I actually sold as an artist at this con. It was an… experience . The con itself was great, (TAM was there too!) but afterwards the free hotel room promised to me suddenly was a 300$+ charge on my account. I had to fight to get it taken off. I learned later that this happened even to the Japanese guests that flew all the way there. Such a shame because I had ALOT of fun at the end dance party etc They expected a higher turnout…

@@Rozy17 Conventions are also drastically more expensive to host than you'd expect. The hotel hoses you left and right, and if you don't fill all the rooms you said you would you're still on the hook for the room fees. and it's not unusual for a single small panel room to cost well over two thousand dollars per day

@@chris2746 yeah, doesn't surprise me really. I remember friends once looking to book a table at one for their comic and that alone was still quite expensive. Most of the western Touhou conventions are not regulated. There were rumors of cosplay sex orgies in hotels, lewd pool parties with drugs, or figures and Fumo merch scams. Mexico and South America are no exception. I spent much money in local Touhou conventions on 2015 to 2017, and in the end, was a big dissapointment, due to bad logistics, shaddy adverticing, and bad cramped locations.

@@Archedgar adult cosplay sex orgies either Hetero or LGTB, if handle with proper healthy meassures (security, condoms, etc) or even in proper love hotels, is a unique experience. But, as you know, could end in extremely disturbing ways. In the new trending Vtubers conventions, there are sus Touhou fans organizing mini-meet ups inside the hotel hosting the event, with secret adds posted in social media and Discord, inviting and luring people into the rooms with Fumo plushies and beer with no parental restrictions. Huh, for the longest time I struggled to see Touhou in any bad light (hence I gave it the title of the most "purest" Fandom (at least compared to MHA and more mainstream stuff)) but this one could be the first stain I see in this community. Granted it is not THAT big of a stain, but a stain non of the less. Thanks for sharing this news. I still hold the opinion that Touhou still has THE most purest Fandom compared to other franchises but no one is immune to mistakes. Here's for the hope that the next Touhou con is a good one! EDIT - ok so a lot are saying things back at my statement so let me expand. When I say pure I dont mean free from R34 or hentai and stuff. that is 100% normal in any Japanese media. What I meant pure is in modern western anime terms. Like the MHA or Danganronpa fandom, I can never skip a day where I don't see someone in the fandom getting cancelled or trying to push a political thing or having backlash from creator to fan and etc. If anything I say the Kinda low profile of the Touhou community is a good thing as at least we mostly behave online. I rarely seen Touhou fans fuck up on that department. I use pure as I don't know any other word or phrase so if you all got better ideas, let me know.

I will venture to say that possibly the reason for the failure of the Touhoucon was due to two factors: 1) The Las Pegasus, Dash Con, and Rainfurrest incidents, but especially the Las Pegasus incident, when you reported that they had problems with convention attendees and many of the guests didn't have their hotel expenses covered, I shouldn't We were surprised that Zun or the hotel managers, who communicate with each other, ended up thinking that they could be facing another failed convention and if we take into account the apocalyptic disaster that was the Rainfurrest, no one would want to go through another similar situation. a dishonest and rude attendee can always be kicked in the ass but when there is a lot of mistrust and a shady past of events that turned out to be frauds, disasters that the organizers failed to organize and whatever the hell Rainfurrest was, then nobody would to put their hands in the fire for a then unknown Internet franchise, which brings us to the next point 2) Touhou was only extremely famous in Japan back then. Yes there were fans within the West but let's be fair, we were a minority. even I did not belong to the Touhou fandom until the end of 2019 and even so I remember seeing a subtitled chapter of Phantom Memories and the vast majority of the comments on the video were in Japanese. I do not deny Touhou may have had a moment of fame in the West in the past but, and at the risk of looking like an idiot by saying it, I dare to say that it is now that Touhou is enjoying great popularity in all countries. Westerners. being that the reason why Touhoucon did not have the repercussion that it deserved and why I pray that Touhoufest is the first of many conventions in honor of the franchise that we love

Running a convention is way more expensive than most people expect, and the way a lot of the hotel/convention center contracts are written can really come back and bite you if you aren't extremely careful with what you agree to in the contract, or over estimate the attendance and hotel room demand. Small panel rooms can easily be over 2k/day. If you don't fill the hotel room block you're usually still on the hook for most if not all of the room fees that the hotel would otherwise have received. Even things like if the guests don't order as much room service as you contracted for can bite the convention. Fandom conventions can be particularly tricky to perform viably as the demographic tends to generally be younger with less disposable income. Its super common for people to stack up 6+ people in a room to save money, as well as often times people will "ghost" a convention and not purchase a registration but still enjoy the convention atmosphere in the common areas or share badges. So if you expect 1000 people, you might only have hotel rooms and registration for less than 80% of that. And when you're dealing with really thin margins to start with that can easily tip you into the red.

I think I remember something about this years ago but it's definitely something to hear how it just suddenly vanished off the face of the Earth after only 2 different conventions. It's been a goal of mine since getting into Touhou over a decade ago to go to a convention where there's some involvement and have fun, whether that be a Comiket, Reitaisai or maybe I get convinced enough to go to the Touhoufest, I would just love to interact with fans in person instead of it being a fleating thing I do every now and then. It'd give me one more excuse to visit Japan or some other place not only just for sightseeing and other things.

Never thought I'd see the day that old walfas panel get mentioned outside the community. Legit was sweating bullets when speaking. Its a pretty common story for most of us that were there actively enjoyed the con itself. If you were already paying for your hotel it was genuinely a great time. Touhoucon 2015 was my first convention and it was special because I got to go with nearly 20 of my friends from all over the States and met up for the first time. Between panels, cosplay photos, disneyland, music, and katsu curry burgers, it was kinda magical at the time. We were all sad learning about the mismanagement afterwards. Both in the best and worst possible way it was a once in a lifetime experience. Glad to see another Touhou convention has been a success. Maybe I'll fly back out to Cali for the next one!

It’s a huge mess and evidence can be checked at a FB group. Managed to help, despite the hard times. I am not happy with their budget management (got too overconfident that at-door tickets aren’t making profit back) And am afraid that a future fan dedicated con would go into Hell. Yes I’m talking about Touhoufest, to which I cannot attend. It’s really wild but one that crushed me, and the future of inviting JP guests coming over to USA again... P.S. Hecc yea PotFV!!

Thanks for sharing. It looks like the organizer doesn't have any prior convention hosting experience, and their enthusiasm went out of control as they focused all their financial resources into inviting big name celebrities, but neglected the little things like the guest's accommodations. The confusion between staff and attendees caused by a lack of communication within the management circle is readily apparent. Given that their convention was meant to mimic Reitaisai, they should have instead looked into how Reitaisai operated and adapt that method to their own In the past touhou have been in most conventions, but mostly in the form of panels, group photoshoots, and some sporadic merchandise, there was a definite interest but it was never the main focus at most conventions. Nowadays with the appearance of franchises like Azure Lane and Genshin Impact, touhou is steadily on the decline. Why, in recent years at my local convention you could hardly see any touhou cosplays, much less a group photoshoot, even a panel that appears in most years are no longer being run

If I happen to strike a conversation with someone, I’ll just have to express discussing philosophical questions like,”why is Cirno so smart?” I struggled for a few days either to go or not or just snap some pictures, get a Reimu Funo souvenir and leave since I won’t have anything else to do unless if I had a drone and fly a fumo on it for laughs and giggles 😏🍷😪 But in the end, I hope and really hope Touhou fest is a success for all the true fans as it’s a small, comfortable fandom here on the west coast and it would be a bummer if it fails and is found to be the last one in many yrs. ✌🏻

I've made some other comments already, but that convention centre in Anaheim is huge and expensive. I can see Touhou Conventions working just on a far-far smaller scale. And I don't think that's a bad thing! Anime Conventions are absolutely massive, but you don't need an absolutely huge convention centre, just keep it small and simple with limited tickets. The Touhou Community unfortunately massively fluctuates with people coming in and out of the community all the time, so that's the safest way of running things

Uh, being a Touhou fan, at the same time I participate in local MLP fandom, and personally know many people who run MLP conventions in Russia (we have about one major convention per year, let alone a half dozen smaller fests). These guys also know many details about western conventions, like BabsCon, Czequestria, etc., and, of course, BronyCon itself; and yes, they often tell the story of Las Pegasus Unicon, so it became quite a well known fandom meme. Like, when something's gonna fail, LPUC counts as an ultimate example of failed convention, and we talk, like, "DerpFest 2019 was failed at a level about .15 to .25 LPUC". And here I see a perfect example of a convention in Touhou fandom that is failed about 1.0 LPUC, right? The only convention I know about that may be considered failed more than 1.0 LPUC is that DashCon with ball pit and stuff, but I see that Touhoucon is dangerously near the limit. What's even more intriguing, that it looks to be failed the exact same way LPUC did. (And they still dare to say that MLP and Touhou is not the same thing...) P.S. Unfortunately, there are much fewer Touhou conventions in the western world, and speaking of Russia, there wasn't even a single one sadly. Even Genshin Impact had a local fest a few weeks ago, but no Touhou. That's probably the most noticeable difference I guess...

Ok, I have finished the video, and thankfully not malicious like I was expecting. Mismanagement for huge events like this seem pretty common. Side note, I went to the same hotel for the Pokémon World Championships and sounds like a hype location for a convention. In terms of possible future cons? The Touhou Community always seems bigger than it really is for those within it, unfortunately. Back in 2015 the Touhou Community wasn't even that big, with touhoumania being in a bit of a lull, and the main focus in 2020+ is more on fumos and memes than the games and fanart themselves, and the average age of a Touhou fan has definitely decreased a lot. For a convention to work on a yearly basis you need a dedicated group that would be willing to come year on year, and Touhou is kinda in that fad phase where a lot will just drop it after a year or 2

I remember seeing their tables at AX but never went cause I was a broke college student and no way I could afford to go to two conventions.

hey there! as an attendee, TouhouCon was actually really fun, but there were a lot of elitists, creepy photographers, and well, staff budget went kaboom. I didn't hear about the budget problem until after the con, and was kinda appalled since a lot of the staff were friends of mine and I thought they had it together. I don't have many answers to any questions despite my connections.

I was planning on getting the games, but the one thing is that I don't have an account to buy said games and I would feel like I pirated the games by downloading them from Moriya Shrine

well i mean for the hotel rooms instead of having free, why did they just make it a lot more cheaper (for ex: 60% off instead of full price) i mean its maybe one of the ways they could not be in dept or reduce the damages at least and considering of how much people was there, maybe they could make a profit off of that (not a big one but i mean just enough)

A western touhoucon sounds more like a grease convention.

I am not really suprised that it failed, Touhou fandom is the most isolated fandom I ever saw.

Ignoring the convention itself i have to say its honestely amazing how a single guy was able to create something with such a passionate fanbase We often hear about western indie games made by a single person but solo dev succeses like this seen to be really rare on asia

Touhou fest? Damn I have to buy a Solaire of astoria costplay before that happens so that I can lecture people on why rolling is better than focusing and grazing because you get i frames when you do it! (inspired by that one dude that started randomly fighting people at comic con) \[T]/

1k subs and a video quality like that? You make some touhou videos, but also maintain a nice variation with other games aswell. I wonder where people like you are everyday. Say, are you interested in joining a group with other touhou Content Creators?

So it was not like Dashcon, it seems like a less than stellar Summer of Sonic with a bit of a housing problem... Honestly i don't see much of a problem. I have never visited a convention before but if Sonic fans can do it, why shouldn't you guys? I mean, according to the wiki the SOS only happened around 4 times already.
