It helps that movie failed so spectacularly on such basic levels. “How about we have the actors slow down and speed up when ever they feel like it, because that will totally make the music better.” Meanwhile Jason Derulo isn’t only an actual musician, he also dances. Two skills sets where you can’t just slow down and speed up when ever you feel like it. So when he is told “do what you want with the tempo” he goes “alright I am going to keep to a beat” which a surprisingly amount of actors didn’t do. Meaning his number is way better than most of the songs in the movie, CAUSE HE DIDNT SCREW AROUND FOR NO REASON. He also actually fits the character he was given. Rum Tum Tugger is a rebellious cat, who is also vain, self absorbed and sexy. That last one is the only place where I don’t immediately go “Jason Derulo fits” but then I remember how “in your face” Rum Tum Tugger’s sex appeal is supposed to be, it suddenly makes sense. Even if I don’t personally find it sexy, I do believe the other cats do. Meanwhile, Jamie Anniedots is supposed to be caring and a motherly figure to the other cats. So why hire comedic actress Rebel Wilson? Busterfer Jones is meant to be a classy and respectable cat, so why hire James cordon? And, when Mr. Mustafoulis (I doubt I spelled any of these cats names correctly, but anyway) has such a difficult choreography for his song, that the stage show has Rum Tum Tugger singing the it, cause no actor could do that dance and sing well at the same time; why, would the movie cast an actor with no dancing experience, and then have the character not dance? They’re acting as if the whole point of the number isn’t to show off cool dance moves, but it is. So…what were they thinking? And when the lyrics literally say “makavity’s a ginger cat” why do you make Idris Elba look naked? When a movie with a budget of almost $1 billion makes such stupid decisions, and I haven’t even talked about the CGI, no wonder mister “fits the part and keeps to a beat” made it out okay.

Fancy legitimately makes me angry because that hook is pure gold and charli xcx kills it but the rapping is so dogshit in that song. At least it gave us handy by weird al, he shows how much difference some good lyrics and a charismatic performer can make as he uses pretty much the exact same tempo in the rap but he makes it work with satisfying (and funny) lyrics and a good energy.
