In this video, I will share with you my insights on how to choose the best candling device for your camping trips. A candling device is a term coined by Dave Canterbury, and it refers to any flashlight or lantern that you use to illuminate your campsite at night1. I will explain why you don’t need too much light, and what are the ideal features of a good candling device. You will learn how to use a pocket flashlight for focused lighting, and a lantern or oil lamp for area lighting, without being a nuisance to yourself or others

Nice discussion. I carry both a luci lantern and an OLight headlight/flashlight when backpacking but hadn't really consciously thought about them in terms of "ambient" vs. "spot" lighting. Just sort of intuitively brought what I might need in different situations. This crystalized the "why" for me. So thanks.

Thanks for sharing! for me it came about because i would have a powerful flashlight that had a long range beam great for night time cat fishing and doing trot lines.. but like a light sabre if you were not in the beam you were in the dark.. in contrast a area light was better for camp chores and stuff so the thought of area light vs focused light came to me i try to find lanterns / flashlight that can do both if possible

I’ve slowly been switching over to the USB powered lights. I have a small but high capacity power bank that I have as support for my entire system. My small hand-held lights, my ambient lights for around camp and in my tents and the small ,high powered flashlight I keep on my hip, for when it is truly the best tool for the job. The light/laser on my handgun, shotgun and rifles are also equipped with the same USB powered devices. I’m still in the evaluation process but am immensely pleased with my experiences so far. My power bank is similar in size to two cell phones stacked together and it will hold a charge for a VERY long time. The cost of the power bank was no more than the cost of filling everything with standard batteries and a set of spares for each device and I can count on MANY recharges to each device. Tech and miniaturization has come a LONG way in recent years and I have a hand-crank USB charger that is built into a radio with a small flashlight of its own and I can power my cell phone and even my main power bank from it. It seems to be a very complete kit and checks a LOT of boxes. Just my two cents. At some point, I may add a solar charger to the kit. Lots of choices for those now too.

Beautiful ships lantern. I have several deitz kerosene lanterns and three Aladdin lanterns. Two antique pressurized kerosene lanterns from Germany with self sparking lighters and alcohol warming cups. I love the uco candle, got three of those with attached match safes hanging in each bedroom of the house. I have a coast 250 lumin pen light in my truck ,on my belt pouch ,and one in my Haversac. 2 aaa run time is 36 hours . No special modes like strobe or what ever just on and off and they are extra heavy duty and waterproof! Kind of expensive 45.00 each on sale . But I've never once been let down by one. Never have had a head lamp. Don't even like to wear a hat 🙄. I agree with everything you said. Good points and made good sense too.

I am also an amateur astronomer so spend a lot of time wandering around in dark areas! Almost all of my small flashlights are on lanyards that are just long enough that I can slip the lanyard around my neck and still drop the flashlight into my jacket pocket (so it isn't flopping around in my way) until I need it. That way, if you have to set it aside for a minute you can just let go and let it hang for a moment and also be assured it won't fall out of your pocket. There is nothing more frustrating than realizing you set your flashlight down then have to find it in the dark ... since you need a flashlight to then find your flashlight .

An outstanding video, Blackie. Thanks. How about the mountaineer’s candle light? I find them to be great for providing ambient light. The big bonus, especially for a bug-out bag, is the warmth they supply if you put one under a poncho. Bad things happen during emergencies. Often times we may be poorly dressed for the occasion. The trick of putting a candle under a poncho or a a bin bag being used as a poncho could literally be a life saver.

I used the Uco with 1 or 3 candles around 20 years ago when camping. Then got one of those LED with 3 C batteries. Lots of light but not where you want it, no shade to direct it. Don't camp anymore, but use all of them for when the power goes out, plus a copper candle lantern from Westminster Forge that goes well a few pots/cookers I bought. Nice soft light with candles. For emergencies we do have the large MagLite and I have a Thrunite headlamp that are rechargeable with a few battery options.

Not long winded ,you always give good info and I don't mind a bit, im going to look for those vont lights, I have a good rechargeable that will go sun up to sun down, however their quite expensive, but it doubles as a USB power source as well, but the downside of that is, if you use itbto charge your phone your cutting runtime off your light, my ATV is set up nicely for bushcraft so I have added multiple 12volt ways to charge things.

You made some valid points, good video! I've got a couple solar panels to keep my lights charged if I'm going on a extended trip. They sell those little ones with multiple panels but I've not had much luck with those. The ones I use are about the size of a notebook but thicker. They really don't weigh much but actually work. I wouldn't put them on my dashboard like you talked about though. There's a good chance you'll overheat it and damage it. I always take two or three flashlights in case one fails. A lesson learned the hard way. I like lights that use 18650 batteries best. They give a lot more run time than AA and AAA batteries. I carry an extra battery for every light I'm taking. That way I can have plenty of battery power during the night and I can swap the batteries out for my spare batteries and be charging the drained ones on the solar charger during the day along with my phone. I think flashlights are some of my most important gear, it's no fun not being able to see at night. My favorite is the Wowtac A25 headlight. I've got piles of headlights and it's definitely the best out of all of them. I use mine constantly and I've had it around a year now. It's been dropped and been wet more times than I can remember. It can go over 1000 lumens but it can also be really dim if needed. One of the best things about it is it's only around thirty dollars and it goes on sale for under twenty five bucks sometimes. It's on sale on Amazon right now I think. It was a couple of days ago at least. And no I don't work or get paid by them. LOL I just thought I'd recommend a good solid light that don't cost much.

This is an illuminating vid - sorry, I had to say that :) Anyways, I'm kinda surprised that you didn't mention candles. One of my favorite camp hacks is to light up 3 votive candles and place them at the perimeter of my camp. They provide enough ambient light to get things done in camp without giving away your location. Like you, I prefer a dark camp and really don't need any light because I had plenty of daylight to get to know the location. I know where everything is. My favorite light source would have to be the moon. For the most part, it does a good job of lighting things up and I don't need any artificial lighting. I just have to work on that urge to howl.

Redundancy in outdoor lighting is key. I don't like the Coleman lanterns because the bugs come around them. But I like to read & tie steelhead flies at night & they're good for that. A penlight with an empty eye drops bottle slipped over the lens end is ok for diffused ambient light. The old Boy Scout trick of using a Mr. Peanut can with a wire bail for horizonal suspension with a kitchen candle coming through the bottom side so the flame reflects off the shiny inside works well for me. Maglights often have a spare bulb under the battery compartment lid.

I too may have had an interest in participating in an educational, historically accurate and honest presentation. Always hated the to be blinded by a 1100 lumen head lamp on the way back from the outhouse in the wee hours before wake up call. It was worse when I realized that I too was wearing one....."primitive" camping...go figure. Thank you for all you do and teach.

There are two reasons why the first thing an officer often does when he stops someone is to shine their flashlight on the persons face: 1) To get a good look at them and 2) As a defense mechanism because now the person cannot see the officer due to being temporarily blinded.

Hi Blackie, I always bring extra light sources and batteries with me camping, just in case. That ship lantern you have is really cool. I have a Coleman Northstar lantern that I bought over 20 yrs ago, that goes with me camping always. Love that lantern, it's the liquid fuel one and it has electronic ignition so you don't have to worry about matches. I personally like green light over red at night. I have a green light on my headlamp and green filters for several of my flashlights. It doesn't effect your night vision either and you can see farther than the red. I like that Vont lantern you have, I've been looking for a small LED lantern to have for inside of the tent. Didn't know they had such a long runtime. I'll have to get one of those. Thanks! 👍🔦🕯

Redundancy, I used to do a lot of caving. Always, one of the main things that all cavers have to do, is each have 3 separate working lights. I carried spare bulbs and batteries for them, also. Caves are pitch black and if for some reason your only light goes out, you could die before you find your way out.

Cant say ive used much beyond the fire for ambient light outside at the camp site. Enclosed spaces such as tents... or coming into my living space early in the morning (so i dont wake anyone up) i usually just take what ever flashlight i have or the one on my phone and just point it at the ceiling. Light colors tend to yield the brightest ambiance outside of lumen intensity. Sidenote: while the red lens is common, green is best for night vision as the green spectrum is whats most abundant at night; which is what night vision goggles function on.

I would recommend the Malkoff singleAA for a pocket light. Almost indestructible, first setting is less than a lumen, second is good to walk, 3rd to spot far. 1" front so easy to put a red lens or just a coca cola plastic cap... Expensive but worth it IMO.

Back in March I picked up an Olight Baton 3. Had I for 6 weeks & lost it while getting my COVID shot, so many people there I didn’t get it back. So I finally replaced it & this one I keep on a paracord lanyard. The reason I lost the first one is the magnet is strong enough to stick to keys but not strong enough to keep it there for long. So my lanyard is just under 48”, ya that sounds long but you fold it in half & add a cord lock to make it very adjustable & as a break away. I loop this around a belt & larks head the cord to the pocket clip. There has been a few times when I take out my keys & there’s the light. I found an Olight case that has a ring on it so now I can wear the case or add it to the cord. The cord also lets me hang it many ways & has worked out great. I was never a big fan of lanyards but they work & you get to trust it.

LOL, i was just thinking about this just a week or so ago. How much light do i need? I just need to look for something on the ground, read a text in my hand or get out of a dark building. At night i prefer to use my night vision (Mark one, eyeball). to move around. I do NOT need to search for and target B-17's at 30 000 feet. i have three small flashlights on different places in my belt and pants pockets. Duration over lumens.

I like hurricane lanterns especially when it's cool. As far as rechargeable solar powered lanterns. Mines cheap, water proof ,light ,compact ,and has a long run time.

Good job but you didn’t cover how lights attract bugs no one on KZbin use a yellow cover on their lantern like I have on my Colman gas lantern. Or how red light lens covers help you retain your night vision especially if you are a star gazer you still can see stars.

Those very bright flashlights can be used with black paper to start emergency fires without ruining them (shorting the battery)😂

These are NOT candling devices because there are no candles involved., What they ARE is flashlights and lanterns. I carry a real candling device, a little glass and steel container that you can put a lit candle into for ambient light. It doesn't need oil or batteries. Just a cheap candle.
