The Tour-Proven Downswing Move To Transfer Your Weight Correctly

“How do you start the downswing?” is a very common question I receive. The answer is that your downswing should begin with a movement of your weight towards the target. That “weight shift” is a lower body weight shift and is in the form, primarily, of a pelvic sway or slide.
However, this vital movement has been discouraged on many social media channels by coaches peddling the notion that you need to TURN your hips and get OPEN to play good golf. This move is commonly referred to as the “butt twist”.
The butt twist has caused many golfers to start swinging excessively across the ball which results in a loss of power and control.
This video explains the importance of getting sufficient hip sway or slide into your golf swing and a drill (using a simple water bottle) to help you train the correct downswing sequence and trail leg and trail foot banking which many of the best players in the world demonstrate.
So save yourself from the BUTT TWIST nonsense and learn to move your weight in the downswing like the best players do.

He is the only one that doesn't change his message depending upon other YT "coaches" latest theories. They just watch each other's latest ideas and reproduce in their own style. I'd tried what I thought was ST a few times without success. Rob's light bulb moment of ST for me was using 2 cameras and this gave me the explanation of tilt ..... which is completely different to turn. 🙏🙏🙏🙏. Game changer

Hey Rob. When I first started playing I became a 7 handicap within 3 years. But people kept saying I was " swaying" so I took their advise and started turning more. After watching your video I realize they didn't know what they were talking about, or they purposely mislead me. I haven't been able to get off my right side since. For the first time in 35 years I went back to "swaying" and it made a immediate difference. Just today I told a friend I was quitting the game because I wasn't having fun playing. But recent results after watching this video may fuel my desire to play again. Thanks for posting.

(Larry San Diego) Rob I have been struggling with the lateral weight shift since my focus on S&T since your instructions and this video has provided an excellent template to eliminate my early extension. Just started doing the drills today and after a while didn't knock over my case of water (kidding) 'water bottle and plan to incorporate on a daily basis being retired. Thanks again!

This is spot on. I don’t do this with my irons, but with my driver I always hit a pull hook where I feel that I’m stuck and my wrists violently roll over. It’s very frustrating because it happens 90% of my driver swings. I must do this drill

I'm not saying I have this exact issue or anything, but I have been prescribed a similar drill by Ayumi Hori, another S&T instructor, where you just start with your foot banked to the left to begin with, which just completely immobilizes it right out of the gate. Tough! :D

Greta video. As u look at the model swing in the left of the video, their hips move forward but at impact, the lead hip is back and hips have rotated. This is my challenge. Hips move forward ok, footwork seems ok, but hips are facing the ball at impact. Front hip only moves back and up well after contact. Cannot figure this part out.

Great video Rob as always. I have a problem hip sway causing to push the ball to the right. What am I doing wrong? Thanks Rob
@robcheneygolf1
@robcheneygolf1 7 ай бұрын
If you’re pushing to the right then it’s likely your swing path is too far to the right. You could move the ball position more forward to help reduce the amount you swing to the right.

I have a question. You talk about this is the crush the can and the hip video. Is this the main first move I make in the downswing? And if so are my arms just dropping on their own? Or am I to push my rear arm to a straight position at the same time as this? Thank you!

Hey Rob, I love all of your videos and S&T has really started to drop my score and fix my swing more than I could ever imagine! One thing I'm confused about is in some of your videos, you mention to move your pelvis towards the target at set up, to front load the back swing. However here, you're saying to sway the hip towards the target, then turn. What I'm confused about is how these two concepts work together? If I pre-load my weight forwards before my backswing, I find it difficult to sway even more on my downswing, since I'm already over there. Is the first concept for beginners and this video more for low handicap golfers?

Rob I am a recent convert to S&T from following you on Jesse Franke on You Tube. What are your view on “pre setting” the left knee dip and the straighten of the right leg. This seems to enable me to stack my head over the ball. Any observations.
@robcheneygolf1
@robcheneygolf1 2 ай бұрын
I wouldn't pre-set ALL of the knee flex change at set-up. But you can certainly modify the set-up slightly to encourage this move to take place more naturally throughout the backswing.

If the problem is too much driving the front knee back and bent during back swing, would putting the bottle in front of front ankle and trying not to knock down the bottle be a good idea? In other words the opposite thought process for the back swing. I have too much hip turn causing the front knee to almost touch the rear knee at the top during transition. I haven't found many video about this that go deep into that issue.

Great video, as usual! One request-could you do a video with Swing Catalyst,or anything else that visually and graphically shows weight/pressure transfer? Lead and trail foot weight distribution is of obvious interest, but also toe vs heel distribution would be interesting, and I haven’t come across an S&T video demonstrating that. Just an idea…
