I agree about the bucket size! When I transplanted a tomato plant I started from seed last year, I put it into a 5 Gallon bucket and i kept it alive. But it didn’t thrive in there. I ended up transferring to the ground. And it did great!

Best video ever. I'm in Southern California and just getting into gardening. My backyard is all concrete and pavers so containers are my only choice (without tearing apart concrete). I started with plants on my patio (sago, date palms, succulents, ferns) but now want to venture out and grow vegetables. So thankful for youTube!! I'm now subscribed and ready to learn! :)

Thanks so much for this video! About a decade ago my neighbor inspired me to grow a little garden and he helped me ready my soil with his big tilling machine. I got really lucky and only planted 4 tomato plants (and a few other things) that went hog wild and produced tons of tomatoes from the very beginning of summer until frost, and I was giving tomatoes away to everyone. It was so easy that I was spoiled as I basically just watered and added some Miracle Grow and shazam...more gorgeous tomatoes than I knew what to do with! My neighbor and his machine have since moved away and I was thinking about doing some container tomatoes. I started watching some videos on the topic and this was the best, most informative, and most inspiring one I've found. I'm leaning towards using the smart pots or fabric pots and I'll be buying my plants as it's a bit late to be starting with seeds since I don't even have them yet. Now I'm going to check out your other videos as I'm also thinking of growing some bell peppers, zucchini, and cherry tomatoes!

Holy crap. Determinant or indeterminate. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I was today years old when I found out the plants had that determination. (See what I did there lmao) This would have saved us so much work over the years as we grew tomatoes. Those plants that grew into monsters and couldn’t be tamed. Now I know how to AVOID those!

About 5-gallon buckets - I recommend them *highly* for beginners simply because they're so easy/cheap to get (often free) and work with. Upfront cost is a huge factor keeping folks from getting started, and buying several large containers and many bags of soil to fill them adds up *fast* at the cash register. The trick with 5's is to put a water reservoir in them so they never dry out completely. Simply take a plastic bottle - a 2-liter soda bottle fits perfectly - and cut a few small slits near the top. Run a couple 18" pieces of nylon rope into the bottle to reach out into the soil and wick water for the roots if you want, but if you skip that part the roots will simply grow right into those slits to access the water. Bury that so the top of the container just sticks above the soil and keep the bottle full of plain water or weak nutrient solution (take your favorite soluble fertilizer and mix it 1/4 strength for steady use.) Try a couple, you will be pleased with the growth and production you get from such a small amount of soil. I've often found that the roots do very well in the soil and *also* fill up that reservoir. Healthy roots with steady access to water and nutrients gives you results almost like doing true hydroponics, at *far* less cost than most hydro set-ups or using 20 gallons of store-bought soil for every single plant. I've grown many varieties of heavy-feeding/high-water-need plants like tomatoes, peppers cukes, etc this way for years now and I get very worthwhile harvests every time.

I might give it a go. So many folks are telling me I should so perhaps I will. My buckets are getting real old, might be at the end of their life but I think one more season can be had.

@@ScottHead Just try one or two of them with plants you're already comfortable with. It just about takes longer to describe it than it does to set one up :) It's true though, even the good food grade buckets only last a few years out in the sun. Grab one by the rim and if you can easily break a piece off, it's gotten too brittle from the UV & heat, and needs to be replaced. But my source for once-used buckets (mainly they were originally filled with cherries) charges so little for them that two dollars each for 4-5 year's use is very much worth it to me.

Just a heads up...It's not always time to plant, just because the store has them in stock. I live in the foothills west of Denver, and our local Home Depot ALWAYS starts stocking the vegetables at least a month prior to our typical last frost date. Do your research for your areas last frost date, instead of relying on the supplier to prevent yourself some heart ache...

True and take it down one zone for perrennials.. I'm in melon country Rocky Ford we are listed as 5b.. NOT.. in winter it gets well below -20.. we hit 35 below some winters and 110 in summer.. $11.00 for a 20 gallon pot. I miss those days, 4 years ago. Now, they’re $30-$40 a piece. Bags from here on out! It just ust makes sense for those in small areas and low budgets and the plants will thrive more with oxygen to the roots.

I'm a total newb....saw some Better Boy tomato plants at Aldi the other day...no experience growing them whatsoever...got a wild hair and wanted to give it a go. I've been trying to research and watch videos, and yours answered every single question I had (plus some I didn't even know to ask) about starting them. Went out to Home Depot this afternoon and bought everything you recommended, down to to the 20 gallon containers (except mine are red, hehe). THANK YOU! I'm excited to get started. I do mainly container gardening so far, and will continue to do so even though I have a big back yard. In my first year I got at least 200 early girl tomatoes off of 6 plants. I used wicking buckets and I really recommend them. It takes all the guess work out of watering. Fill the fill tube with water until it comes out the hole in the bottom bucket. Since your bottom watering it also reduces splashing on your plants. How to make them is all over youtube and all it takes is two 5 gallon buckets, a plastic cup, and a short piece of pvc pipe to make one.

Using them to 'contain' my pots, I like that you address Apartment Dwellers, you know MOST people do live in apartments NOT homes! Appreciate your honesty, "Don't be trying to grow no SUN LOVING plants on a balcony that only gets 4 hrs of Sun at best, there are veggies for that, lol! This is an excellent video. I dived into container tomatoes 2 summers ago. I only planted 4 plants (two each of a cherry tomato and a regular sized) I almost couldn't keep up with them. I just chalked it up to an experiment and well... had waaaay more tomatoes than I knew what to do with. lol Learning to water tomatoes was definitely a learning curve. I have full sun in my back yard so it was interesting to say the least. I have the side yard on the west side of my house and I have cement siding. I'm fully tempted to set up my pots up on that side. I think they would like the heat that the siding absorbs. I'm in the PNW, so our summers are not as consistently high heat as the midwest but it's not as wet in the summer as you'd think. I used a larger pot, it's the plastic version of a half a wine barrel. I had decent success. Learned a lot! I didn't grow any in 2020 but I think I'm ready for another challenge. Very informative video.

It's amazing that yellow pear tomatoes I grew 10 years ago are now so popular that most stores only sell seeds. I don't know if germinating these tomatoes are difficult as it is hard to find 6" starters .The first time I grew these I loved them for snacking and they yielded enough to give away. Because of there size they look like you should pick them even in a salad up just to taste them. My sister said the yellow pear tomatoes were so much better than standard cherry tomatoes and great for salads and guest who never had them complimented her on them. I will grow one in a 10 gallon container this year. I like better boy and try better bush in my garden for indeterminate variety. Everyone has their own method of grading tomato's which is primarily based on simply taste or how they are using them. I always grew early girl and celebrity for a fast yield but I grew to like the quality of better boy and want to try better bush from what I seen of them as they may be a little larger. I grow with cages but beefsteak and whoppers are just too big and worry from falling of while ripening. their

I had blossom end rot 2 years ago, so I added lime as best I could with lime slaked into the watering water, it did the trick. So now I always add a handful of lime whenever I plant tomatoes. It really is a must.

My first ever tomato plant (last year) was in a 5liter container. It produced the most delicious tasting cherry tomatoes I have ever eaten. It snapped in the wind, I dropped my phone on it's shoots and yet, it still produced a decent sized bowl of cheery tomatoes. This year I'm using a 40liter container, let 'er rip :)

You're right about eager producers coming from the big company greenhouses. My bonnie sunsugar tomatos are in a 2 gallon pot and probably have 90+ tomatoes on them already. The ones from the local nursery are producing well but certainly slower.

This year I'm growing more tumblers (determinate). I've doubled it to 5. Last year I got blight, but the tumblers escaped it by producing a crop before the blight hit. It broke my heart to bin them. But at least I had enjoyed the tumblers. This year I will plant in pots of the indeterminate with new compost and hope for the best. I have a tiny tiny space, but I will not let that get in my way.

I grow tomatoes from seed. One time I had several that were 2 feet or so before it was warm enough to put outdoors. So I planted them a foot deep. Well, one broke off right at the roots! I said hell with it, stuck it deep in the ground, and babied the hell out of it by watering every day, often twice a day, fertilizer. That stem took hold in the ground and ended up one of my best growers.

Another inexpensive idea is to buy a 55 gallon plastic food grade drum. Cut it in half then plant in both ends. You can buy on Ebay for $30.00. Makes two pots. God bless

Yes, that's sort of a small raised bed. You can grow quite a lot in each half of that barrel. Some people even cut them into thirds and get three beds that way (the middle one just doesn't have a bottom, obviously). That still gives you over a foot deep in all three containers, and that's *plenty* for crops that fruit above ground. Heck, even most potato farmers don't have topsoil an entire foot deep. (Honestly, many gardeners and experts wayyy over-estimate the amount of soil most veg plants really need...)
