A lot of these component failures appear to be the result of their practice of buying small (1.5 to 2.5 tonne ) trucks and extending them to carry bigger loads than the components were designed for . That,and the quality of the Chinese built trucks such as great walls etc.

We also have a Honing Machine , 2 lathes and 1 bridgeport which makes the most mess. I mean do you know easy it is to get a Machine that cost 500k? It’s not easy at all. So we maintained it👍

When welding in the lathe, I hope you put the grounding clamp directly on the part you are welding and not on any stationary part of the lathe. Current passing through the spindle bearings is a quick way to damage them.
@therealspixycat
@therealspixycat 2 жыл бұрын
Indeed: use a flat car battery ground cable in an o shape and connect this way the ground. Or temporary weld a small shaft with a brass baring that hold the gound. You will also notice that welding is a bit easier because of the consistent ground
@BobSmith-mc7uq

You KNOW they don't do that. Ground to the bed or ways.
@johnghatti5435
@johnghatti5435 2 жыл бұрын
How does welding the way you mention damage the bearings in the spindle? Not sure how an electrical field would do that. It wouldn’t heat the bearings by welding that way but I’d be more worried about the electrical part of the lathe.
@therealspixycat
@therealspixycat 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnghatti5435 there are multiple greased (read electric insulated) small contacts points between the the two casings and the bearing balls while the current is large: the grease will melt and the balls will fuse damaging the bearing itself due to the high current on multiple places. The bearing was never designed to be a high current rotating conductor. Plus welding is sometimes sub optimal because of the bad ground.
@georgegonzalez2476
@georgegonzalez2476 2 жыл бұрын
That's only true if you have been oiling or greasing the bearings. If they are dry, then current has an easier path through and doesn't spark over so much.

@@richardtemby4358 Now you are showing your ignorance by rubbishing Keith Whittaker and phasing. There is and will be a minimum of two joints Phasing is critical in balancing the shaft and expecting it not to vibrate. True welding the spline on the piss is very bad but and will have serious detrimental out come but careful alignment, phasing and dynamically balancing is absolutely required for smooth trouble free operation.

Yeah, when a tube etc. is sealed air-tight like this one was, what happens is, it gets some surface rust like that from the trapped air when it's closed up and welded initially, but it stops rusting because all the oxygen has reacted with the iron, and all that is left is mainly inert nitrogen so rust ceases at that point. Removing all of the rust would actually cause the rust process to start over again. This is why a sealed piece of steel tube will rust from the outside to the inside. I was hoping they'd clean the tines on the shaft itself, but maybe they did that later before installation.
