The time I fell into a hole...(first experiences using a white cane)

I’m going to start using a cane soon myself. I’m really hoping I don’t fall into anything. That’s pretty cool and funny how some people thought your cane was a pair of drumsticks.

Yes many people believe that they were drumsticks LOL and if you truly rely or cane you won’t fall into anything. In retrospect I should have stopped as soon as I thought that nothing was touching my king. What I did instead was try and look at why my cane wasn’t touching anything when I knew I couldn’t really see. It was me still trying to rely on my vision even though I didn’t have it anymore. I learn my lesson LOL

I did the same thing when I started using a cane. I was embarrassed about it and would fold it up and try to hide it when I felt like I could get around without it

Totally understand. I really like my orientation and mobility instructor because she understood my experience and she would tell me to use my cane when ever I felt comfortable and she understood that there were times where I didn’t really need it because I could do well with the vision I had so she was OK with me not using it. She did encourage me to use it more though but she didn’t force me to do so. But yes I really disliked using it the first few years.
