Thank you Jeffery!!!!!! If I had known what you said, "If you understand the Tower of Babel, then you gain a huge advantage when reading anything else in the Old Testament." when I started studying the Bible I would have had all these years gone by for me, to have a clearer view of Scripture. I would have better understood the nations of the OT and all the battles fought would have made more sense to me. I know God used and is still using the nations for His purposes but this understanding of Yewah at the Tower of Bable dividing all the 70 nations to have their own gods and how God used them to bring us full circle to Jesus and how all of that history brings Israel to such importance when Christ comes again. This was very eye opening for me. Thank you again. WOW

Yeah, Michael Heiser explains this but the translation and description here is inaccurate. God did NOT distribute the people to other “gods” for them to worship. He assigned what we would call angels, or spiritual protectors over them. That’s why the letters to the churches say to the angel of this church or that… angel means messenger. In this case the translation calling them “gods” and saying that YWH assigned the nations to other gods is NOT a biblical translation.

On the contrary, sometimes I use of lowercase "g" in reference to Yahweh intentionally-because in those instances, I'm not using the word "god" as a proper noun on purpose. A similar phenomenon occurs when we refer to humans by their role. People might refer to their mother as their mom, but they also call her "Mom." "Mom" isn't my mom's name-but she's my mom, so I call her Mom. I grew up calling my mom "Mom," my dad "Dad" and my god "God." =)

It seems like it would be more natural to understand Deuteronomy 4:19 as saying that God created the "sun, moon, stars..." for the benefit of all people (Romans 1:20 comes to mind) but not for the people of the earth to worship those things. Worship of anything other than the one true God is sin. God does not sin nor does He tempt anyone to sin (James 1:13). So I'm not sure how you conclude that God intended for other nations to worship false gods.
@OverviewBible4 жыл бұрын
There's a lot to unpack here, Cole-and I hope to be able to do so in future videos. Alas, this isn't my full-time job! ;-) I don't conclude that other nations worshipping "false gods" was exactly God's "Plan A." Psalm 82 presents these other divine beings (which Asaph believes ultimately answer to the Israelite God, YHWH) as having the option to oversee their nations in ways that honored the Lord Most High, but these lesser gods chose NOT to do so-instead encouraging systems that reward pride and oppression rather than meekness and love. These lesser gods could have given glory and attention to the Lord Most High. But they didn't. That's hardly God tempting the people of earth to sin. I know the idea of God delegating authority can be a hard concept to swallow. But he does so throughout Scripture, in both the Old and New Testaments. Not everyone who receives God's authority handles it in a God-honoring way. That goes for lesser gods and humans alike. ;-)

Genesis 11:7-9 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city. Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth. The Us here is the trinity..God the Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit ….it doesn’t say and other gods along with God confused their languages . As the previous comment alluded to, I think Jeffery's been hanging around with Michael Heiser. Other than these 2 guys, I've NEVER heard teaching about the foundational meaning of the Babel narrative, from ANYONE. My analogy is this. We hear many very correct bible teachings from many different sources. And it's like putting together a 1000 piece puzzle, where you have the corners done, and a few little sections done, but you can't fit the sections together because you don't know what it looks like because you don't have the puzzle box cover. This teaching, and the "Reversing Hermon" teaching from Heiser provides the box cover. So, we see the picture of the entire plan of salvation from God's point of view.

I have a lot of respect for Dr. Heiser-I used to work with him and I worked with Lexham Press to help promote the Unseen Realm when it came out. It really depends on what you mean by "destroyed." In a way, Babylon and the works of the devil were destroyed in Christ's sacrifice and resurrection (1 John 3:8). However, that presence was still at work in Paul's day (Ephesians 2:1-2), and oppression, greed, corruption, violence, and coercion are still the way the kingdoms of the world (Babylon) operate.
@Motwn242 жыл бұрын
Vs. 9 clearly says the LORD confused their language. This man is mishandling the Word of Truth by labeling it "the Gods" in his teaching. Vs 7 does say "us" but later equates the "us" as the Lord(singular). Clearly the word "us" refers to nature of the Lord. If you read the Torah, YHWH says that he is the "living God" and graven images are images "made to be Gods" by other people groups. BUT, they have no life themselves. They maybe made in the "likeness of things above" (Exodus 20:4) BUT they themselves have no life. Dueteronomy 4:16-18 also shows them as man made. Just because they are treated as a LIVING GODS does not mean they ARE living Gods. In Exodus, YHWH is never found fighting any other god nor was Pharoh able to call aid for his people from a god. Rather, we only see that YHWH inflicting his wrath on Egypt. In other words, there was no living God to defend or attack for them. Rather, Pharoh called on Magicians with secret art and not their religous priests.(Exodus 7:11) In Daniel 10:21, the Bible describes Michael(not YHWH) as Israel "prince". It is therefore clear that the term "princes" does not refer to gods but spiritual beings standing against other spiritual beings on behalf of the nation. If that is the case, What does scripture teach? The scripture teaches that Satan (not gods) has blinded(decieved) the minds of individuals from following the true living God of the Bible. It doesnt mean idols being worshipped are actual living beings, but Satan has blinded peoples eyes to see them for what they really are: false Gods. Ex. Did Eve believe the serpent to be God to obey him or does the bible teach she was decieved? The bible teaches the latter. It is the same tactic the enemy uses today. He decieves people but they worship false gods.

Just a comment. The Sons of God reference to Psalms 82 is referring to the rulers of Israel such as the leaders since Jesus refers to this saying to the Pharisees and TOTL isn’t it written I said you are God’s you are all sins of the Most High. Jesus is referring to humans as he is talking to the Pharisees. This seems to be overlooked by those who subscribe to Dr Heiser interpretation.
@tyrothrock2564 жыл бұрын
Jesus would know best the context so it seems to me the sons of God are talking about humans. I think people so messed up thinking sons of God mated with daughters of men thinking its angels and humans when it is godly men of Seth or Enosh mating with sinful and worldly women. God even says to not intermarry because of worldly women not because of Nephilim DNA and all that.
@OverviewBible4 жыл бұрын
Good thoughts, but I think we're interpreting Jesus' use of Psalm 82 differently, Ty. (For those following along at home, Ty's referencing John 10:34-36, wherein Jesus says to his Jewish opponents: Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are “gods” ’? If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God came-and Scripture cannot be set aside-what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? [NIV]) A few things are important to note here. One is that Jesus is saying this in response to the Jews who want to stone him for blasphemy. The Jews call Jesus a "mere man" who claims to be God. So Jesus' response is in the context of being called a mere man (which the author of John disagrees with). Second: When Jesus quotes the Psalm and says, "You are gods," he's not referring to his Jewish opponents. In fact, he goes on to say "them," i.e., the group that the Psalmist envisioned God speaking to. Now, it would be entirely understandable for a modern Christian to say, "But Jeffrey, Jesus then refers to that same group of people as that the ones "to whom the word of God came." That means he's talking about the ancient Hebrews who received the Scriptures from God, right?" This is where we make a (sometimes) dangerous leap in interpretation. We're used to referring to the Bible as "the word of God." But the Bible itself uses "the word of God" in a broader sense-for example, Luke refers to the message of Jesus as "the word of God," even though he's referring to things that were said long before any of the four Gospels were written (Acts 4:31; 8:14; 11:1, etc.). In the case of Jesus on Psalm 82, I think it's reasonable to allow "word of God" to mean the Psalm's message, and the one "to whom the word of God came" to mean the "gods" addressed in the Psalm. And although there's some blurred lines when it comes to humans being addressed as / treated like gods in the OT, I think it makes even MORE sense for Jesus to be referencing divine addressees of this Psalm. He's asserting that not only is he no mere man (of earthly origin), but he is also more God than even the other divine beings that the Psalms recognize.

Do you see it as possible or even likely that the old pharaohs who claimed to be gods were men literally possessed by these principalities and powers?
@OverviewBible2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say that, because that feels be trying to fit an ancient Israelite narrative into a first-century Christian framework for how the divine realm works. As far as an ancient Israelite would have been concerned, Pharaoh was one of the oppressive gods of Egypt that the god of Israel executed judgment on. The precise mechanics of Pharaoh's divinity aren't important to the story. It's a cool thought, though. And depending on how we define "possessed" and "principalities and powers," this interpretation could be anywhere from "100% spot on" to "100% loony tunes." ;-)

Did the author of the story of the Tower of Babel intend for his audience to interpret it as history? Or, did he intend for them to interpret it merely as a metaphor?
@DanielGrovePhoto2 жыл бұрын
Depends if it was metaphor or real history to begin with.
@nothosaur2 жыл бұрын
@@DanielGrovePhoto A story becomes a metaphor only if/when a writer expresses it as a metaphor, independent of reality. What I want to know is the intention of the writer. For example, Charles Dickens wrote "Oliver Twist" with the intention that the reader interpret it as an allegory. Nobody disputes that there really were orphanages in England in 1830, and there were pickpocket orphans. But, none of the contents of that book should be interpreted as history. We know the Dickens fabricated with the purpose of entertaining the reader, and to teach a moral lesson. Gordon Wood wrote "The Radicalism of the American Revolution" with the intention that the reader interpret it as history. He purpose was to communicate the study of a past event to the reader, sincerely claiming that it is a description of reality, and supporting such claim with footnotes/endnotes to primary sources. My question, reframed, is this: did the author have the same intention as Dickens or the same intention of Wood?

Around 3 minutes you say the godS confuse human language but in Genesis 11:9 it says LORD (english) or Yehova (Hebrew h3068) which is not plural. Where are you getting your plurality from in this video? Deuteronomy 4:19 is not saying there are other existing gods. He's simply stating that some people worship the sun, moon, and stars. A pretty basic ancient civilization thing to do. But they are not acknowledged as legitimate supernatural entities. The host of heaven is not angels or beings either but referring to the 3rd heaven aka space. Concerning Dagon God did not behead another god being. He knocked over a stone idol and it's head broke off. Deuteronomy 4:18 and Isaiah 37:19 paint the picture that the gods that were worshiped outside of Israel were not even gods at all but made up beings represented by wood and stone that had no power or super natural existence. I could go on but I really feel you are pushing a worldview that simply is not there and is not presented by the Bible. Deuteronomy 4:35: “You were shown these things so that you might know that the LORD is God; besides Him there is no other.” Deuteronomy 6:4: “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.” Malachi 2:10a, “Have we not all one Father? Did not one God create us?” 1 Corinthians 8:6: “Yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.” Ephesians 4:6: “One God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” 1 Timothy 2:5: “For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” James 2:19: “You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that-and shudder.”

Pastor, I respectfully beg to differ on some areas that you shared... 1. There is only ONE God, Capital G and rest are gods or deities or god-heads , small g, n they were actually fallen or nephilims, descendents of fallen. Refer to the 200 watchers who felled and created so much havoc till today, in Book of Enoch ,Gen3, 2Peter2:4, James Jude,Revelation. 2. Only God n His angels,Michael n some arch angels, destroyed the Tower of Babel and YWYH aka God caused confusion by making babylonians/sumerians spoke different lamguages instead of one. He then scattered the rebellious Nimrod n babylonians to different nations thats already "ruled" by these fallen god-heads, mind you, these gods were not God-friendly nor humans friendly. I Now,it's very important to know why God did this because 1. Nimrod was very arrogant hunter who through occult became a nephilim,probably beat the others to rise to power n built Tower as a portal to invade heavens n rule over heavens n earth,like lucifer. He wanted to kill YWYH. There are many remnants of the Tower of Babel in Iraq n Mosul today. You can see the Babylonian/Assyrian artifacts in SFO museum of antiquities to support what Ps Jefferey sharing here. Statues are life size,mind you. Well, guess what, CERN is the modern Babel, built deep underground. Nimrod was beginning of occult on earth n the scattered people continued their rebellious oppressive works under various empires,Babylon,Caldeans, Assyrians,Persia,Greece,Roman through history till today. Mind you,in Gen3 ,the fallens n nephilims descendents were experiementing cross- breeding of all YWYH living creation ,purpose is to corrupt God's pure DNA in us n create a hybrids race. Why do you think YWYH sent the flood or Great Deluge to destroy "mankind"? Because humans were tainted n cross-breed, so that none or no woman could carry the Messianic Seed to redeem us. Its satan backup plan to separate us from God after what happened in Eden . He knew that One born of woman would crush its head so he came up with this insidious plan to corrupt n defile all humans,especially all women so that no womb is pure n Holy. Babel has sthg to do with that. Anyway, thats my 2cents, applaud your efforyt n thank yoi for your book n vidro "beginners to Bible"..very useful for Sun school. Very good explanation, thank you for writing out this correction. I agree with you and it seems that the video might be sourcing information from the Bible project, which said a similar thing about gods being in God's council and deciding things. There should have been a reference of the Scripture, because that place in the Bible does not say "gods" came down, it says "let us come down" referring to the Trinity. This could really mislead people to think that other gods are part of the "same" team and they are clearly are not.

God and gods aka Sons of Gods are both referred to as Elohim in Hebrew meaning someone who has power over something (ruler), so in this contexts there is God and gods. In fact in Hebrew there is no difference between Elohim (God) and Elohim(gods) , only the context and form of a verb (singular or plural) tells us if Elohim is singular (meaning God) or plural (meaning gods, Sons of God). In English verbs don’t have singular and plural form, so capitalization is used instead to convey the meaning.

"the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when he divided all mankind, he set up boundaries for the peoples according to the number of the sons of Israel. For the Lord’s portion is his people, Jacob his allotted inheritance." Deuteronomy 32:8-9 (NIV) Ancient Israelite religion was not always monotheistic (that is, they didn't believe that there was only one god); rather, their religion was similar to other religions in the ancient Near East: different gods had jurisdictions over different nations and lands. YHWH (the god of Israel) acknowledges other gods, which I address in this video.

The much older Sumerian story says it was the God Enki who confused the languages around the tower🤔.(source "Enmerkar and lord of Aratta" poem). We also see a graduation of the Israelite god Yahweh from a local tribal god to a supreme god as the narrative progresses. But yeah, the book of Genesis uses a lot of Mesopotamian stories and give them an Israelite spin and replaces the Mesopotamian gods with yahweh in the narratives as the head

At 2:34 you say "YHWH and other divine beings, who we will call 'the gods' confuse human language". Where in the bible does it talk about this happening other than Genesis 11? Because the way I read Genesis 11 it seems YHWH confused the languages. It seems you started out from the very beginning of this video with a false narrative and filled in the rest of your wildly imaginative story.
@OverviewBible2 жыл бұрын
The idea of ancient Israelites acknowledging a divine council isn't a new one, and there's internal biblical evidence that at one point, the Israelites believed that when the languages were confused, YHWH was given Israel as his inheritance by the Lord Most High (Deuteronomy 32:7-9). Furthermore, the Babel account has YHWH saying, "Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other" (Genesis 11:7, NIV). If you're already reading the Genesis account with a trinitarian mindset, then the "us" that YHWH uses there can easily refer to the triune godhead, but I don't think it's fair to assume that this is how the ancient Israelites understood this passage. I gotta say, it's always kind of strange to see someone I've never met assume they've got me entirely figured out! I'm almost envious of your confidence. Have a fine day!

Wait, you seriously think the Bible says there are other gods?? What about all the verses that say there is only ONE God? Dude, learn context and it wouldn't hurt to learn Hebrew either. There is no actual Egyptian god or any other god. They aren't real. They are made up. Yahweh makes judgment on them in the sense that they are things like the Nile river and the sun, so Yahweh turns the water to blood and takes away the light of the sun. The princes of the other nations may be metaphorical or may be angels/demons, but not other gods. They aren't divine. Yahweh cuts off the hands and head of a STATUE that philistines incorrectly believed represented a true god. In psalms, that is also not talking about divine beings. "Divine counsel" is literally "congregation of God" meaning there are others present, but only one God. In fact, humans throughout the Bible are called gods, so it may be referring to judges and the reference to "dying like mortal men" can easily be understood as "dying just like all the other mortal men." Alternately, it could be angels to which he refers. Jesus even points out to the pharisees that the old testament calls humans "gods" so considering all the verses that clearly state there is only one God, it's completely incorrect and even heretical to say there are really other divine gods.

The Bible is part ancient history mixed with mythology and futuristic hopes, all tailored to serve the purpose of the Israelites to show them as the only divinely favoured people forever, irrespective of their actions. Christians too ignore the actual teachings of Jesus and follow Paul, who had never met Jesus but claimed to have the true understanding of Jesus' teachings.

We all have a choice and right to believe whatever we want, but if its truth that you seek, the Bible is The Word of God, enduring forever and established in Heaven. The Bible has true authority, relevant historic accounts, present day evidence by the Holy Spirit and archeological evidence than any other book including the Quran, if truth is your aim. The Bible is not about any person or nation but it is an account inspired by God to reveal Himself, his love for humanity, and humanity's slide into sin and its consequence and the solution through the sacrifice of Christ Jesus Our Lord on the cross. God started this work of redemption through father Abraham and accomplished it through his seed, Jesus Christ as promised in Genesis 12. In John 8:34-36, Our Lord Jesus said talking to the jews: Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. Yes, christians do follow Paul's teachings and not the disciples teachings. The disciples disputed with Paul because jesus taught them nothing about circumcision not being necessary and putting away the Torah laws which Paul trivializes as not necessary according to his revelation. "Mark" is a Paulian gospel giving a Paulian narrative of jesus and downplaying the disciples while "Matthew" came along and painted the disciples in a better light and gave a more jewish law keeping narrative of jesus using Mark as his main source but changing the narratives he had contention with. Pick up an English-Hebrew reverse interlinear Bible (a Bible that maps the English text to underlying Hebrew documents) and you'll see that “Babel” is the English transliteration of the Hebrew word for “Babylon”-while our English Bibles make a distinction between the tower incident and the Chaldean city, the original Hebrew text does not. Example: the Hebrew word transliterated "Babel" in Genesis 10:10 is the same as the Hebrew word translated "Babylon" in 2 Kings 25:22.

My friend, you say the Bible is the word of God. Why then are the four gospels called 'according to ....?' which itself suggests that they were written by men, and research shows that though they carry the names of apostles, the authors were not Jesus' companions. The most prominent among New Testament authors, Paul, never even met him. As for the Old Testament, it was written over a period of about 8 or 9 centuries, by different authors, and has disparate and at times contradictory accounts. My book 'In thy seed: the scriptures revisited' (Amazon), or its revised version 'In thy seed: Judaism, Christianity, Islam: addressing some key issues' (Paramount Books, Karachi, Pakistan) deals with many of these questions in detail.
