Don't be surprised - on most Cruise ship buffets you will find Tilapia fish - as much as you like.The problem is - they taste good and unless you know the story behind it - you would never suspect an issue.
@thebalancedhealthchannel19 сағат бұрын
You're so right, Bernhard! Tilapia is a common choice at buffets because of its mild flavor and affordability, but knowing its sourcing and farming conditions is so important. Thanks for highlighting this-it’s a great reminder to be mindful of what’s on our plates, even on vacation! 🛳🐟

I thought so ive read online tilapia is not so good for you especially farm raised?
@thebalancedhealthchannel7 ай бұрын
Yes, there has been some controversy regarding tilapia, particularly farm-raised tilapia, due to concerns about its nutritional profile and farming practices. Here are the key points to consider: Concerns about Farm-Raised Tilapia Omega-3 and Omega-6 Balance: Low Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Tilapia generally has lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids compared to other fatty fish like salmon. High Omega-6 Fatty Acids: Some studies suggest that farm-raised tilapia can have a higher ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids, which may contribute to inflammation if consumed in excess relative to omega-3s. Farming Practices: Diet and Feed: Farm-raised tilapia are often fed a diet that includes corn and soy, which can affect the nutritional content of the fish. Use of Antibiotics and Chemicals: There are concerns about the use of antibiotics and other chemicals in some tilapia farming operations to prevent disease and promote growth. These practices can potentially lead to antibiotic resistance and contamination. Environmental Impact: Waste and Pollution: Poorly managed fish farms can contribute to water pollution due to waste and the use of chemicals. Escape of Non-Native Species: Farmed tilapia can escape into local waterways and disrupt local ecosystems. Nutritional Benefits Despite these concerns, tilapia does have some nutritional benefits: High in Protein: Tilapia is a good source of lean protein, which is essential for muscle growth and repair. Low in Calories and Fat: Tilapia is relatively low in calories and fat, making it a good option for those looking to maintain a healthy weight. Choosing Healthier Alternatives If you're concerned about the potential downsides of farm-raised tilapia, consider these alternatives: Wild-Caught Fish: Look for wild-caught fish, which typically have a more favorable omega-3 to omega-6 ratio. Examples include wild-caught salmon, sardines, mackerel, and herring. Other Sustainable Seafood: Consider other sustainable seafood options such as trout, arctic char, and wild-caught cod. Farmed Fish from Reputable Sources: If you choose farmed fish, look for those from reputable sources that follow sustainable and healthy farming practices. Certifications like the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) or the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) can help identify responsibly farmed seafood.

I'm not fond of salmon. I'll eat sardines. I'd love to get fresh ones. I like mussels. Never think of shark. Don't care about tuna. Don't like tilapia. So why aren't they raised better? Now. I love: Bluegill. Trout. Catfish. Carp, All other panfish. 90% of the fish I eat are caught by me.

But, I have read about the risks from eating Sardines by the elderly people, because Sardines contain high Purine content (causing elevation of uric acid levels) and high sodium content, causing Hypertension and heart disease.

@thebalancedhealthchannel19 сағат бұрын
Great observation! Sardines are nutrient powerhouses but can be tricky for some, especially due to purines and sodium. If you’re managing conditions like gout or hypertension, portion control and choosing options like low-sodium varieties packed in water or olive oil can help. Always best to consult with a doctor for personalized advice. Thanks for bringing up this important topic! 🐟💡

Smelt are indeed delicious, Sandra! While they're a great source of omega-3s and protein, overfishing is a real concern, especially in ecosystems like the Great Lakes. It's so important to support sustainable seafood practices to keep these species around for future generations. Thanks for bringing this up! 🌊🐟
