Agreed... I'd say it's because it was so tricky to find as a series. Often word spreads around through word of mouth. Because The Terror was initially exclusive to a couple of platforms at first, its audience was far smaller. Hopefully when it comes to BBC iplayer in the UK it will get a lot more attention.

I would have preferred if there was no monster, but it sorta makes sense from a production standpoint. The scenes with and about the monster add necessary screen time, or filler if you will. I still feel like the mutiny and cannibalism subplots would have been enough to carry the series without the monster. Before I saw the monster, I assumed that the Esquimaux legend referred to men becoming monsters (through cannibalism) and not a literal beast.

The writing, gripping… the pace was very good… I mean, it’s just a marvelous show. I think it could have done without the monster though tbh and been more of a psychological thriller. @@rocioquiroz11The Tuunbaq was in the book. @SirBenjiful Жыл бұрын
@@carsonlombardi7361The problem with adapting the Tuunbaq is that it's described very vaguely in the book because nobody who gets a good look at it lives for long, and it seems to appear by materialising from the environment rather than approaching from a particular direction. In the text it's described as a vengeful spirit created by a god from Inuit mythology. It has an agreement with the Inuit shamans which it honours by not attacking humans but the Europeans fuck that up by barging into its land without honouring the deal, which is why it starts hunting them (it first attacks right after they accidentally kill a shaman). On a metatextual level it functions as a sort of personification of the arctic reacting to these arrogant men turning up woefully unprepared.

My guess is that it was from the late 60s or early to mid 70s. It was kind of steam punk if I remember correctly, almost in the Jules Verne kind of relm. Anyway the ship couldnt move and there was something floating on the water, which could have been what was keeping them from moving. The people on the ship could walk on the substance that was on the surface of the water but they needed to wear these balloon (helium) type devices that kept them from sinking. I only ever saw the film once when I was very young and would love to see it again.

I felt they could have done a little better with the cgi bear. It in no way ruined my experience but it did make me say it was to bad it wasn’t a bit better.

Why wasn't Tuunbaq explained? Yes, you figure out it's some kind of Inuit familiar, but in the book it goes into depth explaining Tuunbaq as a familiar of the goddess Sedna. When passing through its territory, the Inuit pay homage to Tuunbaq - thus, it's said that the appearance of kabloona (the white men) is an indicator of end times as Tuunbaq's rage is brought upon the world of men as the white explorers do not pay homage to it. In the TV series, it seems like Tuunbaq is some kind of friend to the Inuit which is seriously kind of weird. Yes, Silna is supposed to be responsible for it, but it's not some kind of pet that she loves but rather a serious undertaking as a shaman. This makes the show's theme more of "muh racism, the white man dont understand that big polar bear is supposed to be fren" rather than "the hubris of european expeditionaries in the arctic, believing they could survive without series reconsideration of their tactics, is something that was payed for dearly by the franklin expedition". The book even has a more satisfying ending, with Crozier needing to become a shaman himself by getting his tongue ripped out (which is artistically juxtaposed with Crozier's Irish Catholic taking of the Eucharist) to satisfy the creature, then joining the Inuit and finally starting the family he always longed for with Silna. Why, in the series, did Hickey know the tongue thing was what needed to happen to "take control" of Tuunbaq? This series was very good, but the jagged ending just can't be justified and shows film's constant need need to fuck up a perfectly good story since book adaptations first began.

While I like the book better (probably because I read it before watching the show) this is definitely one of the best shows on tv and has phenomenal performances.

Really great series. The second series had a good idea, but kinda bungled it.

I haven't seen it yet myself, though from what I've heard the tale of ghosts haunting the Japanese internment camps during WW2 wasn't anywhere near as good as the first season. Might check it out at some point regardless.

It is kind of funny how they show like if these guys actually care for the natives. Good show but that is a big background sound.

A hidden gem... Oh it's hidden alright. At this point, I haven't even had the chance to get a glimpse of the damned thing, since I live in Denmark and the show is nowhere to be found on any of the streaming services, available in my country. I've been searching the internet for a physical copy of it (which would actually be preferable, over streaming it), but I've only managed to come across copies, that were restricted to region A/1, so that won't do me any good. It sucks soaking buns....... as in BALLS! Judging from the trailer and what I've heard about it so far, it would seem like the type of show you don't wanna miss out on. Well....... I'm kinda missing out here :'-(

I'd recommend either Amazon to see if they have the series as a digital box-set or perhaps a VPN might help. In any case, I'm glad my review of the series is reaching further afield and that you're eager to check out the series yourself.

@@CainageCritique Thank you for the tip, I do appreciate you trying to help out a fellow dane in his desperate search. However, as it turns, the universe is certainly not without its own set of quirks, cause less than a full day after I posted my comment about not being able to find the show anywhere in Denmark.... it gets available on blu ray for pre order, on a danish online store, called "Laserdisken", which easily translate to "The Laserdisc"!!! Now I just feel a little embarrassed.... and also I'm anxiously waiting in anticipation. :-D :-D :-D Nevertheless, thanks again, for coming to my aid. That was very thoughtful. Many regards.

Firmly committed to realism yes but why the monster? It’s a cool good show that’s just not really my thing and I’m fascinated with the Franklin expedition so I want to know the real answers but I guess everyone else does to

Yeah I do *kind of* think the show portrayed him a lot different than the real person. The real Sir John was described as being one of the nicest men you could ever meet, while in the show he is quite stern in many ways.

I loved the show but the whole suspense of the Tuunbaq was poorly executed. I didn’t like the fact how it was revealed in like episode 5 and it was just underplayed as a thing that’d pop in and kill a few guys before leaving. The whole soul thing was brought up once near the end and I’m just sat there thinking where the hell did this come from? It’s the same with the book on that part as well
@CainageCritique3 жыл бұрын
I can see where folks are coming from with this perspective. Perhaps it could have been more ambiguous, the men going mad as they can't tell if it's a monster hunting them or paranoid delusions. Might have made for an interesting kind of suspense.

Very much enjoyed the series and good it's on the bbc now it will garner more attention. However, like many have said before, they went ott on the supernatural. I understand they're following the story written in the book. But personally, I would have liked a sprinkling of supernatural elements, but stopped short of the physical manifestation of the beast. Would have kept the hallucinations, both underwater and from the dying lad. And some of the other creepy elements. Just felt the beast was too far for me. The crew had enough to deal with as it was, there is enough subject matter there
@CainageCritique3 жыл бұрын
Some folks do prefer a version as historically accurate as possible and I can see where they're coming from. A director like Paul Greengrass gets audiences as close to the real thing as possible. It would be interesting to see a different take on the Franklin Expedition with that kind of focus.
@ronoccc3 жыл бұрын
@@CainageCritique good point. a film perhaps, as a series has already been done now. telling the story as close to as it was. but despite the discovery of the ships themselves in recent times, and some documents, the expedition will forever be shrouded in mystery to a certain extent. so whatever story you tell, there is always going to be some fiction in there for sure.but yes, personally i enjoyed the element of the supernatural, just not sure a beast would have been the way i would have gone. excellent series nonetheless, big fan of the 3 lead actors
