While I may not disagree with everything you said, let's keep things in perspective. Would more light be better in a number of circumstances? Sure. However, we cannot expect a light to be bright enough to solve all problems either. Sometimes when I experiment clearing indoors, a 1000 lumen light bouncing on things in front of me, or even bouncing off objects I want to see glares too much at times, especially considering that these are types that only has one brightness settings and usually used in situation not calm enough to fiddle wiht brightness settings. I started with an X200, and then switched to X300 soon after it came out. TLR7 has multiple times output compared to those. Sure, X300 Ultra might be twice as bright and even more intense in candela. However, these things tend to keep leap frog. I say there is a fat chance that TLR7 is brighter than about half of X300 models currently on law enforcement officer's guns which those officers purchased many years ago. Not every cops go buy the latest and greatest, and it is not like an old model X300 with not even 200 lumes is better for no other reason that it is a Surefire. But, I don't see anyone urging cops to replace the old X300. Okay, maybe you might. And, it is not always about brightness. I find it not practical to flip down the bad flip up-down switch design of the X300 if I need to shoot one haded with any reasonable degree of ease. While I do appreciate Surefire's reliability and toughness, ergonomic or other area wise, it is a company that is pathetic in terms of innovation. I am not even talking about something mindblowing. Even in simple things like a better switch design, there is very little improvement in anything from them.

The TLR-1 HL is noticeably shorter than the X300. The x300ultra and tlr-1HL are very close in performance, with the x300ultra maybe being a touch better. The x300turbo has crazy high candela, but you sacrifice a lot of flood to get it.

As a civilian, my question to an officer or anyone using a light for duty purposes would be, shouldn’t you not be using this light in some of the ways you mentioned. Such as in a nighttime traffic stop. Because then you just pointed your firearm at a potentially innocent person. Shouldn’t the gun only be aimed at someone when a real threat is posed. Therefore a regular flashlight in an opposing hand is the proper method? Asking this question honestly. Not sure what the proper legal use of a weapon light is in these instances

I tried using it for a while for my edc, and wasn’t too much of a fan. I had previously used the TLR6 on my Shield for a few years so I was initially really stoked about going from about 100 lumens to 500. However, I live in relatively urban area and ambient light was really making me feel uneasy about it’s performance. I sold my shield for a mid frame and upgraded to carrying a TLR1. I still have the 7, however I’m keeping it on my home defense gun where most likely it’ll be used in low light and if there is an engagement, it won’t be beyond 10 yards.

There is also a trend toward coupling the smaller lights with duty holsters that have a more compact opening. Sig and Aliengear just released a new duty holster that specifies the use of the TLR7/Foxtrot2. It prevents access to the trigger while holstered. I believe Safariland has done the same thing with their new SafariVault holster. That doesn’t negate the deficiencies of the smaller lights, but it’s a trend based on a perceived need, not cosmetics.
@ja0298

@@ja0298 at least on the Sig/Aliengear partnership, it is, in part, an attempt to restrict access to the trigger while the gun is holstered. @@rackpull772they make a TLR9 which uses the same switches as the TLR7 but is a full size 1000lm light. Unsure if there has been a proper vetting/review of that light out there, never really hear much about it.

My agency issues the Nighstick copy of the TLR-7 and it is not enough light output. This wouldn’t be such an issue if our holsters weren’t only compatible with TLR-7 footprint lights. Wider weapon lights like the TLR-1 or X300 will not fit. I had to buy a TLR-9 for better output, but it is still nothing compared to an X300.

The TLR7 or the TLR7A? I love the switches on the 7A. Never used the 7 but I wouldn’t have bought the 7 just on the way the switches operate. I think the 7A switches are better than the x300 and the TLR1-HL

Honest assessment. I carry a pistol with a TLR-7A. It's an excellent light for it's size, but the lights on my larger non-conceal carry pistols are SureFire X300s. For what it's worth, I have drop tested the TLR-7A on concrete. It passed.

For light-bearing, I run x300u-b. For non-lightbearing, I run slick. My lightbearing are for hours of limited visibility potentia/ walking the GSD. While the others are for the rest.always have a secondary light for admin, but it makes no sense to me not to have at least a secondary light source,

My rule: The bigger the gun, the bigger the light. PS. The TLR7 does appear to have diffuser over the LED. If you look at it side by side with a TLR1 you can see what I am talking about. I would be very curious how the light would behave without that. As for CCW purposes, the light is there for more than one reason. Yes it provides you with light to see a target, but it also serves as a way of preventing your pistol from being pressed out of battery. Now when you bump up to the compact 4" pistol you need to consider a TLR1 or TLR1 HL as the TLR7 isn't going to jut out enough. Just a little food for thought. Of course there are pros and cons to everything. If you like the handheld only life then more power to you. At the end of the day it's up to the individual to decide why they want to incorporate somwthing into their system.

It’s not a diffuser, it’s part of the TIR collimating array. The thing you see covering the led is actually to redirect stray light from the led back down to the main reflector.

Finally a person with some sense; I’ll never understand seeing dudes with tlr7s on glock 17/19 sized guns. 4” and above gets an x300 or tlr1, or modlite if you swing that way.
