This is a story I will never forget. On one of my ranch jobs, I made a bad decision and ended up regretting it. Lesson learned. Hear what happened in this video.

I remember vividly the day I rode my Morgan across a place that we had ridden many times before, but in this case he caught a hind leg on some barb wire that was hidden in the grass. God bless his soul, once he knew he was caught he stood there on three legs even though his forward momentum brought up about 15 feet of buried fence. He waited for me to free him. A horse that gives to pressure is a treasure.

An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure…cutting the barbed wire. Great story !

Well I was busting up laughing at part of your story, cuz I could just picture that whole heel ledge, barbed wire and moving fence, horse panicking scenario, but thought I was gonna be sick picturing and hearing in my mind that hoof by your head. Glad it wasn’t worse, which it could have been.

Oh Lordy!! I could see it happening!! Old wire, visible or hidden is a disaster waiting to happen. Have ridden past a bunch on old homesteads and out in the woods and never thought about cutting it , marking it but I reckon I’ll put the wire cutters back in my saddle bags. Used to carry them in case someone rode off a trail or if there was some on a creek/flooded area, now I made do some preproblem adjustments. You glad you weren’t hurt worse!!❤️😘

I take care of yearlins in the winter here in west Texas and if one gets out of hot wire you let it down and run across at a high rate of speed and you won’t get caught up.

Wow, you were lucky! My worst fall was on a group trecking ride. We got back to the stable, and were waiting by the locked gate to the yard, for the rest to catch up. There was a big pile of hay stacked near by, covered in black plastic. The wind picked up, and the horse I was on decided to freak out at the plastic. He whipped round, and in 3 strides tried to take the 5 bar metal gate, into the stable yard. Of course he did not make it, he hit it with his chest, and flipped, catapulting me (in jump position - I shut my eyes as I felt him ho up - I knew this was going to hurt), onto the concrete yard. He landed on his back just over the fence - I was laying on my front flat out, about 15 ft in front, expecting him to land on me... Time stretches when you are in those kinds of situations. I finally looked up and over my shoulder, he was trotting about the yard as if nothing had happened... my nose began to bleed, and I realized I was beginning to feel pain. I bust my nose, broke 2 ribs, blackened all my fingers, and dislocated my knee cap (my riding hat saved my face, and my breeches were snug enough the knee cap popped back into position, but not before tearing a tendon, and giving me a weather wise knee.) It was a month before I could ride again, as my leg was so swollen and sore. I was lucky too, it could have been SO much worse! But, horse riding, can be dangerous, it's part of the appeal, like fast cars, mountain climbing... etc. Glad you were ok, and recovered well. 😊😊

I had a wreck last last April , in one of my least favorite places to ride, an arena. I was on a big draft cross, and transitioning from a walk to a lope; however, instead of picking up the lope, he spooked at something and bolted straight for the fence. I wound up bending the top rail of the pipe fence with my chest. A CT scan showed a broken sternum and a mass in my left lung and on a lymph node next to my aorta, and that's how I found out I had cancer; guess, he kinda did me a. favor. . .

Yes, definitely a blessing (kind of) in disguise. Cancer sucks all the way around but at least the X-ray allowed them to discover it before it progressed further. I had a wagon accident resulting in broken sternum, collarbone, ribs, a few back vertebrae. Not fun but I’ll take that over the cancer I fight any day… God bless you and me both 💐🕊💝🙏🏼

Whoa! That is a hairy story! Really glad you survived. And I think cutting the barbed wire would be a good idea no matter what the horse is named.

Don't beat yourself up. Bandaid could've gotten caught on the barbed wire even doing a long trot with shoes that were TOO BIG for it.

Old timers use to lay those wire gates on the ground and ride over that loose wire all the time. I would just hold my breath

I'd think that the time and labor it would take to make a barbed wireless path would be less hassle & expense than hospital & insurance claims would cost , not to mention the personal integrity side of reducing risk of injury to humans and animals 🤔

Carson- do you have an answer for that? It's a question of mine too. Was the horse super good at something else? Could the ranch owner not afford another horse?

If this horse has a history why would they not fix his behavior issues??? Why continue putting people in danger? Like your life isn't worth it
