I actually bought the kind of pvc pipes that are used for sewer systems, as they cost a fraction of the tunnels you can buy. Also, I replaced wodden bridges and ladders with branches from a pear tree we took down recently, in different sizes. And I make foraging toys out of toiletpaper rolls, rat safe tissue paper and left over fleece. And ropes I braid myself from fleece leftovers aswell, inspired by Ems ropes in the mice cage. Just to give a few budget friendly alternatives. In my country, accesories for rats are insanely expensive, and I have a low income.. So gotta be creative ;)

Also a great option for hanging tunnels: use the legs from old pairs of pants (especially if you have kids who stained or grew out of their clothes). They make inexpensive, natural tunnels you can hang with large safety pins or shower curtain rings. Decorating a cage and making it fun doesn’t have to be expensive!

I sew my own rat hammocks and one of the ones I made was a combination of a few of these items. It's a tunnel hammock and it's fairly long with a flat top, so it works as a bridge too. As for tunnels, another option is 2.5 inch or 3 inch diameter PVC pipe. It doesn't crinkle, but they're sturdy enough to survive a lot of chewing. I have a T-shaped one in each of my rats' cages that I bury partway in their bedding.

Hi! (: I wanted to ask what you think about these stand perches, these sticks you can put on bars (for birds), just like the lava ledges, but these are of course more narrow but seem to have a similar texture on them. I only ask because lava ledges are not very cheap, and these are less than half its price. What do you think could the rats use these as well for climbing? Or is it too narrow for them?

I have a kind of parrot rope for my ratcage, but it's a bit wobbly and my rats don't like using it at all. They don't sell lava ledges here. I do use those brown aquarium rocks for in the litter trays. They sit on it and do their pooing then. For cheap litter trays I can recommend kitchen drawer divider trays. They come in various sizes (Curver brand) and you can cut one or two sides off with for instance strong pliers or a bread knife. And they're a lot cheaper than £10 shop litter trays for rats. They also don't have any good foraging toys here. I know I can make some with toilet rolls or something. Or use that treat ball thing with the tiny carrots on it. But that's a bit of work for the rats to get their daily ration of food out of. I do do some scatter feeding on top of their various flower pots and on top of their wooden cabin. You maybe forgot one toy item. Strips of kitchen paper towels 😉 Oh yeah, and cheap kitchen baskets with strips of paper in it, attached to the side of the cage.

Hammocks don’t have to be fancy, since rats chew them anyway. Old bedding or clothing can make great hammocks, and pillowcases or pillow shams have the benefit of being both large and already having a pouch to hide in. Just poke holes in the corners, put in some shower clips and you’re set! Also instead of lava ledges, I use rough bricks under their bottles and they work great to trim the nails. These are all great items, but the rats don’t care if things are store bought - they love nesting in cardboard boxes with torn up tissues as much as fancy, expensive items.

@Emiology5 жыл бұрын
Rats shouldn’t have collars because it’s dangerous for their necks. If you really can’t tell them apart from size etc you can use a bit of coloured food dye on their tail or on their back but you’d have to make sure they’re not overly grooming it off and you’d have to reapply it occasionally, it’s a method ive seen used with lab rats before.

You can but it’s a risky surgery to put them through just for you. A lot of Male rats are also playful and not cuddly so if you want a mix of both you might end up with that. Also you would need 4 rats minimum to do this, as you can’t have both the Male and female alone until they’re old enough to be spayed / neutered so you’d need two males and two females.
