At long last the Tomatoes are in the Polytunnel!! In this episode I talk through the varieties that made it (slug warfare survivors) and who's going where in the newly covered polytunnel.

💚💚💚I make labels from empty beer cans. I cut off the top and bottom, and cut the rest into strips. Then with a pencil or pen with an empty lead, I press the name of the variety. It will never be erased. And this strip can be attached to a tomato rope, like would be winding it. To press through well, you can put the strip on a notebook. Then the effect will be better.💚💚💚

Your outside tomatoes have SUCH a charming location, what with those pretty calendulas standing by in rows like well-behaved staff ready to draw bees and confuse marauders. So beautiful! I just love everything you do on your plot, each year is so different and somehow better than the last!

I’m fascinated by the way tomatoes are grown in the UK, especially the pruning to one main stem with little extra. I’d love to be able to protect them from pests and disease but they would last about two days in the TX heat in a greenhouse. But then, I’ve already processed 36 pints of Sloppy Joe / BBQ sauce and 15 quarts of spaghetti sauce from I think ten plants. They’re about done now but will hopefully rebound in Sept. Loved your take on all the varieties and look forward to seeing how they do.

Looking forward to watching your tomatoes take off this year. Wish I could send you some of our heat wave so we could both average out. It's currently 99F (37C) but supposed to get to 103 (39). That's too warm for me and it's been like this for a week. But, I did get my first ripe sun gold today so someone likes the heat. :)

Ooo, I feel inspired to do a lot more tomato varieties next year Jess. A friend gave me an apricot tree he grew from his own stone. It lived years and I never looked after it well. It fruited and gave delicious juicy apricots but I neglected it badly and it died. Might be worth a try.

I hate to say it, but I`m hauling in the most delicious Tommies right now. I also grow Atomic fusion and I can tell you this so far : It`s a super weedy plant, lots and lots of fruit on it. The bigest ones are like Pears. Not very high but rather wide, bushy. Was not able to tame the plant, bcause it decided to explode out of the ground with three stems. :) To stop bragging....you inspired me to grow more brassicas. Wich I cannot. I am surrounded by agriculture and they grow a lot of Canola (?) wich is in the brassica fam. Which means my humble plantings of every f****ing type of brassica is destroyed the moment it sits in the bed outdoors. And its not cabbage white. Its a plethora of bugs and pests. I am at the end of my latin, as we say in german language. So cheers to you Jessie and your normally beautifull Brassicas.

I adore your polytunnel! I especially like that it’s not a hoop shape and has raised, inground beds 🤩 I have installed a green house this year, but have serious space envy. Trailing winter squashes in a smallish green house is a less than great idea… learnt the hard way this summer. Especially after filling it with tomatoes and peppers before getting the great idea to try winter squash in a cold climate. Greetings from my Norwagian squash-jungle 😂

I don't know if you can buy Kiepenkerl Indigo Pear Drops cherry tomato in the UK but if you can I highly recommend it. It's sweet like Sungold but it's not F1. So you can harvest seeds or let self seed in polytunnel. Idigo has small tomatoes, brown on top, and yellow blush on the bottom. Grow high and profound.

Mine got slugged and as I had planned space for one outdoors, I was pleased that I ordered a grafted one as a back up. The company emailed me to say it would be delayed until September 2025! 😂 I have 2 buffalo sun now instead, as like you I only want to grow blight resistant outdoors. Just need a bit more sunshine now! X

Hello Jessie, really fun tomato today. I often watch folks that name any of the varieties that they grow for peppers tomatoes pretty much anything that I like. I listen for the names and I look them up to see if I can find seeds for them. After growing them, I will keep growing the ones I like and the ones I don’t like most likely never again. So they’re quite a few things in my garden that have come directly from you as well as other folks. I was grateful that you take your time to give us the names and tell us some of their interesting characteristics whether it be color flavor or taste. This year I’m focusing on tomatoes strictly for canning. I think I have about 30 Roma tomato plants so I’m looking forward to an awful lot of tomato sauce. Good luck with your tomatoes. I’ll have a good time watching them. Thank you for the video today. I will.Cya next thyme. Steven

Everything looks lovely! Well done! The end of my garden is all of a sudden killing all the plants. It’s so confusing. We even dug the soil out by 30cm deep and replaced it with fresh but our healthy, robust plants we bought and popped in curled up and died. We are at a loss of what to do. For this year we are just keeping it empty.

I loved the taste of Rebel Starfighter Prime but the yield wasn't amazing -- will be interesting to see how you get on. Prairie Fire is doing really well for me now -- large for a plum cherry -- and is definitely tasty (planted out into the greenhouse in early April). I should really grow Black Krim again -- I did grow it in my back garden one year and it was excellent but the slugs had an absolute field day with it, but I could probably manage to keep them in check in the greenhouse. I think apricots are largely self-fertile so you might have some luck saving seed, though of course the disease issues would continue to be concerning.

Regarding tomato planting depth I was recently wondering whether planting too deep could be detrimental to root growth because deeper down there is less oxygen which the roots need. I guess it depends on your soil/compost make up though. This year I am planting a lot of tomatoes into bottomless buckets so the plant isn't that deep below soil level but I half fill the bucket with compost so there's loads of stem covered up to allow roots to grow. The bucket also helps with watering as it ensures the root ball is always covered without run off.
