The ships have empty mount points for weapons and internal compartments, each having a point value assigned to it. Each fleet can have up to 3k points, and you can get to that point limit as you see fit when designing your fleet. In balanced teams, each player brings a specialized fleet that has a specific role in combat.

Fleets are pretty much entirely customizable, except for the physical appearance of the ships. You could have a ship designed only for point defense, and there are many different kinds of point defense options that all have their strengths and weaknesses. The 3k point thing is basically the standard for multiplayer games, you however can design your fleet without a consideration for the amount of points it costs, but players in multiplayer probably wont ready up if you try to bring it. The ships are enitrely customizable, but some ships fit specific roles better than other ships.
