I believe Martin Coogan (Steve's brother) of the Mock Turtles (Can You Dig It?) helped write all the Tony Ferrino tracks. The live DVD 'Steve Coogan: The Man Who Thinks He Is It' features a couple of great TF songs; 'Lapdancing Lady' and 'Ordinary Girl' - well worth a look. Thanks for posting!

Comedy today just doesn't cut the mustard... Coogan and Chris Morris set a benchmark yet to be raised in my eyes.

This is a cameo of a 80's Portuguese actor and comic artist Herman Jose. Coogan inspired himself in two of Herman's characters: Tony Silva (a cheesy spanish singer) e Serafim Saudade (a cheesy portuguese singer). You'll find this two characters on youtube if you care to see.

I miss dance troupes on TV shows. 'Specially when they sing lines like, _"Soon he'll be comin' on to share his phenomenon."_

I miss the plastic clothes of the late 90's. They looked so cool when I was growing up. They still look so cool, although I bet they were super sticky to wear- never had the "pleasure."

I admire Coogan's effort levels in trying to get the best out of this character in the 90s, but it never fully worked for me. It struggled to get beyond a simple caricature, which may have been fine as a bit-part figure in a sketch show, but wasn't really suited to filling the Partridge-style 'big comedy character' they were hoping for. Ferrino got dropped pretty quickly by Coogan & Co. and never reappeared.

Coogan is very funny, but he nicked the entire idea from the late great Andy Kaufman and his alter ego, Tony Clifton. Check out the original to see how a true 'singing superstar' should behave!

I think this character failed because of the way it was foisted on a cynical nation. It was "here's the latest genius character from genius Coogan".The nation responded quite correctly with "yeah, right". It also probably didn't help that Tony's womanising image pretty much matched Coogan's at the time.I think the first series of I'm Alan Partridge came after this. Coogan is definitely best at lampooning Brits.

@@dinkaDPB We are still watching it because it's Steve Coogan! Clare is right - this character did not take off. Watching it now, I'm baffled Coogan thought it would. It's a very good point - this is lampooning the sexual excesses of celebrities, and SC himself was one of the worst offenders at this time. Who could forget the News of the World scoops on him, like their 'sex with a hooker on a bed covered with cash' exclusive JURASSIC PARK!

Huge Coogan fan, but this is really poor material in comparison to Partridge and Saxondale. Hadn't watched it since the 90s, and now it just looks weak writing stretched over an unfunny one dimensional character....
