If you want to visit the town of Baarle, head on over to northern Belgium … or the southern tip of the Netherlands. The town straddles an international border, with half of it belonging to the Dutch and the other half to the Belgians. With dozens of border crossings throughout town, many houses, shops and even roads are split in two. And with two countries comes two sets everything-two mayors, two flags, two council and even two sets of laws. This can make things tricky, but Baarle is setting an example of how two societies can come together and live harmoniously … even in the weirdest of circumstances.

And F2 which you can only buy and on 29,30 and 31 and legally light on 31st of december after 6pm until 2am. this year because of the pandemic F2 isnt allowed bc some people get injured with it, and they need all the space for critical covid patients. Of course other sick people and people that are giving birth can be taken into the hospital.

However the problem is that freedom of transportation of EU doesn't mean that everything that is legal in one country is legal in the other. So if you buy fireworks that is for example stronger than permitted in Germany you might face criminal charges for possession of explosives. Or if you purchase weed in the netherlands and cross the border you can get in trouble as well. Did they actually prohibit ignition of firework in the Netherlands on last 31th December or just selling? In Germany they just banned selling firworks nationwide but not ignition. Some cities banned ignition at public sides though. But you could still ignite fireworks on private property if anything was left from the previous year.

To be honest, it feels like Belgium really isn't a country, more like a loose union of 2-3 microstates under one crown. The cultures in the regions are just too different (French, Dutch and even German).

It's not a matter of religions in Belgium. It's rather a different approach to the way of doing things in Germanic and Romance cultures and it's a row between languages. Hard to solve with a majority of 60 to 40 per cent in favour of Dutch/Flemish when the dominating language of wider international acknowledgement is actually French. People from abroad rather tend to be familiar with French and consider it more important, too. So it's tricky.

well this used to be a real issue in these towns. Most famous is the old bank that had sort of a sliding vault door. when Belgian cops came they simply moved the door to the dutch part and vice versa. That way they never got to check the vault and the finances of their clients. Nowadays the Police forces work together so things like that cant really happen annymore.

i asked this to my friend, he is a officer in the netherlands. He said till some years ago it was possible. People always tried to escape to Germany or belgium. The police couldnt do anything. Now they allowed to keep following you, but they not allowed to arrest you (But they can get permision to arrest you, on the official police forum it says they can arrest up to 5-10km from the border. They have to wait for the police from the other country do to that. There are a lot of storys with people that escaped. i have a friend who did it 4 months ago, drived without car plate. and in germany he parked somewhere put on his plates back and so on. Dont ask me why cuz idk lol. But yes its possible

Right however you forgot one thing. Both of the countries are in the Benelux (Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg) and that makes us an even closer union then Europe. For example: the Dutch police is permitted to perform an arrest in Belgium. If we're both at war the Dutch and Belgian navy will be under one and the same command and we're even talking about combining our military completely. So it's way more then the Euro, it's the Benelux
