure of this one! I felt the album version was a better one to get that build up feeling from as they tend to just play it on electric only when playing live (unless it’s just Jeff doing solo acoustic stuff when he often just plays it all on a 12-string). You might also like Walk With Me which was the last track on the same album, coming just after this one. Again, album track is best for hearing all the subtleties, kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5K5eIF5nNp2fZI. This one builds up very nicely! It was a good score. Personally I rate it a bit higher as I love the guitar part and it took me a hell of a long time to work out the tuning and how to play it back in the days before KZbin! 🤣

Aw man... one thing that really is a pet peeve of mine (and this may just be me) is when people put the score in their comments, kinda ruins the experience for those that read them before/during the video.
