Here you show how to create a proper isolation story. You take the horror element and make it minimalistic, barely show it, thus making it difficult to comprehend. And then you let simple human paranoia do the work. If there is a serious threat and it could be any of the characters that is responsible then they would turn on each other and the result would easily become quite grim. There is no need to go around slaughtering everyone, the humans do that by themselves.

The thing figures out how to get past the blood test? Thinks Linkara I'll have nightmares for weeks
@QwertyCaesar6 жыл бұрын
MrMuxix I actually have a pet theory that the blood test was a ruse. In the original story the thing is telepathic. My theory is that it used its telepathy to cause that reaction to buy time for the Wilford Brimley thing.
@aros00186 жыл бұрын
Funny enough, for as not good as the movie was, the test they used in the Thing prequel I thought was actually kind of clever. The Thing being unable to replicate dental fillings because they're not organic. It's nowhere near as good as the blood test, since it only rules out those with fillings, which I was fine with since the Norwegian base should have logically done better at surviving if they'd thought up the same test as Outpost 31. Point is, without the blood test, it would have been cool to see the other ways people would try to figure out who was infected, to various levels of success.

Ok, I just got a random thought. Childs blowing the hatch to "kill" the thing, but not even killing MacReady. What if Childs were infected, and this was an escape plan? Basically, the stated reason is a lie, but covers him as stupid/panicked/not thinking it through, in case this fails. I don't remember if this squares with the further sequel, but does it have to? As long as the South American bit wasn't planned when this was written, it could still have been the intent.
@kingofthegundam79748 жыл бұрын
Considering Childs was infected in Climate of Fear, that actually does make sense.
@DianaGohan9 жыл бұрын
Again stuff like this to me makes this the best storyline as you're not only developing Linkara but the rest of the cast. As not only would this lead to further Harvey Finevoice backstory down the road, but the fact that you actually have the characters bicker and argue with one another also shows their limitations and annoyances at one another and makes them feel more real. Harvey's temper being addressed, showing 90's Kid can think and actually do a decent job pointing out issues, Linksano actually backing up 90's kid on how you shouldn't throw the word idiot around etc. This is all good stuff that actually makes this feel in a weird sense more "real" then even other story line bits and I just like the idea of the extended cast having their own personalities and sometiems not being able to get along with everyone and that not just being played like a joke. I don't think anyone else who does the whole "I'm pretending to be other people" has really mastered that so good on you for doing so.
@DianaGohan7 жыл бұрын
Oh also SPOILER ALERT FOR THE MOST RECENT LINKARA STORYLINE The whole "maybe the entity isn't dead maybe it just switched bodies" and Harvey accusing Linkara of that some point... wow amazing he actually did call that nearly 5 years later. Actually, on the com getting wet, no. Let me explain, The mic on a 1mc is often disconnected until it is needed, until that time the connector is usually covered with a screw on cap. Now this might be different for subs, buuuut, most weatherdeck connectors are small metal (painted brass most times) boxes with waterproof seals due to obviously the fact that waves can and will crash over the deck. Now again i was a surface guy so my knowledge of the systems of a sub are limited, however the navy is pretty uniform in some basic systems so yeah that mic should be fine.

I was just skimming through various episodes in the course of getting back into AT4W after not watching for a while, and I noticed how in this episode the ending theme suddenly changes from an instrumental version of the opening theme to one of the runner-up candidates to be the AT4W opening theme in the first place (specifically the one showcased in the Top 15 worse moments of Countdown video), without any apparent explanation or acknowledgement. I'm happy about the change because I wished some of the runners-up had gotten more attention then they did (even though this one wasn't quite my favorite among those, that was probably the one featured in the ending to Secret Defenders #10; this one was probably my second favorite, though), but I'm curious: what was the reason behind the change? And should we expect the ending theme to ever change again in the future?

The first part of John Carpenter's, The Thing, gets a sequel comic, and prequel film, a video game and a planned mini series. Yet the other two films in the same trilogy don't get anything, but a cult status? Well "In the Mouth of Madness" doesn't a sequel.
@Merit23972 жыл бұрын
This is where I felt some the storyline segments really SHOULD have been called something other than "Gun and Sorcery", since the journey that Linkara went on was over and the villain had been defeated. This a NEW story, this is a new conflict, this feels like a new arc. I remember sometime back, he went over the movie Future Shock, and said that it should have been called "Paranoia". Well, that's what I feel THIS section should have been called. Still the story was intense and a decent send up to the Thing.
@AT4W2 жыл бұрын
To me, storylines are defined by the final villain (or at least the PRESUMED final villain as the story progresses). While there are mini-arcs like the Halloween ones that might have their own sub-names, all of the stuff with Linkara's journey is part of the arc leading up to a final confrontation with Jaeris over the magic gun. Admittedly, this also made more sense with the original plans - wherein Linkara would shed a lot of the other gadgets and weapons to back to mostly just using the magic gun while Jaeris would use more and more tech to try to combat Linkara.
