I never understood why mini vans in the US are referred to as 'mom vehicles'. They are usually very roomy (more than a limo); have leather captains' seats; power doors; tons of room even in the third row (more than almost all SUVs), more aerodynamic; video screens etc. I've always thought that the mini van platform was ideal for luxury vehicles ... but too many suburban people can't seem to get past their own stereotype.

I’ve done a normal accident avoidance move in an SUV and nearly flipped it! I’ve never seen that type of instability in the minivans I’ve owned. They handle more like a large car. And yes, it is unusually fast since it has a decent sized engine to haul 7-8 200 pound adults.

Maybe you can't find it in eroupe or America, because this one is Asian Domestic Market only. Especially In Indonesia, you would't called rich before you have a Toyota Alphard. For westener / caucasian, you can find the design is weird, but in Asia, that design represent the symbol of luxury and high status. And in 2020, Lexus launched more Luxury version of Alphard, which is Lexus LM 350. And for reference, many major Japanese car automakers have this segment, such as Honda Elysion (discountinued), Nissan Elgrand and Mazda Biante / Mazda8.

You guys are so prejudiced even before you started this review, what kind of review is this??? Can you even call it a review??? We own a Toyota Alphard Hybrid and while we were on our way home from a trip, a massive storm hit which prompted the port to stop ferry rides to our destination. We had to stay inside our Alphard for-as far as I can recall-around 53 hours or so... Honestly speaking it was a scary experience witnessing all the chaos going on outside the van while the storm hit but the next day, we felt thankful that we used that instead of our SUV since the Alphard was so much more comfortable, quiet, and efficient. The engine only ran for a few minutes every hour with the AC on and it was a dream sleeping inside because even with the engine on you hardly hear it due to the insane noise insulation. The built in entertainment system with TV tuner kept us up to date with the news despite the loss of cellular reception and data, we were able to plug in our laptops to watch movies as well. We took baths at a nearby gas station and throughout the whole ordeal (the vehicle was on 24/7) our driver was so impressed because in a span of 53 hours he estimated that the Alphard consumed roughly 13-16 litres of gas. Yes, with the AC and various electronics plugged into the power outlet (including a Makita cooler) 24/7. Needless to say, my Dad was really impressed when I told him about it the moment we arrived. If you guys plan on doing camping and stuff without sacrificing space and comfort (albeit a bit less efficient in terms of mileage) then the Toyota Alphard is the way to go. I wouldn’t mind getting stuck in the middle of nowhere as long as I’m inside this awesome minivan, it’s like riding a business class flight for a few days lol-fun and comfortable. The best vehicle we’ve ever owned, honestly... Don’t mock a vehicle for not reaching expectations it isn’t designed to reach. It’s meant for people who value comfort and practicality and there’s a reason why we love it and why it’s so popular in Asia despite its expensive price tag.

In HK the Alphard/Velfire is a common shuttle. In the Philippines, WAS the "low key" option for businessmen. I looked at the Lexus variant and felt like that was a money grab seeing as that it has essentially the same interior and even a bit less power. The headroom, soft ride and the captain's chairs are definitely the selling points. I have only two Toyotas. My wife and I get driven in a Gen 1 Alphard that now has 170,000 km on it peeling fake chrome and all but still going strong. The other is my GR Yaris Circuit which is my solo time weekend commuter which I use more often now than my NA M3s (e46, e92) just because a) it is small and therefore great for weaving in and out of traffic and b) deals with bad roads more comfortably. I wouldn't say an Alphard is a status symbol. At least until they started tarting up the looks with awful new grills and other graphic bits. The looks have gotten so bad that I might not replace the Gen 1 until Toyota goes back to at least more subdued styling. That grill does NOTHING for the car aesthetically or practically. It is said that it there because certain markets actually clamor for that look. That to me is just sad.

If ya'll ever been in Japan you'd know that those alphards are not that expensive and they are mostly driven by soccer moms or as taxi limosuines in Tokyo. They have good resale value no matter what the mileage is. The US wish they had these.

Toyota Alphard is a big hit in Thailand. It's a versatile and practical vehicle. And of course, it's comfortable. And it's expensive enough to express your social status. Toyota and Lexus cars are known for reliability. Some of the rich people here aren't buying Mercedes and BMW anymore. Oh yes!, many still do. It's just that Toyota has proven enough of how reliable they are! The minimum wage in Thailand is $10 while a Toyota Alphard price starts at $125,000. An S-class here starts at $206,000

I see this class of vehicle in Malaysia. Usually pushing the traffic along in the fast lane on the motorway. It's more of a luxury people carrier than a van. In the west we cramp people into suv's.
@loneranger54253 жыл бұрын
Here in Pakistan , these are a rare sight . Mainly , Toyota and Lexus suvs and some german sedans are considered as status symbols being owned by the super rich or the upper middle class. A 2022 Base Variant Land Cruiser can cost you around $235,000 while a 2016 Lexus Lx 570 sells for $280,000 , and in terms of looks and raw performance those are way better than a minivan . I mean a high end suv looks better in an entourage as compared to the Toyota Alphard

Alphard and Vellfire are symbol status here in Malaysia and Singapore. My Uncle do owns a Vellfire.
@cameractive93164 жыл бұрын
The Toyota Alpha becomes a status symbol in China because most film stars, pop singers and billionaires like it for its comfort and massive space. The price of Alpha is not very expensvie in Japan, but when it is imported into China, the tarif is nearly 100%, doubling the price. And finally local Toyota dealers and distributors raise the price by another 50% because this car is so sought-after.

As an Asian can explain. In Indonesia right here most of the Alphard prices is about 83000 dollars if converted. And even something cheap like an e class costs almost 150000 dollars. Its expensive, but its just cheaper than every other luxury cars (if you can even say its a luxury car since i think the quality is not there).

In China vans are very common and popular. A lot of rideshare drivers use them for airport rides with lots of baggage since the taxi cannot fit anything. Businessmen like this car. Buick, Honda and many other brands have their own vans

The sound insulation in these things are absolutely dire. You hear all the other cars and traffic noise on the road, except for wind noise and tire noise. It’s like the doors are too thin or there’s a missing rubber seal.

actually seems like the body panels too; witnessed several accidents involving the Alphard and Vellfire both in Singapore and Malaysia over the many years... the many airbags won't do justice if the door panels, bumpers and body frame just disintegrate in a crash... guessed some of them who drives these thought just because they're big they can just zoom zoom then crash into anything they wanted to...
