When I learned Jimi's "3rd Stone from the sun" and combined it with Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive" - I realised that Syd had ripped off "Steptoe and Son" and Jimi had rewrote "Coronation Street" TV theme tune. Freak Out!

Led Zeppelin's debut. We went from zero Led Zeppelin to max Led Zeppelin in an instant. Honorable mentions to Hendrix, Van Halen, Pretenders, Boston, U2, Elvis Costello, King Crimson, Black Sabbath, Lyrnyrd Skynyrd, the Police, the Doors, and the Cars. Thanks, Barry.

Blue Öyster Cult's first isn't as well-known, it seems, as some of the others on your list, but it's definitely an exceptional debut album. One thing that's great about it is that it didn't set trends because the lyrics were so weird on most of the songs that it instead defined the uniqueness of the band for a while. The songwriting and multiple-guitar arrangements are just some of the rewards of repeated listenings.

Re BOC I think Buck Dharma was heavily influenced by the sound of Robby Krieger and yes certainly a great album. i never get tired of listening to them.

My thoughts on my list (I hope someone is interested): Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells (1973). A young guy that wasn't very well known and socially awkward somehow makes an album almost by himself that broke rules, became a soundtrack for a classic movie and become (sort of) the foundation for a huge record company. That's something. The story is interesting but the music stands on it's own. He has done plenty albums after it. Many of them strong but this is the masterpiece in many peoples minds. Wishbone Ash - Wishbone Ash (1970). A band that still puts out music. They never really reached a really big audience but big enough to continue with more albums than most. If you are a nerd of guitar this album might be for you. Van Halen - Van Halen (1978). Not many guitarists have had more copycats than Eddie Van Halen but it's not all about that. Everyone performs strong here, the production is fantastic and while being a albums for guitarists it's also a great partyalbum for the casual rock fan. Blue Öyster Cult - Blue Öyster Cult (1972). Like Wishbone Ash this album is not a bonfide classic but it is very enjoyable and original. Most people think the band gradually got better and maybe so but there is a certain style to this debut that stands on it's own. The Doors - The Doors (1967). A real classic. Most big bands of the time was english.. The Beatles, The Kinks, The Who, Cream, The Rolling Stones but The Doors was american and their debut could, to me, compare to any of it's contemporaries. If not their best album - Certainly a very strong start. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath (1970). Another classic. Wishbone Ash and Blue Öyster Cult has reached their fair share of success but Black Sabbath has become the kings of heavy metal. Like Blue Öyster Cult many think the band got even better but this is being considered as the start of a massive genre and that's quite something. Budgie - Budgie (1971). The albumcover is pink with some weird bird on a horse. What to think? Don't think - Listen. Budgie is like a musical cousin to Blue Öyster Cult or Black Sabbath. To me they have a seriously underrated rhythm section and the heavy riffs are certainly there. R.E.M. - Murmur (1983). R.E.M. has plenty of famous songs but early R.E.M. was something else. If you think Everybody Hurts, Losing My Religion or Daysleeper is speaking for their whole catalog, you are wrong. I think many people who knows several hits have no clue this album or the one's that followed even exists. Sort of a shame. I can appreciate much from R.E.M. over the years and if you never "got them". This might do the trick. Steely Dan - Can't Buy A Thrill (1972). I know music-nerds know about Steely Dan but they are not a band the causal listener knows much about. Listening to them.. I don't understand why. While being complicated music in a way it's very catchy and easy listening. Both Pop and Rock fans should be able to like this album very easily. The Band - Music From Big Pink (1968): These guys was mostly famous for being on some of Bob Dylans most beloved records (to this day!) and wanted to bransch out on their own. Eric Clapton talks more about this band than his own music and they are a bit of a rarity musically. Cream, Hendrix Experience, The Doors, The Beatles and soon Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath along with many others was toward a certain direction musically. These guys weren't. They took a left path and made some damn good music on the way. It's not really Bob Dylan nor say Hendrix but like a missing piece of the puzzle. I didn't get them at first but with time I really liked it and this album is one of the best.

Absolutely agree 100%. The Cars could have stopped at that album and said "you know what, this is as good as it gets, that'll do us". But would never have been privileged to hear the sublime" Touch and Go " from" Panorama " If there was a weak song on the debut, for me it is" I'm in touch with your world ". " Moving in Stereo "and" All Mixed Up "should always be listened to together.

I was home from college and walked into a record store at Syracuse University. They just happened to be playing In the Court of the Crimson King when I walked in. I bought the record without any second thoughts. Probably the most important and wonderful impulse buy of my life. Still ranks as one of my favorite all time albums and is consistently in my rotation. In fact I think I'll play it right now.

A brilliant review. Thank you for including “Are You Experienced”, “In The Court Of The Crimson King” and “The Doors”. I would have included the first Emerson Lake And Palmer album. You are absolutely spot on regarding “In The Court Of The Crimson King”. I’m old enough and fortunate enough to have seen King Crimson, Jimi Hendrix and The Doors live in the late 60s. Those performances were stunning and revelatory. I was never the same. Bravo!

1. Mountain - Climbing Incredibly talentend and overlooked songwriter in Felix Pappalardi - a forgotten genious, but in the late 60:ies and early 70:ies he was everywhere. Mountain is so much more than their signature track "Mississippi Queen" - just listen to "Nantucket sleighride" (not on this album though) 2. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin I This had a huge impact on me when I listened to it the first time, and I don't think I have listened to an album more times, and I never get tired of i - never ever! 3. Joy Division - Unknown pleasures Our common denominator 4. Pretenders -Pretenders Awesome guitar rock - RIP James & Pete 5. Three man army - A third of a lifetime 6. Sir Lord Baltimore - Kingdome come Only released two albums but both monumental 7. Dust - Dust Overlooked talented band with great hard rock album 8. Pink Floyd - Piper at the gates of dawn Different issues in US & UK. The US issue has "See Emily Play" on it but there are more tracks on the UK issue. I have original issues of both though - lucky meee!!! 9. Judas Priest - Rocka Rolla Monumental -the best they ever did 10. UFO - UFO I Listen to the cover of Eddie Cochran's "C'mon Everybody" and Price Kajuku, the energy and hunger of Phil Mogg has never been seen since Some bonus albums: 11. Humble Pie - As safe as yesterday is Too much talent to be ignored 12.Queen -Queen I Unfortunately it went downhill from there but the next two albums are good too, then they became too theatrical for my liking 13 Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath 14. The Stooges - The Stooges Well, er, another common denominator 15. MC5 - Back in the USA Their first studio album

10. Kate Bush- The Kick Inside. Beautiful songs and voice with thoughtful lyrics. The beginning of a great 5 album run. 9. Devo- Are We not Men: We are Devo. Very unique, creative and fun to listen to. Fantastic production by Eno. 8. Boston- Boston. Clear, clean, powerful, sonic rock n roll. Several classic songs. Every song is very good to great. 7. Jimi Hendrix- Are you Experienced? Ground breaking instrumentation, especially guitar of course. Classic songs. Extremely influential. 6. King Crimson- In the Court of the Crimson King. 21st century schizoid man may be the best first song by any band. Progressive genius. 5. Led Zeppelin- Led Zeppelin (1). Great hard rock with psychedelic edge. A new sound that led to the legendary career. Also very influential. 4. Pink Floyd- Piper at the Gates of Dawn. True psychedelic cleverness with Syd Barrett when he was still in his head enough to create great music. 3. The Doors- The Doors. Must listen for anyone who enjoys music. It's about freedom, life experience, darkness and drugs and so much more. 2. Eno- Here Comes the Warm Jets. As creative as an album can get in every aspect and one of the best guitar solos ever by Robert Fripp on Baby's on Fire. Extremely influential. 1. The Cars- The Cars. I've literally have heard every song on Pandora rotations. Can't say that about any other album All the songs are great.

Martin Hannet truly was the George Martin of Joy Division. It's in it's own universe. I'm glad you added Leonard Cohen as well. 'Stories Of The Street' is my favorite Leonard Cohen song. Joy Division/New Order are my favorites but for debut albums I have to pick The Stone Roses.

I love the way you articulate your thoughts on the music that ignites your soul...and happily tapped “subscribe”. Sitting in a pub with you, enjoying several pints, and chatting away into the wee small hours about music would be time very well spent, I’m sure! Anyways, great list! Like others have mentioned, I was surprised you didn’t include Zeppelin 1, but that’s neither here nor there - it is, after all, YOUR list...! One addition I might make, perhaps an honourable mention if not a replacement of one already included, would be Jeff Buckley’s “Grace”, which regularly gets played front to back in my home. I think part of what makes his videos so great is his knack for striking just the right balance between the obvious and the unexpected. To achieve this, seemingly obvious picks must sometimes be omitted. Besides, if I remember right, he didn't rank Led I all that high in the band's discography. My personal ranking of Led Zeppelin albums has I and II alternating in the top spot...

I usually don't comment on things but this resonated with me. Having mostly seen your videos with a prog rock perspective, I was expecting a lot of Genesis/Floyd/etc in here but I have to say that there is a wonderful diversity in your choices. I can't argue with 8 of your selections - maybe not top 10 but all extremely good - and the other two are the Zappa and Presley albums which I don't know so I can't judge. Thank you for that - it helps me believe that I can trust the things that you recommend. Interesting that John Cale is involved in 3 of the albums and also another that I would consider - The Modern Lovers first album

Leonard Cohen is a great choice, it would be on my list if I made one, I'm not a good list maker when it comes to the best of or most favorite. So much excellent music to choose from but I enjoy your lists as well as your reasons and thoughts on them.

A nicely argued list. Of course, I disagree with about half of it but isn't that the point? For example, the best rock album ever made and therefore the best debut is the Modern Lovers album. Or so I've thought for more than forty years. Much of it was also produced by John Cale. Other great debuts, in no particular order, include Pink Flag by Wire, Entertainment by the Gang of Four, Talking Heads 77, and--the baby of the bunch--T H E by Tricot.

Hi Barry! My favourite era for quality rock music is the 70's so I've chosen my favourites from this decade. Difficult to put them in any order but my number one is: Television - Marquee Moon. Others that I consider classics are: Steely Dan - Can't Buy A Thrill , Santana - Santana , Dire Straits - Dire Straits , Montrose - Montrose , The Stranglers - Rattus Norvegicus , Kate Bush - The Kick Inside , Boston - Boston , Rush - Rush and the debut album from my favourite band: Blue Oyster cult - Blue Oyster Cult.

Just by coincidence (?) three albums on your list involve John Cale (Horses, Stooges, VU) who also produced another remarkable debut for Jonathan Richman - The Modern Lovers, which is also a classic (recorded in 1972 but released in 1976, Pablo Picasso and Roadrunner alone are worth to have this album).

Smith and her band did not get in with Cale in the slightest. They rejected every suggestion he made. Eventually, Cale asked Smith why she hired him as producer. I appreciate your opinion, but you left out a couple of great ones. Led Zeppelin 1 should be on anyones list. Imagine buying that album, taking it home, putting it on the turntable and Good Times Bad Times comes on! Pearl Jams Ten is a masterpiece. Lastly, The Cars debut album had the most hits for any debut album. Keep up the good work.

Pearl Jams Ten is great album and a solid choice for top ten debut album list. But Led Zeppelin debut, to my opinion, is not. As much as I love them, Led Zeppelin at the time were just another incarnation of the Yardbirds. Half of the songs on the album were played by the Yardbirds, the other half lifted from other blues artists. It is a great sounding album but I wouldn't include it in my top ten list.

A sadly but understandably overlooked debut album was Moby Grape. The 12 songs were all released as A/B sides on singles and at the time comments were this album pulled it off. They followed the with a set at Monterey topped only by Otis Redding (the prior year I think). Then the wheels came off as the follow up album was not as strong. And then the "we had a manager that" happened and they were not allowed to perform under their name or even play their music live. So a great rock album was pretty much forgotten. Do give it a listen.

Nice idea and great choices. The debut albums from Patti Smith, Jimmy Hendrix.King Crimson, Velvet Underground.The Doors are also among the best ever written. I would add also the fantastic Led Zeppelin first album. Once again an excellent list.

I've enjoyed all of your lists so far. It's your gig, you set up the KZbin account etc. I disagreed with your choice in the Roxy Music worst to best, but know that subjectivity is the bright light of navigation here. And so, of course, I'm going to suggest Roxy Music's debut should be on this list because it was so startling, so different and so unprecedented. Surely Dr Feelgood's 'Down by the Jetty' has to be circling near any top ten debuts list. I'd point as well to Weezer's 'Blue' album, plus The Chameleons' debut 'Script of the Bridge'; Kate Bush's 'The Kick Inside' has certainly got to be considered too. But your list clearly reflects a certain taste in music and it's not a bad list at all. Okay, you're caught up with the Crimsons, some of it revolves around doors, you take joy in division, I'm sure even your own mother wouldn't freak out at Frank - though it might be a strange experience. How come you didn't mention Elvis nicking his cover design from The Clash? Interesting post. I'm never going to see a 'best of' list anywhere I fully agree with. In the mean time this was pretty good. Keep doing your lists.

Can't argue with the top 3 (4) here, (I was going to suggest them as I was getting nervous that he had not gotten to the Doors, Hendrix, or KC yet...), but I would also like to toss in the Cars, The Police Outlandos d'Amour, and, of course, Led Zeppelin I. The intro to that album is possibly the greatest "we have arrived" moment in all of popular culture...
