I 'd have to say Bolt Thrower. They once went into the studio, realised their material wasn't as good as their previous album, and just on that basis decided to NOT RECORD AN ALBUM. Then when their drummer died, they broke up the band instead of replacing him.

The narrator of this video said: "but I would argue that they never had the chance to sell out, in order to sell out you have to be a band big enough to sell out" That statement right there makes no sense to me because the whole reason why a band would want to sell out is so they will become famous and Rich. Otherwise if you're already a big band making tons of money then what would be the point of wanting to sell out for the fame and gold you already have? For instance Jimmy Page sold out way before Zeppelin became huge.

Otherwise if you're already a big band making tons of money then what would be the point of wanting to sell out for the fame and gold you already have? For instance Jimmy Page sold out way before Zeppelin became huge. If some of them do get big without selling out, it's not because they really have talent as far as playing their instruments and structuring music correctly as far as music theory goes. It's because they knew someone and they have a catchy band name and catchy power cord riffs and because everything nowadays is pretentious, fake, CGI, Auto-Tune and very superficial without depth meaning or substance. And that's what the masses are conditioned to listening to now and have been so dumbed down by it because it's so robotic and repetitive and repetition is an excellent form of mind control that will dumb you down and give you a short attention span so that when they do try to listen to anything that has real talent and depth they don't understand it. In other words it's a lot easier to get big nowadays.
@Gregbaltzer
@Gregbaltzer 3 күн бұрын
@@Jew_Lie_the_4th it's a lot harder to get big these days. There's so much music available that it's harder to get noticed. Record labels don't gamble on bands anymore. There's no royalties from record sales. There's very little record label push. Touring is expensive, and there's too many bands touring all competing against each other. There's very little revenue in streaming. The only real revenue is merch and now lots of venues are trying to take a cut in that. Look at festivals, all the headlining acts are 30-40 years old, because there are so few current acts that are big enough to draw people in. Go back to the 70s, 80s, and 90s and most festivals were headlined by the big acts of the time. There's no MTV, or Much Music pushing bands anymore to create contemporary stars. The entire infrastructure right now is against bands making it big.
@Jew_Lie_the_4th
@Jew_Lie_the_4th 3 күн бұрын
@@Gregbaltzer Yes in that aspect it is harder to get in because there's a lot more bands out there nowadays but in the past like in the 60s and 70s the standards in which you had to have as a band for instance talent and musical compositioning that was demanded back then for you to even get big. I mean just look at the kind of crap they allow out now compared to back then. I could get in a band nowadays and make it somehow because all's I would need to do is learn two or three bar chords on the guitar. You can even hear the popularity of what was being played on the radio back in those days and you can tell the talent was much greater. There's always been basic pop and mainstream metal but the stuff they're putting out now is just absolutely foolish.

Spotify (or Apple Music in my case) is the only way I would have ever run across bands and artists like Chat Pile, Hatchie, The Beths, Dance with the Dead, fuckin' IDLES... so many bands that I've now spent considerable amounts of money on that I never would have heard of unless their music was readily available. Several years back there was a big 80's music guy whining on Facebook about how "little" Spotify pays per listen. "Why back in my (Steve Lukather. It was Steve Lukather) day we would make $20,000 every time one of our songs was played in a major media market!" I did the math for him. In a top ten media market, assuming that's a real number, they would have made LESS per-listener than what he quoted Spotify as paying per-stream at the time. The only thing that had changed is that his bands don't get anywhere near the number of people listening to them BY CHOICE and that's where the brainfail kicks in. They can't comprehend the idea that maybe nobody gives a shit about their music anymore. "It can't be that five million streams is quite literally the equivalent of a single radio play in a major market, can it? It's five million! That should be like buying five million albums, right?!?" Like all boomer-asses when confronted with the truth, he blocked me. It was glorious.

As for Napalm Death, yes they incorporated more groove on the Diatribes album, but was it still SOUNDED like Napalm Death, and was far from a commercially accessible album in the mid 90s. Great band. A couple more for the list: Faith No More. After "The Real Thing" came out, they really could have capitalized on that sound. Instead, they followed up with "Angel Dust", which, from what I understand, really pissed off the label. CLUTCH. While their sound changed after the first album, it wasn't to chase a trend. They were a band of punk kids who loved ZZ Top and Deep Purple, and those influences blossomed in a unique way. One of my favorite bands.

Fun list, glad I discovered this channel. Not to be a music history nerd but seems the place to do it, if we're praising the bass sound of Tool, we have to give credit to it's originator Paul D'Amour, who played on the first couple Tool recordings and admitted to teaching Justin Chancellor the tone settings and play style when D'Amour gave the job over to him. Chancellor totally took it and made it his own and even better, but it was there when he started to job.

I'm glad the Bloke put Tool on the list. I think Tool has a much larger spectrum of fans than most of those other bands on the list and could have easily sold out, but went the total opposite direction making 10 minute long radio unfriendly songs. Now I would argue that they are the biggest band in the world headlining every rock festival on the planet.

@@butchvito I wasn't being pretentious, my point was that without any publicity from radio and mainstream outlets because they never sold out they have arguably become the biggest band in the world 35 years after their conception which I believe speaks volumes to how great of a band they are. He's admitted he wrote these more commercial sounding albums to fund the other things he wanted to do. Sky Blue allowed him to do Z²:Dark Matter and doing PowerNerd will allow him to do The Moth. Having said that, I think Sky Blue is still a wonderful, emotional record, even if his heart wasn't fully in it.

Children of Bodom. Around ~2003 big American record label offered them a lucrative deal, but they wanted the growling singing to be replaced by clean ones and they had some other ideas to make them more mainstream. No surprise, the band's frontman Alexi Laiho told them to fuck off. Another good one was when they made cover of Brittney Spears' Oops!…I Did It Again and some of the gatekeeper metalheads burned their COB shirts and records, and whined a lot because they didn't like it. The band responded to this and they mocked the gatekeepers in many different interviews. They just happened to be musicians who also liked other genres and that became their inside joke, when at gigs they played small clips of well-known songs by different artists, such as Rihanna, Lady Gaga etc. This second one is more about not being sellouts to the gatekeepers, which i really like.

Ramones was one of the biggest sellout bands ever. But they could never not sound like themselves, and that's what made them great.

Great video man! I feel like perhaps some people might disagree with Nirvana being on the list, not because of their transition from Nevermind to In Utero but for going from Bleach to Nevermind. Even they themselves (especially Kurt) sort of cringed about that album's "clean" production and obviously more streamlined sound compared to Bleach's more raw compositions and grittier production. I'm definitely not talking shit, they are my favorite band of all time, and I don't even think they necessarily "sold out" anyway, but I figured perhaps some others might talk shit about that pick. Cheers.

Danny Carey and Thomas Haake are the reason why I've started to learn the drums, even though I don't think that I'll ever be able to learn one of their songs at my age. But at elast it gives me something to work towards, you know? I didn't know about Dillinger Escape Plan, but sounds like they might be up my alley as well.

I think Mercyful Fate could also be added to the list. They literally broke up after 2 albums because King refused to use Hank's new material that was more commercial, and even though the early albums are still superior, they've kept the same tone throughout the decades.

It's the eternal argument.....what is the actual definition of "selling out"? To cater to your fans with just about every release, or to do what you want in the studio regardless of any fan opinion or potential backlash... With that said, I will always say Metallica never actually sold out. To stay true to your own ideas and goals as the artist is more important than expectation. Cheers \m/

fun fact about ian mackaye of fugazi - he is actually much wealthier than a lot of bands that did sell out. because he's a stock market investing wizard. but just as with his music career, he has an ethical approach and doesn't invest in stocks that go against his beliefs.

You said it few times now, in few different videos (also in the old channel), that you don't enjoy Jinjer that much. Personally had the biggest buzz towards that band since Pantera's Vulgar CD landed on my CD player. Now, I'm not trying to convert anyone here, just curious what's the issue there? Why ask now? Was just listening what you said about Meshuggah and Dillinger, just got me curious.

My ex-wife & sister-in-law's band supported Napalm Death in '96 during the 'Diatribes' tour when they really changed style, it was jarring compared to the old grindcore & they neglected most of their early material, band morale was low & Barney Greenway departed immediately after the tour. Flashforward to 2017 when my own band supported Napalm Death & it was almost the opposite, their setlist was a mixture of early classics & new songs, with the groove mid-period mostly ignored. Having said that, there were original ND fans who felt they "sold out" when they went death metal on 'Harmony Corruption'! They've definitely stuck to the idealogy though, so fair call on their inclusion for this list, which has some excellent choices like Dillinger who went out on top. Cannibal Corpse are death metal kings, with an honourable mention to Immolation, they definitely belong on this list. Original Tool bassist Paul D'Amour deserves credit for laying down the foundation that Chancellor built on.

Hmmm...OK. Let's start with the icons of doom, Sunn o))). Stephen O'Malley has never...well, actually may be incapable of it...selling out. They created an album that is so sonically terrorizing ("Black One") that although I own a copy, I have yet to put it on straight-thru on my own. Or when they teamed up with 60s popster Scott Walker...with the results being so discomforting that the album ("Soused") makes me feel like I need a shower after playing it. Plus...they run Southern Lord, an entire LABEL that refuses to sell out. Then more quality doom: Bongripper. Their very first track on their very first album ("Reefer Sutherland", on "Hippie Killer") sets the pace and they DO NOT let up thereafter. They also did an album entitled "Satan Worshipping Doom"...and if you title an album THAT, you're either going to BRING IT, or it's a sellout. Yeah, they brought it...daaaaaaamn, did they ever! Parliament/Funkadelic was conceptually incapable of selling out. For one thing, it was the same band, with two different names to circumvent a bad early record deal because the music simply HAD TO come out. The Mother ship Connection tour (which I still feel privileged to have seen) nearly bankrupted them, but they HAD TO give the music its proper setting. And yes, they had HITS...but they were just as smokin' as the deeper cuts on the albums. And ultimately, "Maggot Brain" let their guitarist Eddie Hazel up the "epic solo" criteria to places it hadn't gone to. Plus, the completely deranged cartoon covers by Pedro Bell on several Funkadelic albums are like "Where's Waldo?" on PCP. Closest thing you can compare 'em to was Frank Zappa's various band formations...but Frank DID sell out (albeit as a deliberate act to sneak his subversive stuff into unsuspecting suburbanite record collections, which might NOT actually be "selling out") somewhat. Kinda. Acid Mothers Temple. I have no idea how many projects Makoto Kawabata has helmed, but every time I grab an AMT album from ANY period, I always get a different take on the same chemically-fueled audio madness. Frank Zappa's early by-line of "no commercial potential" fits here nicely. Plus, they've collaborated with a ton of artists...and even THOSE fit into the overall lysergic chaos-scape. And last but not least...Van der Graaf Generator. Yes, "The Silent Zone/The Pleasure Dome" COULD be construed as a "sellout"...until you start paying attention to Peter Hamill's weird and broodingly-psychotic lyrics. And that's as close as they ever got. The REST of the time, they were the caustic counterparts of other prog bands; for every "Roundabout" you would get from "commercial" prog, VdGG would serve up it's disturbing counterpart. Even their 21st century output follows the same zero-compromise standard, although they tend toward somewhat more straightforward topics, the music STILL hits right. And, amazingly, Gary Numan. Tbh, his hits from the post- punk era were more of a fluke than targeted sell-out fodder. Even when his brand of synthpop fell out of fashion, he kept right on plugging away...and he's still a formidable talent to this day, still not compromising his vision. In fact, his closer when I saw him in Chicago a few years ago was "Are 'Friends' Electric?", but he changed the last line... He swept his arms around toward the band and then the audience, and firmly stated "You see... THIS means EVERYTHING to me!" And when you're a sellout...nothing of the sort enters into your mind. It was one of those "raison d'etre" moments, to be sure!

Iron Maiden the Greatest Heavy Metal Band ( music in general) Ever. Iron Maiden never sold their soul to mainstream for fame and fortune like many other bands did , specialy that american band with 3 great/ historical albums didin't had the slightest problem (conscience) of "betraying" their fans and themselfes. Well at least they have all the Fame and Fortune enough for 100 lives but don't have the Respect of the people who did support them from the first second,first album and the rest is history...full of shitty music and full of Posers as theirs fanbase. Iron Maiden after 45+ years and 200 million records sold and still sell out arenas all over the World. Iron Maiden have the Biggest and most Loyal fanbase on the Heavy Metal World ( and in general). Respect and Loyalty for what you Love and for the ones who always did and still support them is the Ultimate Currencie/ Credebility in life. Iron Maiden are the Epitome and Face of Real and True Heavy Metal music.

It's a weird thing because you never know what motivates a band. Sometimes I really believe bands aren't catering to styles as much as they're being influenced by them. Eg. Morgoth. I was reading when they were talking about Farewell to the Fanatics they were saying that originally they came from a secluded area of Germany and their music was influenced by the little bit of heavy music they heard. Later as they started to tour they got exposed to all this other music forms of music and they were really influenced by Ministry when they made that album. Our tastes change as we age and get exposed to different things, different ideas, and different ways of making music that we never thought of. I hate the Kerry King way of thinking that "bands should stay within their genre." I think bands should make whatever music they want. To me selling out is when you don't stay true to yourself. I agree with Lars "always giving fans what they want is a form of selling out." If you're constantly making the same album over and over because you think that's what the fans want, even if you want to do something different, then yes you've sold out. It's like Kerry King when he was making Repentless he didn't let Gary write anything because he said "I don't think Slayer fans are ready for Gary to write on a Slayer album." Right there he was thinking about making the album he thinks the fans want, and catering to them instead of making the the artistic choice.

Great list. Very happy to see the Melvins on here, as they were my first thought for this idea. Buzz Osbourne almost seems like the personification of "not giving a fuck what you think". The weird thing I think about this idea though is that a lot of bands were accused of selling out because they changed their sound. I think the biggest band accused of that were Metallica, although I think AFI was always leveled that charge as well. Basically I think that a lot of bands don't experiment much outside of their niche because they don't want to alienate fans. But of the bands that do experiment and lose fans, you can tell they've not sold out because they keep experimenting. As far as absolute sellouts, my picks would be Sugar Ray or the Goo Goo Dolls. Not metal - although they were both "heavy" before they sold out - but very blatant.
