X files could have easily wrote and shot that episode in three months. I grew up in Burbank, CA in the 90s and my dad was a writer on a ton of shows and movies. He wrote a few episodes of xfiles and I actually got to go on set a couple times. They busted out those episodes faster than anyone would ever believe.

That was my thought too. It was the last episode of season 1, so it easily could have been written, shot, and edited only a few months before it aired.

As a diver, I always thought it was interesting how at pressure nitrogen dissolves into the blood which of course requires slow ascent to avoid bubbles forming in the body if the pressure is changed too quickly(leading to either the bends or nitrogen narcosis). The higher pressure can also cause oxygen toxicity. The effects of changes in pressure on the body are a very interesting topic.

And the time to do any of this. a few minutes to take on the gas dissolved in tissue, way longer to clear it. I've spent an hour hanging at 6 metres breathing O2 to pay for 20 minutes at 60 metres. Some friends were doing way deeper and then you're into hours or saturation divers where the deco time is measured in several days. There was a BBC documentary a while back, can't post links on KZbin but search for "bbc real men under pressure"

As a diver, you should know that nitrogen narcosis is not caused by too rapid of an ascent. It is caused by the increase in partial pressure of the inert gas becoming narcotic at depth. It will go away as you ascend.

Joe if you're into 'pressure' stuff, would you consider doing a video on the phenomenon of people with painful joints experiencing much worse pain in wet weather? It's theorized to be about the lower pressure but it seems like the last time I looked into it (many years ago) there was still no conclusion about it. All I know is, my knees, hips, neck ....and even this one upper molar that usually doesn't bug me at all .....HURT LIKE THE DEVIL when it rains. And it's even worse if it's also cold out.

The fact that weird events like The Toxic Lady story happened I think is a testament to just how many people there are ok they planet. We don’t often think about this fact that these weird hyper rare things that sound impossible are actually a probe of the population size and how we can’t wrap our heads around numbers that large. 8 billion, when numbers get that large impossibly rate things become inevitable if not common.

IIRC, most tv shows back then wrapped their filming season in March and the eps were done airing in May. Thats's a 2 month window for post production, sO its possible that it was based on the Toxic Lady. US tv show filming is completed in about a week, so that still leaves 2-3 weeks for script development. It's tight but doable.

Love that phrase Joe!, yeah Sci Fi pretty much ignores pressure on planets. One cool detail I finally saw in a sci-fi show was in season 6 of the expanse. On an alien planet, with human colonists just settling it, a little girl gives some of a protein bar to a native bird like species. The bird like creature eats it and nearly immediately dies. Crying she brings the dying bird back to her parents. The girls mother explains that "chemistry is different on this planet, and just like we can't eat any of the native food here and have to grow our own, the plants and animals here can't eat our food because they grew up differently".

@yeoman588 Жыл бұрын
Something else that pressure affects: inert gas narcosis. At high pressures, gases that normally don't affect humans in any way (like nitrogen, the largest component of our atmosphere) turn into narcotics. This is a real problem with deep-sea diving, as you really don't want to go on a narcotic trip in such a dangerous environment. The only way to combat the problem is to use air tanks with special mixtures that don't contain any of the problematic gasses, which is expensive, and you have to breath the special mixture for a while before diving to let the problematic gasses diffuse out of your body, which is time-consuming.

Some high-voltage electronics devices have an upper altitude limit. If the air is too thin it beaks down easier and causes unwanted conduction and short circuits (arcs). Chris Carter used Gloria's story in the episode, he wrote the script in February inspired after the incident. I go this from the wikipedia page for the episode and the source is a authorised fan book from 1996 quoting Carter. Interesting to me and what I didn't know at the time which would have made my head spin cause I was a huge x-files fan as a kid is I went to school with the director of the "Erlenmeyer flask", DW Goodwin's son Matt (I wasn't going to put his name, but his mom's wiki does so). I was invited to their nice house once and jumped on their trampoline. It was pouring rain and they lived on Chuckanut mountain so it overlooked Chuckanut Bay and the San Juans. I think I remember getting a little sick from getting wet. I don't think we hung out again but, we didn't dislike each other. Anyway, I totally would have talked his dad's ear off if I had known though I did meet his mom who was the actress who played Scully's mom but I didn't recognise her. A lot of my classmates grew up quite rich and lived on Chuckanut mt, so I was rather used to somewhat lavish though somewhat understated 90's modern homes with beautiful views out there.

As a chronic migrainer and a person with a trash knee and hip (only 1/4 of meniscus is good, patellar cartilage is shredded, tore my mcl), pressure absolutely is something that can and does affect people. I can usually tell when the weather is going to be like just waking up and getting a sense of how my body and brain is adjusting to being awake. Florescent lights are a trigger. The last set of flights I was on, I had a connector on the return trip. I had a BLAZING headache and body super achey driving to the airport. Got on the plane, we ascended, everything got better. We land, it’s humid, it looks like it had been raining outside, headache and pains come back. Get back on a plane, ascend, and it goes away again. I really ought to move somewhere with higher altitude, I really do feel much better when I’m staying in part of the Appalachian mountains.not all the way up, but partially off. Right now, my house is 30m above sea level.. it just ain’t cutting it.

my first lesson on pressure was during automotive school when the teacher put a beaker of water in a vacuum and I watched it boil at room temperature. he then explained that the antifreeze/water combo in a car does not boil even at 210 degrees Fahrenheit because it IS pressurized, and thus has a higher boiling point than normal atmospheric pressure. you would be surprised how much "science" goes into just being a mechanic. I never knew about ohms law for example until I went to auto school

It was Mulder shoots a bad guy -> there's a hissing sound -> Mulder clutches his eyes in pain and passes out. It wasn't an entire episode built around the scenario. 2:36/6:32 Carter actually started writing the episode over a year beforehand while trying to work human medical experimentation into the mythos of the show, however Carter is quoted in the book 'The X-Files Declassified: The Unauthorised Guide' in saying that at least one scene (in the ambulance when Dr Secare's body emits a poisonous gas while undergoing a needle decompression) was directly inspired by the Gloria Ramirez case. I've also just noticed that the timestamp I've chosen is a Palindromic number, which is about as 'X-Files' as it gets...

You are spot in with your assertion that pressure changes everything Look for the FAR SIDE comic “ Front Porch Forecasters”. It’s funny because it’s true. Standard barometric pressure is 29.92 inches of mercury or 1013 millibars. Changes around that standard do cause people pain and discomfort. My brother was blown up twice in the military and lives on the coast, where fluctuations in barometric pressure play hell with him. In a days time the barometer can fluctuate between 29.45 and 30.30. It doesn’t sound like much, less then an inch but it makes a difference for him. When he travels to the southwest though where the barometer is noticeably more stable he feels much better. I’ll bet you could do a very interesting show about the barometer and a persons health.

You never fail to deliver cool content Mr. Scott. On the subject of fuel efficiency, I believe the nation wide 55 mph speed limit from years back came about as an effort to conserve gas during the 1970’s oil crisis. Have you ever done a video on the many deep sea diving atmospheric pressure experiments?

If I'm not mistaken, one the main changes Fritz made in order to create the first great fertilizer was experimenting with pressure.

Dude! We see much larger pressure differences than airplane rides. They're called HURRICANES and TORNADOS! When you get right down to it, they're just novel low pressure centers in a higher pressure volume.

As others have mentioned, looked into scuba diving. We deal with massive pressure changes with every dive. You might find it interesting...

I totally get why you think its so interesting Joe the variation of pressure is what allows for so many anomalies and intresting things to occur in nature or for our technology. Without "less pressure" or a created vacuum we wouldn't have high functioning light bulbs or thermometers with mercury used vacuums which allowed us to measure differences in temperature earlier in science. It's fascinating because it's a variable alot of people who aren't into science don't account for often and to hear your passion and intrest while talking about....well really anything your truly interested in is inspiring. Thank you for all the work you put into the channel man!

Temperature and pressure correlate with eachother to the point where that is how modern air conditioning and refrigeration system condition the air. There are temperature/pressure charts that tell you at x tempature and x pressure that a gas or refrigeration will boil off into a vapor or condense into a liquid.

I could also say temperature changes everything. Let's think a bit and see how many things we can come up with that change everything.

4:44 a neat thing about Saturn is cause of it's low density it's surface gravity is almost exactly 1 g, so a balloon station there would be comfortable to walk around in. A bigger problem is just that since the air is mostly hydrogen and helium even a hydrogen filled balloon would provide very little lift, and Saturn has super fast winds.

I'm with you. That episode is considered apart of the mythology story arc. BUT I would not consider it too outside the realm as Chris Carter was and is an avid reader of all things odd. He would collect strange stories and articles from newspapers all over the country. And this was massive news back in 1994. So it is a guarantee that he was well aware of the toxic lady.

The writers of the X files was sometimes really ahead of their times. The day that "our town" aired with its Creutzfeldt-Jakob theme here in my country it was the day before the uproar that came with the report that linked C-J to the Mad cow disease. It was so surreal just having watched that episode the day before.

1994 x-files wow enjoyed watching them at the time, man time flies, good episode on how "things" react to each other with a change of pressure, temperature, etc. sure there are plenty more out there like the episode that never makes the news. always enjoy Joe

I like how you handled her story with respect. I'm into KZbin with variable knowledge based content. You aren't going to alienate me with a topic unless you go an entirely different direction in terms of fact checking. Read: if you stop being an ethical, fact-based-to-your-best-knowledge-and-research content creator, then we will have problems. Until then, inform away on whatever strikes your fancy.

If you get the chance, look up video of the "triple point" of water. It's the exact right combination of pressure and temperature such that liquid water will freeze and boil at the same time. It's wild.

As a car person, some cars are really fast with 1 bar of intake pressure and some are not, some blow up the engine. It’s all about design and evolution, just like humans. There are parameters that need to be met in order to simply function, sometimes stretched and amazing thing happen, sometimes the inverse
