For many, this movie is what The Ultimates comics should have been: A modern version of the Avengers, but at the same time not ashamed of its roots. And as a movie, I have to say that even though it has several flaws, this movie and its sequel are still holding up pretty decently. A great start to the brief but legendary "Marvel Animated Features"

@@danielvaughn1947how is it stupid, it’s just a hammer in myth and it takes the god to wield it as he does for it become feared. what’s stupid is that the hammer is what makes the god in the comics. Maybe less so now but in the early days Thor had a time limit where he turns back into a human when separated from his hammer, and it’s stupid that the hammer arbitrarily picks people to be like yeah you get the same power as a marvel powerhouse, by lifting me up instead of just being a hammer that’s heavy. Like it is in the myth and it’s the fact that it’s being wielded by Thor that it’s feared by all.

It's a good Steve Rogers movie, but not a good Captain America movie. The whole World War II parts just don't feel as heavy as the characterization they gave to the protagonist. It's like the opposite of 'Wonder Woman', where the best parts were the World War I parts showing Wonder Woman and the weaker ones were of Princess Diana in Themiscyra. If they made the 'Captain America' war scenes like they did in 'Wonder Woman', with all the struggles people were facing at war, it would've been perfect.

I think something that doesn't get enough appreciating in this movie is how much it tries to have realistic stakes to everything and that is something that I only realize now as an adult. Captain America having insecurities as a leader makes him fail, but also better for having to deal with that responsability over his own needs. Iron Man having a secret identity hinders him, but also makes him better for having to stand all that criticism in silence. Thor going against his own father leaves him by himself, but also makes him better for having to hold his ground on what he believes. Ant-Man having struggles to follow orders makes him fail, but also makes him better for having to learn to work with others. And all of that is only the characters and their arcs. All of them are seen as superheroes, but deep down they're all just humans just like anyone else. They have flaws, they make mistakes, they get hurt, they suffer with their regrets, but they always choose to get back up and try again, even if that means sacrificing their lives to do what has to be done in order to do what's right. Seeing them being almost killed in such brutal ways really made me think about how this story could've easily ended up like an episode from 'The Boys'.

Note: In Earth 1610, the Super-Soldier serum plays an important role in the Ultimate Universe as many parties sought to recreate the serum that created Captain America. This resulted in the creation of the mutants, the spider that bit Peter Parker, the Osborne formula, the Hulk's creation, and Captain America's analogues in Europe. And the MCU tried to do something similar.

Agreed. However, there is no movie or shows that got Cap "fully" right but just some aspects of him. Like Ultimates is Cap with his compelling man out of time driven story, leadership or tactical skills, never say die attitude and superhuman physical abilities. EMH is Cap with his inspirational speeches, commanding presence and noble character. MCU Cap with his peerless fighting skills whether martial arts or otherwise. There are so many parts of what makes comic book Captain America great that is never adapted to its last drop in his mainstream incarnations. Ultimate Avengers is the closest however.

@@darn4285 💯 and something people don't realize, nor the Dr. Who(pun) created the SSS knew, was that just like Hulk who gets stronger when he gets angrier, Steve does so also to a lesser degree but based on WILL POWER not anger and it explains 90% of 'plot armor' seen in his tales. People go by his BASE stats of 800lbs overhead lift, but that was 40 years ago and he's grown physically since the 1950s when he had a more slim figure (looks 180lbs) and was very fast and strong back then. In the late 1980's onward he was 40-60lbs bigger. That's 40lbs+ of SSS muscle, not regular muscles. His bones are denser, overall everything is enhanced and in SYNERGY, but most people think he's just on Super Steroids and just 'Strong'. Cap man handled Iron Fist with only BASIC fighting moves, as narrated straight from Danny's thoughts. Yet I see people putting IF and others, above Cap on H2H fighting lists.smh.

One thing about Hank beating up Janet in the comics: that happened only once and Hank was not in his right mind at the time. That element, as you mentioned, got exploded by Mark Miller in the Ultimates making it an extremely abusive relationship, which retroactively corrupted an otherwise pretty wholesome relationship. Hank Pym was not an abusive asshole.

@@sonictennyson2201 616-Hank did one very wrong thing, one vile thing (in his marriage, obviously there's Ultron) but 1610-Hank was like the result of that old whisper game where the info gets corrupted down the line. 616-Hank was kicked to the curb by Jan and the team for his action, which he was not in his right mind when he did, but he still did it. It gets mixed up with 1610, where not only is Hank indeed a vile abuser, but Jan takes him back more than once. 616 Jan had agency. Right after she showed Hank the door, she served a long stint as Team Chair. Jan-1610 died literally one of the most ignominious deaths ever. But don't anyone mix up the very troubled 616 versions with the grimdark edgelord fest that is the 1610 couple.

11:29 - 12:23 If there's ever a time when I feel bad for the Avengers, it's whenever they have to try to fight the Hulk. Because you know that at best, they're about to get their asses beat really badly, and at worst, some of them are about to lose their lives.

Watched the animated as a young teenager, and my god I loved the voice acting. Especially when hulk punches Hank’s knee out, it felt so visceral. Even Cap’s tired attempts to calm down the Hulk. Hell, even the Hulk was amazing! I came back to watching this not too long ago because the scenes and voice acting are still in my head, I had to rewatch.

This movie was definitely what The Ultimates should have been, considering they're much closer to the original Avengers rather than the blatant super soldiers we got in the Ultimate Universe. Of course, a big reason why The Ultimates was the way it was had been the result of a post-9/11 media landscape, in which it was largely Mark Millar critiquing President Bush's foreign policy without explicitly bringing up things like Iraq and Afghanistan or things like that. Unsurprisingly, those comics did NOT age well, this movie aged much better than they did, and now we have a better version of even THIS with the 2012 movie.

this is why I think that captain america's first movie should have started with him freezing over, and have the rest of the movie be a citizen kane style exploration of past events. where he trudges through his memories and tries to understand the innumerable changes between his time and modern day.

Oh my god, 616 Hank didn’t “beat the shit out of Janet”. It was a misinterpretation of the intended scene on the artist’s part and it was the only time he ever “beat” her. It’s not like he abused her on a daily basis.

Even tho it's bad aspects (racist Cap, evil Hulk, evil Ant-Man, and antiquated trends and unnecessary violence) prevent me from putting the Ultimates on my very top favorite Avengers comics, cuz the mainstream OG marvel avengers comics are the ones I like to read the most, the Ultimates are in my 2nd top for it's good parts: the parts revealing the hidden hearts under their jerkishness, the character development they grow most of them, the action, the atmosphere, the modern take helping the Avengers franchise back into sales, and finally the Ultimates comics 1 and 2 did help inspire the MCU (along with the animated movies).

If Norton wanted the hulk to be the secret main villain in the avengers then it could’ve been pulled off perfectly tbh and so to prove how strong and uncontrollable he is as an asset. Hell that would even warrant them at least to give us a planet hulk movie. I genuinely think the mcu failed directly after avengers age of ultron simply for not doing more with what they had

@@monster-mecha_enthusiast_2002 that's what I've been saying too! The last thing that truly felt like Marvel was the Avengers: Earth's mightiest heroes show. We aren't getting anymore unique and interesting takes on Marvel like these old shows/movies. I've been buying all the old marvel shows/movies on dvd.

The NAliens make sense to me, ever since the comics started unconsciously and consciously they became the new gilgamesh, and a new pantheon, a new "religion", they always have philosophical, biblical, mythological and psychedelic stuff hidden… it’s like a tv show using a common scientific theory that could explain sci fi irl < some media uses theories sometimes. We know about Adie’s interest in certain spear, this has led the constantine movie to say that it’s what had adie in power, if you’re into the whole uap/ufo scene then this completely makes sense as there was theories of the N… in power of alien tech and that maybe they could’ve won etcetera.

Yes, the avengers movies aren't original, the 2 animated movies were the actual blue print. They came out in 2006. But to be honest, it's also annoying how the movies de powered cap. In the 2006 anime movie, the guy flipped a tank to use it's guns like a normal human flipping a book. No effort. And I like how he threw around all those soldiers the moment he woke up from ice, in the movie it was only 2 guys and in the anime he threw around at least 10 guys shooting at him and had no shield
