I worked in a major hospital and noticed admitting more than coincidental cluster (breast cancer) from 1 particular street- Mathoura Rd in Toorak. No one would have believed me as I was ‘just a lowly clerk’. …But as a gardener I wondered from effects of soil toxicity- what had been manufactured in that locale in early days of settling a city, before ‘gentrification’ set in. Thanks Malcolm for making me feel sane…..and my darling friend Hazel, who I got to know over her visits- that’s for you Mrs Stahmer- a true lady. R.I.P.

What I enjoy the most about Malcolm's works is this: He studies human behavior, without forcing opinions into accepting any kind of idea about humanity. His work is about EVOLUTION through observing humanity and the resulting pathways that follow. His work has NOTHING to do with liberal policies or conservative policies, let alone a definition as to WHY things work the way they have and will do for the future. His works simply explore humanity as " existing " in the different times on this planet, and the results of those pathways. Quality stuff.

Always enjoy the journey w/MG. I'm clearing space on the wall to chart the course - tacks & stickies at hand!

It's so wonderful that there's a commitment to evidence and empirical case studies, paired with the adventurous, meandering style of a road trip without GPS. This book is on my short list

Why is it that so many TV, radio, and print personalities use "African American" to describe one group of people but "white" to describe another? Why one group is afforded the dignity to be defined by their geographical origin but the other by their skin color? If one group is African Americans, wouldn't that be appropriate to define the other group as European Americans? Better yet, why aren't we all just Americans?
@garyjaffe9845Ай бұрын
You had me until "better yet". Distinguishing people by traits is important for many reasons. You cannot solve discrimination by ignoring the labels. As for European American, I think that's perfectly acceptable, and everyone would understand what you meant

Whoopi Goldberg, during an interview, was asked, did she prefer the term "black" or "african-american". She replied "I am an american". I thought her answer was brilliant.

also, we're all ultimately African- something.

Malcolm Gladwell has two black ancestors, one Jamaican and another from the Igbo tribe I appreciate that authors choose different ways to describe the world and that some of us don't have rules on what words should be used.

Mr Morgan Freeman would totally agree with you in the same way he takes exception to having African History Month. Every citizen of the USA is an American first. Hopefully we will be able to describe people other than by skin colour unless absolutely necessary.

Unpopular opinion. Non Conformity is a myth. The Non Conformist just conforms differently. Doctoring is stressful. It's life and death. It's also day in and day out. There is safety and security in the unanimity of those informed enough to have an opinion, so it does not lend itself to some one saying "Why so many tonsillectomies?" And the answer might well be "You like making a salary, right?"
