Cross border political issues and a relatively powerful car industry lobby in Malaysia. Malaysia assembles a lot of cars domestically and has local car companies PROTON and Perodua. Very interesting video! For sure geography plays a role, but so do politics. All of those destinations are between countries with long standing historical and economic ties, but that don't necessarily have a friendly relationship. Road or rail alternatives then suffer from excessive and unpleasant border crossing, that is notoriously easier at the airport. Besides, you expect a long process at the airport anyways, and it's in general more reliable than on land borders. So when the option is open, you will want to take the plane. Similarly close cities in Europe (Paris, London, Brussels, Barcelona, Milan) all can be reached with trains just as easily, don't require any border crossing (except London) and enjoy a greener approach to travelling, hence the lower amount of flight passengers.

HKG - TPE is also for stopover flights to the USA or Japan. A bit cheaper than flying direct. CX routinely schedule their widebodies to fly this route immediately after a long haul flight. So for a short flight there are actually flat bed first class seats available.

part of it is international connections. Easier to connect via a foreign airport (Korea being the only closest option near Japan) vs make a connection involving an international & domestic flight. Same way how connecting in Vancouver is better between Asia & the US if there is no direct option.
