The whole dinner table scene is so viscerally disturbing, not just because of the skin/human furniture, but also because of how gleeful and AMUSED the family is by her terror and desperation. Also, I think she gets away because the family has gotten so USED to doing this stuff that they’re not even paying full attention to her; she’s just a slab of meat, not an autonomous person capable of escape. They’ve gotten complacent and sloppy.

What I've always loved is that Mr. Hooper's seminal horror movie is considered one of the goriest movies made... and yet, it's relatively bloodless. An absolute masterwork in using the implication of violence rather than showing the gore. One reason it felt so gritty and nasty was that filming was pretty brutal (115 degrees, not bathing for 5 weeks, etc). As the Final Girl's actress admited, that scene of her losing her mind in the back of the truck wasn't acting.
@timcardona9962
@timcardona9962 11 ай бұрын
"the implication of violence" - We see 2 men get beaten with a mallet, a girl put on a meat hook and half-dead corpse suck the blood off of a girl's finger. Not to mention the Bone Room. That's violence and its not "implied"; it is shown to us with lingering shots and close-ups. Not gory but this is definitely a violent movie.
@ThumblessJew
@ThumblessJew 11 ай бұрын
@@timcardona9962I think what he means is we don't see a lot of the gory detail. Yes, we see a girl get hung on a hook, and that is very violent, but we don't actually see any blood from the hook. It's in our imagination, and with the way the movie is shot, it works very well.

I always assumed this movie was extremely bloody and gorey. I didn't expect it to be as stylized and artsy as it is. The psychological horror is really the main event here. It rocketed to the top of my slasher movie list because of that

Fun Fact: The movie is only partly a true story. The character of Leatherface was inspired mainly by Edward Gein, who made household items from corpses in Wisconsin in the 1950s. Like lampshades made from human faces. But I guess THE WISCONSIN LAMPSHADE MASSACRE didn't sound so good. 😂

Why does everyone assume the truck driver is being stupid... the semi truck is at a dead stop .. is isnt a Honda Civic... it takes a little longer to start up and theres a guy with a chainsaw carving the door up. You just gonna sit there calmly for ten seconds getting that thing going

It always annoys me when people question why they didn’t just drive off in the semi. Do you know how long it takes for those trucks to get up to full speed? Thats true but i had also heard that originally Leatherface was suppose to stab his chainsaw into the door of the Truck which would have forced Sally and the Trucker to escape out of the truck but the moment they went to film the scene is when they found out the trucks door just wouldnt cut through the metal of the door which i guess would make it harder to build up the anxiety towards the ending, but hey they did it either way so still good. (Also im not sure if this is accurate but it was what i heard at some point)

An interesting fact, is that Gunnar Hansen's performance as Leatherface wasn't just about donning a mask and carrying on a chainsaw; No, but the director of the film Tobe Hooper gave the actor free rein to interpret his role as he wanted and gave Leatherface the personality he desired. Because of this, Hansen chose that Leatherface would be a mentally disabled and speechless man; This is why before filming his scenes the actor visited an asylum several times in order to learn the movements and behaviors of the admitted patients.

The most obvious example is the girl on the meat hook. We see absolutely nothing. Leatherface lifts her up and it cuts to her suspended, grabbing at the hook as if trying to lift herself off it. Obviously she's on some sort of harness. Yet, if they HAD tried to show the girl getting hung up, it probably wouldn't have had as strong a reaction.

I don't think I've seen a movie that disturbed me as much as Texas Chainsaw Massacre when I first saw it, I'm not claiming it's the greatest movie ever or anything but it is definitely up there on ther scale of disturbing horror movies due to how surreal it is, and the low budget feel works to its advantage
@Bluesit32
@Bluesit32 7 ай бұрын
It's not the greatest, but it's extremely unique. Both the budget and the conditions gave it a nightmarish quality, particularly the ending. It was over a hundred degrees in the shade and the lighting was only make it worse. The meat was real and beyond spoiled, filling the set with the smell of rot. After putting the make-up on the kid playing "Grandpa" (he was 19 at the time), he stated he would NOT go through it twice. In short, they needed to film every scene with him in it then and there. It had been over 24 hours since they slept. To show how messed up the actors were, Leatherface's dance at the end was entirely unscripted and had the people on set backing away in fear as Gunnar Hansen spun around and around, swinging the chainsaw, sometimes with one hand and not the tightest looking grip. You can't replicate that sort of madness.

Great movie. Thanks for the reaction upload. Two (fun?) facts: As a large man who had to work every day in triple-digit heat while wearing a wool costume that he couldn’t change out of, Gunnar Hansen already had it rough while making The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. He got so smelly by the end of production that the rest of the cast and crew avoided eating around him. And when Jerry (Allen Danzinger) discovers Leatherface’s slaughter room and then meets the man himself, the scream he lets out is genuine. It was apparently the first time he had seen Hansen in full costume.

So I drove trucks, and when you slam on the breaks like that to stop it can cause it to stall. Also, it takes a bit to get a big rig started, especially the old ones. When a chainsaw is about to come through the door and you’re in the middle of getting a rig to start you’re not likely to have enough time. It’s not a sedan, he made the right choice

You guys were right, this movie did mess a lot of people up. I believe it was Guillermo Del Toro that went vegetarian for a bit after watching this movie. Leatherface, the chainsaw guy in the movie, is partly based on Serial Killer Ed Gein who had his house decorated with human bones and skin in various capacities, that's why this movie feels so real. Also, Leatherface's mask is meant to be made of human skin in the movie. As far as this movie and its sequels, I'm working my way through them right now actually, so I don't really have much to say about them in terms of recommendations and such. A bit of a fyi though, they also kinda do the same thing the Halloween movies do from what I understand where there's like 5 or 6 movies, a reboot or 2 and some stuff connecting to them, and stuff that kinda just jumps around and connects in weird places and such, so the continuity between things can be a bit confusing.

More horrifying than Saw, I’ve never heard that before but I kind of agree. This one feels more realistic. For Saw at least you could say he has “reasoning” so as long as you’ve not wronged him or done anything and your just a good normal person then you don’t have anything to worry about like for example from what we learn about the friend group in this movie had the villain been Jigsaw I think they’d have been fine and wouldn’t have been a target. Whereas here Leatherface and family have no real reasoning other than wanting to make life as miserable and horrific for their victims as they can unless they just outright kill them. Brutality wise I think Saws violence can be worse depending on the trap but Texas chainsaw is probably more sadistic as they’re seen enjoying it more whereas Jigsaw doesn’t enjoy the pain and suffering he puts his victims through as it’s all part of the process.

I love when characters in horror movies get so desperate they just jump through windows without a second thought. Sally does it twice, and there’s a similar scene in Hereditary. I'm not sure if there are other movies that make jumping through windows so intense that I haven't seen yet.

I think my favorite thing about this story is Leatherface just stressing about all the fucking people coming into his house.

Something interesting is that this movie is done like a comedy. It has a lot of humour but it ends up being a very dark weird humour that instead of making it less scary, it just made it way more disturbing.

Please also watch the sequel from 1986 it's hillarious one of the craziest acting by Dennis Hopper. The sequel is also by the same director but more crazy.

Great reaction. My favorite part was when I realized you didn't know Grampa was alive. I just sat there waiting for the moment he starts sucking her finger knowing how you were going to freak.

Is there literally no one who has ever watched a Semi take off from a complete stop? It's not a car, it takes quite a while to get up to speed and all the while you've got a huge lunatic right outside the window with a chainsaw, who can't cut through the door, but could easily smash the window. Everyone I've seen react to this always says that the truck driver is stupid. But, actually, he was smarter than everyone watching from the safety of their own homes. Sorry, I actually liked your reaction, but I couldn't hold this is for the 10th time or so. If he had tried to drive off, LeatherFace would have bashed through the window and had a hold of him before that truck had even reached 15 mph.

The practical effects, over the top screaming, crazy body movements, and that unsettling rumble of the chainsaw makes this movie both cheesy and terrifying. One of my favorites for sure and hopefully yours too 🖤

Fun fact: The two villains in The Silence of the Lambs, Norman Bates of Psycho, and this film, were all inspired/influenced by the same real life serial killer. That man's name is Ed Gein. His crimes are some truly disturbing stuff.
@2apocalypsex
@2apocalypsex 11 ай бұрын
The things Ed Gein did were indeed terrible, but he was also a victim, due to the way his overly religious mother raised him and his brother. Another thing is that even though he's labeled a serial killer, he actually only murdered two women. A serial killer is typically a person who murders three or more people, with the murders taking place over more than a month and including a significant period of time between them. However, while most authorities set a threshold of three murders, others extend it to four or lessen it to two .

Fun Fact: (You want to talk about a little disturbing) - That scene where they cut her finger? - They tried that shot repeatedly but they couldn't make it work (lOW BUDGET SPECIAL EFFECTS BACK IN '74) - So finally, the actress told them, "Just cut it" and they did. The cut finger and the blood in THAT scene was real.

The scariest part about this... The human furniture and all that stuff. It was inspired by a real life serial killer, Ed Gein. He's been an inspiration for MANY movies. This one, Psycho and The Silence of the Lambs.

The dinner scene is even more depressing when you know the fact the actors are really miserable when filming because of the heat and the stink of the meats rotting . So some of that is LEGIT real misery on their faces. The ending of this movie is definitely one of the best endings to a horror movie ever if not the best. Her in the truck laughing like a maniac... Leatherface anger dancing lol. Its perfect.

Id love for you guys to check out Eaten Alive. The actress that survived this movie is also in that one. X got more of its inspiration from Eaten Alive than Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Its also very CAMPY and lot more fun. If anyone watches the Housewives franchise, the little girl in Eaten Alive is Kyle Richards.
