I'm glad a video about this is being made. This game's very near to me and I've been playing it for more than 10 years at this point (more than half of my life), the worst thing about the community in my opinion is shunning new players, gatekeeping and toxicity, and it was never always like this. There were periods in the late 2000s/early 2010s where it would still kind of flawed, but it was mostly wholesome. Mind you, its still currently not ALL bad, and I know there are genuine and wholesome areas of the TF2 community that are filled with cool people, but there is also so much BS, and noise you have to filter out before you can find it.

I really wanted to come out about it and I had the evidence readily available. To my understanding, because my only connection was with that one friend (I was never directly involved with Mechawreck), it was known among a small community of people. My guess would be that the people directly involved, since he went after a lot of minors, wanted to keep in contact with him because he was a relatively big KZbinr in the TF2 scene at the time. As for why I didn't come out about it, I can't quite remember because it's been so long, but I think I wanted one of the actual victims to come out about it who could speak more confidently and concretely on the matter. I only kept in contact with that one person who did involve themselves with Mechawreck and had known other people who were also directly involved with him. They would naturally be much better equipped to talk about it than me. Darty came out about it probably not too long after I first got to hear about it though and we talked briefly afterwards.

This is why (in my opinion) some of the best developers are the ones disconnected from their community or only allow one path of communication that is auto moderated, I say this because my mentor was really disconnected. My mentor had me manage the communication platforms (e.g. discord) and relay the information/good ideas to him. My mentor has largely slowed developing and has moved on to our smaller project, while I've moved on to the main/big project as a developer, I've somewhat mimicked his behaviour in the sense of I still moderate/manage the communication platforms but only really talk to people to further their ideas or if I have a job for them (e.g. asset commission).
