Fun Fact: One of the main reasons the Brown Recluse has gained such a "dangerous" or even "deadly" reputation is due to the fact that Staph infections, caused by the Staphylococcus bacteria (also known as MRSA), are often misdiagnosed as Brown Recluse bites. And considering Staph infections can be far more dangerous (sometimes even fatal) than the bite of a Brown Recluse, this has resulted in the poor spider gaining and maintaining a reputation that makes it sound far more sinister than it actually is.
@-echoroads-559619 күн бұрын
Yep. Happened to me. Had a small 1/4" wound appear on my abdomen a few years back, the "doctor" immediately said it was likely a brown recluse bite despite the fact we are just outside of their range here in western NC. You can find them here, but it's EXTREMELY rare. Turned out it was MRSA upon a visit to a more qualified doctor.

When I was mowing the grass, somehow a Wasp Spider I didn't see was catapulted onto the side of my throat. It bit me and it was a weird feeling first, like something wet was trying to get in my flesh, no pain, just some weird wetness, then suddenly it was like a deer fly bite, like something drilling into me, I then threw what ever was on my neck away in a swift movement and saw it was a wasp spider. The bite hurt a tiny bit for like 25 mins and that was it.

One spider that doesn't really pose a serious threat but I want to get your take on the pain of the initial bite would be a full-grown woodlouse spider found here in our good old United States. Of all the things he's taken a sting/bite from, the measly wolf spider is the one that brought you to a panic? That's... interesting... considering that's probably the most mundane, least dangerous spider he's ever handled (outside of the Daddy Longleg/Harvestman Spider or something silly like that). Suffice to say, Wolf Spiders are nothing to worry about, and are actually quite beneficial to have around the house seeing as they hunt and keep homes free of insects that are far more obnoxious than themselves. Whitetails only prey on other spiders, manly the Daddy Long Legs). Then there's the Nelson Cave Spider, that pray on Cave Weta (the heaviest insect on Earth) so have to be huge in leg span. I don't think anyone has documented the bite of one of these. Plus we have a large species of centipede, one that has bright blue legs and appendages. Surely if you keep envenomating the same area on the same arm, you're going to build up a resilience to bites in that area, and get a less accurate data. Please make sure you miss the veins, as you do not want to mainline spider venom. Also puncturing a vein hurts, damages and bruises way more than just the skin next to it.
@JacksWorldofWildlife3 ай бұрын
Quite literally not how that works. Additionally all of these venoms are so vastly different, my body can’t “build up” a tolerance as they are all “new” venoms with each test. Venom isn’t one standard thing, it can be completely different from species to species
