the station in my former home town had 47 truck bays but it got too small over the years. They currently built the new station with 55 truck bays. They have a manpower of at least 21 fire-fighters per shift and only run like 5 to 6calls in a 24 hour shift. They have sufficient time for maintenance work on the apparatus, practical training, workout, relax etc.

The CFD in my city currently invests 30 mil to tear down the old 47 bay station and rebuild it as 55 bay station ... and one of the companies from the VFD gets a new 3 or 4 bay station as well, and new apparatus are purchased every year

there are many similar, modern and historic, architectural interesting stations around the world, and stations like station 82 or station 15 from the LAFD aren't extraordinary large ones, so IMO, although indeed being very nice ones, they are pretty much equal to hundres of similar stations

uhm actually we need only a station crew of 21 fire-fighters for more than 50 units housed at the station ... John Kindley In Germany we rather go for less large instead of many small stations; The response time isn't affected much.stead of numerous apparatus from several stations making their way through city traffic on their own and vehicles required to pull over numerous times, the apparatus respond as aconvoy and vehicles pull over only once. In my city (population of 200k inhabitants) the CFD runs only one station which covers all of the city area 1st-due. They are able to cover roughly 95% of the city area within a 6 minutes drive at an average speed of 40 mph in city traffic. The CFD in the state's capital city ( population of 1.7 million) has 10, temporarily 11, fire stations. In each one of the cities with a CFD there's a VFD with one or several stations. The VFD is only dispatched in order to support the CFD in larger scenarios, staff the CFD station for possible further calls or in case of multiple calls at the same time

There are stations from volunteer departments which have the same size here, but from career fire departments there are stations which are a multiple of the one in Trento. No hate, I'm sure the station in Trento fullfills the local needs somehow, but to be really honest it's far from big for my scale. Austin World that's not correct, there are Pierce apparatus also used in Iceland, Chile etc, and some other American fire apparatus manufacturers like E-ONE, HME, International etc are used at USAG bases in other countries as well, e.g. in Germany. sure, you can as well place them in a pure concreete house and puzrchase the simpliest of fire apparatus with nothing looking good at all ... but when a place gives an architect the job to design a station, they won't choose the ugliest design, not the ugliest apparatus etc. Especially in the USA the apparatus are usually a prestige thing and so are the stations

For example a captain got traded from station 9, youmjust join and since they lack a person on A shift they put you at that station. So in simple sentence the department assigns u at a station you dont get to pick.

Some of the biggest wastes of taxpayer dollars I've ever seen are fire stations in the US. I'm a firefighter...but the waste is evident at some of them. There are NO other pubic service buildings quite like these MEGA fire stations. IF the same buildings were built for highway departments...the public would come unglued.

mega fire stations in the USA? There are hardly any of them?! Some of the biggest I know is e.g. station 6 in the city of College Station, and to be honest: it still seems tiny compared to the large stations in e.g. Germany, Austria, Poland etc. The largest station in my state is located in my home town and had until now "only" 47 truck bays and is currently upgraded to 55 truck bays. And it's far from being the biggest in the country

Just read FireHouse magazine and you'll see the display of very nice, very large stations in the annual fire station of they year article. They're big, they're expensive, and they're probably not necessary in many cases. It's hard to believe city managers fall for this expense at times. There is no doubt...some of this is excessive to house a few trucks and some firefighters on duty. FDNY Rescue 1 does a hell of a lot of work each year out of a very small station that barely fits the rig inside.

Actually I wrote an article on the station in my home town for the fire apparatus & equipment magazine already ... Thus the 47 bay station got too small to fit alla apapratus inside, and aprt from that, its old part was in a poor condition; But of course, tax payers money could also be invested in more important things like ... new street lights, a new golf course, ... it's nothing wrong with building a new station when its needed; Tey usually won't get a new one replacing this station within a few decades ...
