Great review! I did enjoy this novel for its intriguing concepts, but the sequels are where it starts to get really mind-bending.

You're right @bookspin, what an existential rollercoaster the whole trilogy is.

The thing I found most fascinating about this novel was the insight into the historical period in China in the 1960s. It also did a really great job of showing me what a novel written from a Chinese cultural perspective looks like, including not only the political landscape, but also many of the social interactions. I wasn’t blown away by the book, but I thought it was a good read. Keep up the amazing reviews! This is still my favorite KZbin channel!

Thank you vey much for the wonderful comment Thomas. I hope you continue enjoying what I bring to the booktube. That was one of the highlights for me too, it really gave me an insight into that era that I was not really aware of, and I felt it revealed the characters drivers and motivations when it came to their decisions. Nice one.

I thought this one was a bit over rated, but enjoyed it. The second volume is miles better. Haven't read the third one, yet.

Thanks Richard. Yeah, it's an interesting read, but the more I think about it, the more I'm comfortable with it sitting in the middle of the bunch where it's at the moment. Would you putter lower or higher than where it is now?

@@thesci-fished Personally, I'd put it a bit lower, because I really liked Moving Mars and I think it is below this one on your list.

Ohhh I was waiting for you to review this one! I liked it, the book kept me involved in its mystery throughout. It's extremely hard to translate from Chinese (and their entire literary style can be alien to westerns), but I think they did a good job. I only got a little disappointed at the end, when they "explain" the tech the aliens are using. I think it was too magicky. And it does feel introductory, as you say. I haven't read the other books in the series yet. ------- Quick aside: English is my second language, so I don't easily perceive some of the more subtle sound differences. Every time you say "welcome to shed" in your accent, I hear "welcome to the sh*t" and it instantly makes me smile. I think it's funny and relatable. After all, aren't we all in the sh*t anyway? 🤣 Really enjoy your content, keep it up.

hahahaa, thank you very much for that comment, it made me laugh. Keep listening closely, you never know, I may throw the occasional "welcome to the sh*t" just to have you something to laugh about. Thanks mate, and I'm glad you're enjoying the content.

Excellent commentary on 3BP. I read it last year and generally enjoyed it. And some parts were fantastic. However, I have not gone on to Dark Forest. Yet. Not sure why I haven't. Maybe something about the first book, parts of which felt a little like a slog. Would be nice to hear your take on Dark Forest. Thanks again!

Thanks Greg, I think I like the second book most of all. I'll take a reread some time this year and share my thoughts with you all. Thanks again.

I can't rank it as there are a number of Hugo winners I have not read but I thought it was more enjoyable than the usual critics rate it but less than the hype crew think. Right in the middle is probably about right!

@NevsBookChannel hi Nev, yeah, I've already read the sequels, definitively worth the read. I'll review them on the channel at some point in time.
