I've bought a Z900RS as my first bike last summer and I absolutely love it! The power is there when you want it, but it can be relatively tame if you keep it low in the rev range. It's very comfortable too, I think the width really helps with being able to have your legs at a natural angle. And of course the styling is superb. Every time I get off the bike I find myself admiring it, it still has the same wow factor it did when I bought it.

I owned a 2020 Z900RS and absolutely loved it. Such a good all-round bike. I sold it when I moved back to the uk and eventually bought a Speed Twin 1200. The Triumph is a great bike, but man, I still miss my Z900. I expect I will trade the Triumph for a Z Cafe at some point. Kawasaki really know how to make a good motorcycle.

I've owned a '19 Z900RS Cafe for last 5 years now and I agree with all of your points. I've used 89 octane once when it was all I could find, that was 2 years ago and no issues. Out of the 10 bikes I've owned it's the best non-sport bike I've ridden, so far. I wish it had self-cancelling turn signals along with LED signals too and the stalks on my signals cracked leaving them hanging by the wires. Nothing to be very concerned about because that issue has been addressed by Kawasaki now, I'm sure. You've done a great video review on this bike from an owner's position.

One thing that stuck with me the minute I swung a leg over was the cluster. I started on a Vulcan 750 twenty years ago and looking down at that cluster brought me right back. It's so similar. The DNA of their bikes of old is there but with modern sensibilities and it feels like they batted 100 on this one. After a flash, Leo Vince exhaust, a tail tidy and I switched out the side emblems to Z948RS it's pretty much done. You ever catch yourself just staring at it? The look back factor is insane on these. That black and gold is gorgeous. Have a pic of mine on my avatar next to my Honda Fury.

Hey thanks for watching! I know what you mean. The rider view is perfect from the dials to the arc of the fairing. Agree with you on the looks. It's sharp, stylish, retro but understated. My Cafe is two yrs old and I have only two gripes: the 'twitchy' throttle and the seat height. For the throttle, I swapped out the throttle tube and that helped some, only some, and yes, that throttle make slow speed maneuvers more challenging. For the seat height, am 5'6, I had the dealer installed a Brock's lowering kit when I bought it, but I would say am in the minority when it comes to that gripe. My other bike is a 1998 Buell S1 and the Cafe takes more efforts to maneuver compares to the S1. On the technology side, going from the S1 to the Cafe is like the P-51 to the F-16. Overall, and excellent review of the Cafe and I agree with you that the Cafe is a complete motorcycle. I will be keeping my Cafe until I cannot ride anymore.

I've got the same ('23?) bike that I bought off the showroom floor last January. So about 20-21 months. Absolutely love it. I'm so bonded with it. Usually don't even use the clutch when I upshift and it clicks like butter. Pretty much stock. Only things I've done is a tail tidy and led turn signals. Lots of adjusting the handlebars to find that perfect 'sweet spot'. The side benefit was the way the mirrors sit now. They're lower and I don't feel any desire to change them - not that I did in the first place. And then just some sliders and a radiator guard. Can't think of anything else I'd want to do. Oh, forgot, I'll probably do the tune one of these days. I'm in no hurry though. Oh, and got rid of the government reflectors to clean it up. :)

Test rode one before buying an R12 NineT. I loved the looks, but on close inspection, areas seemed a little unfinished, the radiator sticks out, and overall the quality was not up to the BMW. The engine was super smooth but lacks any character at all. Picked up an ex demonstrator BMW for the same price as a new Z900RS, and it has fully adjustable front and rear suspension, 6 gears, cruise control, heated grips, quick shifter, phone/nav integration etc, and for me has way more character. I also love the shaft drive. I wanted to like the Kawasaki, but back to back riding there was no comparison. I have to be honest and say that I have just sold a GS, so maybe its a boxer engine thing, but before buying that I rode one of the Versys models, and again no character and parts of it looked unfinished. But hey, that's the great thing about bikes, there is one to suit everybody.
@bertsbike

Thanks for the reply! Congrats on the R12. Those seem to be killer bikes! I own a boxer BMW as well. The R18. Beautiful Machine. Has Character, presence and all the buzzwords. Al-tho the fit/finish is excellent, I've already had to exercise the warranty due to a failure that left me stranded 400miles from home at only 1500miles. The Kawi has not had one single hiccup. Fit/finish at least on mine was pretty much perfect, but I admit it's not as neat and as purposeful and deliberate as my BMW. The R12 looks like the middle ground (size wise) between the 9T and 18. Very good looking bike! The Z900 Cafe' is more of a niche' bike IMO. It's the only Japanese bike here in the U.S. that I can think of that gives you all the modern performance with the retro look. But although Japanese bikes are very well built they don't seem to use as robust components. My R18 is a substantial machine. One of the reasons why I love the Z900/R18 is there's minimal tech. I love analogue or at least analog-ish bikes.

As a new rider looking to get my first bike, I lusted over the Z900RS, but there was no way I could purchase it, both for safety reasons (too powerful) and insurance rates. I eventually purchased a 2023 W800 as my first bike and 3 months later (7000km), I can say it was the right choice. It is a true modern retro. As I get more experience I may revisit the Z900RS, it still grabs my eye every time I walk into a dealership, it’s a beautiful bike! One things for certain, I won’t be getting rid of my W800.

The snatchy throttle is my biggest complaint in terms of rideability. For me it's more intrusive with more aggressive riding. The way it brings fuel back after engine braking upsets the bike in a corner. I feel more confident on my 1989 Katana 750 than my 2023 RS SE, despite the far superior brakes and suspension of the latter. The thing I don't like about the cosmetics is how soft the clearcoat is. I'm planning to do some paint correction and ceramic coating.

Ceramic is overrated IMO. Been down that road, not wasting my $$. Paint quality is as good, if not the best of any paint I've ever had - including cars. After enough spray wax, spray detail, all I need to do is a quick hand wax/polish using my all-time favorite wax. Oddly, it's nothing exotic, and trust me, I've gone way, way down the rabbit hole with expensive EVERYTHING. For whatever reason, out of ALL of them, a kind of plain jane Meguiers NXT liquid wax has been the best (always comes off easy too). Got rid of all the spidering on mine. We have very hard water that's terrible for paint. Unless I get a deionization machine, it's just the reality. I've overcome the snatchy throttle by finesse. But, yes, best to flash it, for many reasons.

I started on a Honda CTX700, and, after 1.5 years and 14k miles, I bumped up to the non-cafe Orange and Brown 2018 z900rs. What can I say? I wanted more power and sound! I now have over 35k miles on the z900rs, with no major problems, only regular maintenance performed. In fact, I haven’t even had to replace the chain yet! This could be due to the fact that I ride mostly back roads in a very clean and dry San Diego, or I just ride like a little, old man 🏍️ 😎 This bike is a keeper IMO. It can do almost anything, except off road. It’s light, nimble and comfortable. You can ride chill downtown or have a blast in the twisties! The Brakes on my 2020 z900rs cafe are really good. They work well. If you’re pushing the bike it can feel “squishy” when slowing at high speeds. A set of steel braided likes would prolly make the brakes go from pretty good to really great. Also even though they can feel squishy the brakes still have good feel I must say.

Nice review! How safe do you feel riding on 2 lane roads in Nashville? It looks like Wisonsin but without the winters, I am so burnt out on LA people and traffic time to go back home to Smyrna, it looks nice this time of year!
@bertsbike
@bertsbike 5 ай бұрын
Hey thanks! Yeah I'm fine with it. I usually avoid the main congested areas at peak hours (Interstate and downtown). Not only are the drivers terrible but the roads are chewed up in those areas. So I always plan the scenic route. Smyrna area seems fine tho. Cheers!

Getting one soon, like this week looking at a 2019 both I don't know if I should get it Grey with the green or the whole green and white, both same milage ish, but man can't wait to try it. I heard that if you put it in KTRC 2 helps with the snatchy throttle is that true? If you want to just chill.
@bertsbike
@bertsbike 6 ай бұрын
Both are great color schemes but I'm partial to a more understated look. The grey one would be my pick. But the green is classic Kawi! Honestly I never took it out of KRTC 1. But I'm pretty sure that's just a traction control thing and not a ride mode. 1 is less intensive and 2 is a little more. I believe many switch to 2 for rain. Cheers!

Only thing I hate is the chain. I clean and lube it after every ride because if I don’t shifting feels clunky. Do you have the same sensation? I use gear oil not wax.
@bertsbike
@bertsbike 5 ай бұрын
No, The gear box is fine for the most part except for the 1st to 2nd shift can feel clunky at times. For the chain; I've been using Motul Chain Paste. It's a little thicker than the lube and wax I'd been using from Maxima. It also doesn't come off in the rain or at least not as much as the regular. A carry over from my dual sport days. I clean/re-apply about every 300 miles or whenever needed.
