While we are waiting, the SR5 Sequoia is a bargain today. Jeep and nissan both proved that old does not mean bad, bad design is just bad design. The grand cherokee and the patrol (now armada) are two very well designed vehicles. The GC actually is a segment leader despite its age, and has a better layed out interior than many vehicles with redesigns in the past couple of years. This is why, despite a ground up redesign, its not actually that different than the current model. As for the armada, it really went rounds with last gen tahoes, despite the extreme refresh in 2015. The sequoia really just had a poorly designed interior from the get go, and this is a common issue with many toyota's from the 2000's. They have fixed most of their interiors on vehicles when they were redesigned, but this hasn't had a redesign. Same goes for the land cruiser, tundra, 4runner, lx 570 and gx 460.

This vehicle has a center differential so that the vehicle can be driven anywhere with 4WD engaged. The centre locking differential button would force 50/50 power split and would cause binding if used on paved roads. Check Driving Sports TV review as he goes into this aspect in detail. If you have a different perspective please share but I thought it worth noting this as even though the Sequoia is a part-time Awd system it can be left in 4H basically making it a full-time AWD with the option to lock the differential for extreme scenarios.
@AZBuff9729 күн бұрын
There is a significant error in this video. The 4H selector is actually a true "AWD" or commonly known on domestic SUV's as "4 Auto". It is because by selecting 4H the center differential remains open. By selecting the differential locking button on the center stack the vehicle goes into "4 High". This is because the center differential lock is activated by pressing this button. To verify this a driver can drive in a tight circle in 4H without the jerk and pull characteristics of a traditional 4H. Once the differential is locked the vehicle will jerk and pull when driven in a tight circle. These are awesome vehicles. With a quality all season tire highway MPG can easily be as high as 20MPG. Knobby tires are going to bring down MPG significantly. And this highway MPG is very similar to a Tahoe or Expedition. Automatic transmission failures plague the GM SUVs ($6,000 + to repair/replace) and turbo failures plague the Ford SUV's ($15,000 + to repair/replace). The Sequoia will still be running, and on the same engine and transmission, far longer than any other large SUV with lower operating costs and greater reliability.

It’s full time 4wd because there is a lock for center diff which will make it part time 4wd.
@dimdim34903 жыл бұрын
i think he made a mistake. Sequoia has a Torsen center differential and is all the time AWD, not part time, otherwise center differential lock button he showed would be unnecessary. The ground clearance seemed to be increased for 2021 to 12.6 at least according to the canadian toyota website.

I totally get the idea of buying something reliable instead of something with more gadgets and unproven technology. But, I'm not sure a reliable gas guzzler will age well anymore (in most the USA at least). Fuel efficiency is being pushed by governments everywhere and more EVs are coming to the market where I think EVs will be fairly mainstream for new car purchases in the next 10 years. I'd be worried about the cost of fuel and extra taxes on gas guzzlers in the coming years. I'm sure this Sequoia will last 20+ years if you maintain it but I'm not sure it'll be worth much in 10 years and it'll be expensive to fuel and potentially have extra taxes. I'd rather have something more fuel efficient even if it won't last 20 years.

HOPEFULLY, Toyota doesn't kill off this engine in the next Tundra/Sequioa The engine is great, they just haven't invested in the right transmission for it. With an 8-10 speed, this would do a great job for many more years to come The problem with this powertrain are Toyota's fault, not the engine's.

Fuel efficiency vs reliability? I want to see the real math on paper. I don’t know if I can trust GM reliability especially with the cylinder deactivation that could eventually break, the complex transmissions, suspensions, power sliding console oled screens night vision augmented reality etc. those could all break and cost thousands in repairs.

Continuous improvement means you take a platform and improve it year over year and measure the results. Eventually, you get a bulletproof platform like a Toyota instead of a buggy and unreliable US car that gets redesigned every other year to make it prettier. These vehicles could survive a war. Chances are they will survive your trip to mall.

The bean counters at Toyota are responsible for the Tundra’s declining sales, down a paltry 100k units annually. Same with Sequoia, which also stays the same, year after year, except for its rising MSRP. It is reliable, rides good and is cheaper than the rip-offs from GM and Ford. Like my Tundra, the sequoias fully retractable rear window beats any other hinged version. I’d get the SR5 w/o 4wd and add my own wheels and tires and audio. It’s a good deal.

The Disco is a mid-size according to most segment metrics. It's narrower and shorter by a reasonable amount. It's also a luxury segment vehicle so not really cross shopped.
