I was disappointed it wasn't really a mutant baby. Capcom had the chance to feature something really creepy and unusual, with a potentially dark backstory. Now it just feels like a wasted opportunity. If I wanted to watch filler hallucination segments in zombie horror, I'd watch Walking Dead.

This section of the game does work as far as what you're saying about the characters themselves. I just think it might've been better if the baby was real, and that real baby mutant is what triggers the hallucinations. He imagines the baby as his own daughter, rather than it not existing at all.

Think like this, when it says “you are dead” it means Ethan dies through a heart attack therefore his heart stops moving it. When you push “restart” button, the mold will regen/fix Ethan’s heart thus his heart starts moving it. Nah, im joking. Its a game

I like to imagine that much of the information in this sequence wasn't just made up by Donna playing off Ethan's fears. That maybe Mia had what she thought was a miscarriage, only to her horror, find a half formed fetus, still alive Only for its regenerative abilities to start healing it to a healthy baby form over the next few moments, before she can get help or proccess the trauma of the event. The whole event leaving her broken down saying "It'll be fine, It'll be fine, It'll be fine". and that if this happened while Ethan was for some reason busy or away, he'd not know anything was wrong aside from her being premature.

You're not the only one. The molded monsters in RE7 weren't scary, nor were the mutated forms of Jack, Margeruite, and Lucas (via the DLC). Even Eveline's final form wasn't really scary. Creepy, yes, but that's another matter. The Baby Fetus in Village on the other hand, I felt was getting a bit too close to crossing a line. Assuming if this was all in your head and merely mental torture, even the Silent Hill games didn't take things THAT far....

I think the baby is a reflection of Ethan's biggest fear that the mold may harm his daughter and turn her into a monster. That fear may have been there since Mia is pregnant. The incident in RE7 makes Ethan always live in a fear of the mold so he get trained and prepared for any thing that come after him and his family.

In the beginning of the game, there's a medical report about Rose in Ethans house. At the end of the report, it said the doctors had to meet Ethan and Mia in person to talk about whether Rose had mold or not. After you put down the document, Ethan starts worrying and tells himself " Rose will be fine, she will be fine", but it's clear he was worried that Rose may have mold and become a monster. I love this house section because it really capitalizes on his fear for his daughter and shows how bad the baker house messed up Ethan.

At the beginning of the game when Ethan read Rose's medical report, we can clearly see that Ethan really hopes his child is normal. This supports that the fetus monster is actually his fear of his child becoming like that.

If that is so, then it would make sense, as it is basically a hallucinatory exploitation of his darkest thoughts that Donna used as a weapon against his mind. Obviously though, with how resilient Ethan is, that did not end well for her.

It's interesting how the male perspective goes to "the baby is harming Mia/tearing Mia apart" while every woman I've talked to immediately went to "Mia discovered that's something in the pregnancy isn't going well with the baby" or "she was pregnant again after giving birth to Rose and had no choice but to abort/was forced to have an abortion" and that this aborted fetus is haunting Ethan here. Because that's exactly what the baby looks like plus a little creative freedom of the dev team. Unfortunate cell mutations do happen in the early stages of pregnancy and are one of the top reasons for medically ending a pregnancy or a miscarriage. Where does the info that the baby is tearing Mia apart from the inside come from? I haven't found any hints in the game and the dialogue from Mia's voice recordings is too vague to confirm this, imho.

I think the reason everyone thinks the baby monster tore Mia apart is because after the well segment, you return to find Mia's body is gone and replaced with tons of blood and an umbilical cord leading away from her table. This implies the monster originated from her. Plus, the fact her body was in shambles in the well implies the birth was....messy, for lack of words. It honestly looks like the baby exploded out of her and slithered away.

This was without a doubt the most Silent Hill psychological effed up thing ever done in the RE series. Its reminded me of Lisa's character in the RE1 remastered with her character also being a one hit kill (until that final level with her in the chamber) but I mean, ABSOLUTELY a mind eff. You felt bad for both character, Lisa and the fetus baby. Lisa jumping to her death to reunite with her dead mother. The baby fetus being something of any parents nightmare which is when your pregnant wife is unable to carry to term a healthy baby and you are HELPLESS to help her because you can't do anything. Dude, this whole part was absolutely brilliant. An entire "chapter" with zero fighting, nothing but puzzles, reminiscent and fearful scenes, with one of the most terrifying moments I think I've ever experienced in a game that wasn't pure jump scare. When you see that thing through the locker vents the first time, I was just like "Now THIS is true horror." Well done, RE...well done...

@@DerpyICEcube I haven't played the game but have watched playthroughs, and while I understand what you say about it not comparing to other boss fights, in regards to the fear factor, none of the other boss's were as terrifying as running from that fetus monster so I feel like it is equal to some of the other boss fights. The lesser ones maybe, but in sheer feeling, it causes more emotion than others so I think it balances itself out. Hope I made myself clear. All the best to you all

I have another scarring theory. Rose had probably the best regenerative abilities we've seen so far, being able to be split apart and put back together. During the Basement puzzles when you hear Mia through the radio freaking out, apologizing, and saying she had to do it, what if she means having to abort Rose or that she was miscarried. Only after the fetus/Rose was removed, did she heal herself after that horrific birth?

I wonder if part of Rose's power is that she's able to absorb Mold powers from others. Notice that when Miranda touches her at the end she says "my power is leaving me" and as soon as Ethan touches her he starts to turn to dust as well. Maybe Rose is the awakened Megamycete and absorbs all the mold and things in it.

he turned to dust because he pushed the mold's ability to regenerate to its absolute limits. he was already pushing it past what it was really capable of when it brought him back to life a second time, and the battle with Miranda exhausted anything the mold had left. The only thing that had been driving him at this point was the desire to save his child, even at the expense of himself, which is why the second Miranda was dead and he finally had Rose, his body began crumbling. There was nothing that could stop him from dying at this point because the mold was all that was keeping him alive, and with it spent it was only a matter of time until he disintegrated like any other mold consumed creature does upon death.

@@deveous8629 P.T. stood for "Playable Trailer" that was available for a brief time on Steam and the like. It was roughly a 20 min demo involving a repeating corridor and supernatural events. Only by completing a string of very-specific actions can the true 'ending' of the demo be unlocked which revealed it was all a teaser for a new game called "Silent Hills". It was supposed to be the next iteration for the Silent Hill series, but unfortunately was canceled entirely soon after P.T. went live. The demo was removed from Steam and all other stores soon after and can never be played again unless you somehow didn't uninstall the file. It was THE horror game everyone had been swooning over at the time and many are still mourning the loss of what could have been. There are still videos of people playing the entire trailer demo including all 'endings' on KZbin if you want to see how scary it was.

Considering so many other imaginative Resident Evil monster designs throughout the franchise's hostory, I was disappointed in RE 7's designs. They came off as the result of lazy creature design.
