If you're looking for a full-size SUV and reliability is more important than fuel economy or modern features, the Sequoia is for you. Unfortunately the age of this full-size people mover means that it is outclassed in gadgets, gizmos, ride quality, and efficiency by the newcomers.

Most of the complaints I see are from people with soft hands who need heated steering wheels and air conditioned tooshies and are to lazy to reach out and turn a simple nob. Every issue has been addressed in this old platform except the fuel economy which i can deal with. It isnt a civic. And MPG isnt why we buy these. Old design? Yes. Reliable? Check! Alex, 'Cheaper by the foot than a Land Cruiser' I hope Toyota marketing pays you fair royalties if they adopt your carefully crafted concept. I have a CRAZY idea for the next Sequoia, how about a 2 door Sequoia like those massive Broncos and Blazers from the 70s-80s? Two tone paint would be ideal for that retro-themed variation. While we are waiting, the SR5 Sequoia is a bargain today. Finally, when discussing this 3 ton 'dinosaur', I would argue that the 'elephant in the room' is RELIABILITY across a Sequoia's typical 20+ year lifespan not Fuel Efficiency across a competitor's lifespan that is likely to be far shorter.

This vehicle has a center differential so that the vehicle can be driven anywhere with 4WD engaged. The centre locking differential button would force 50/50 power split and would cause binding if used on paved roads. Check Driving Sports TV review as he goes into this aspect in detail. If you have a different perspective please share but I thought it worth noting this as even though the Sequoia is a part-time Awd system it can be left in 4H basically making it a full-time AWD with the option to lock the differential for extreme scenarios.

I have owned a first and second generation Sequoia, Land Cruiser, LX570 and a Yukon Denali and there is something to the Sequoia that just works. It's reliability and utility are top notch and the usable third row and roll down rear window provide more usability than some of the competition. I also know several people who have had issues with their 2015 GM truck transmissions. The Sequoia just packs a lot into a slightly more compact package than the full size GMs although it could stand to be an inch or two narrower and obviously needs better fuel economy.

Jeep and nissan both proved that old does not mean bad, bad design is just bad design. The grand cherokee and the patrol (now armada) are two very well designed vehicles. The GC actually is a segment leader despite its age, and has a better layed out interior than many vehicles with redesigns in the past couple of years. This is why, despite a ground up redesign, its not actually that different than the current model. As for the armada, it really went rounds with last gen tahoes, despite the extreme refresh in 2015. The sequoia really just had a poorly designed interior from the get go, and this is a common issue with many toyota's from the 2000's. They have fixed most of their interiors on vehicles when they were redesigned, but this hasn't had a redesign. Same goes for the land cruiser, tundra, 4runner, lx 570 and gx 460.

HOPEFULLY, Toyota doesn't kill off this engine in the next Tundra/Sequioa The engine is great, they just haven't invested in the right transmission for it. With an 8-10 speed, this would do a great job for many more years to come The problem with this powertrain are Toyota's fault, not the engine's.

The bean counters at Toyota are responsible for the Tundra’s declining sales, down a paltry 100k units annually. Same with Sequoia, which also stays the same, year after year, except for its rising MSRP. It is reliable, rides good and is cheaper than the rip-offs from GM and Ford. Like my Tundra, the sequoias fully retractable rear window beats any other hinged version. I’d get the SR5 w/o 4wd and add my own wheels and tires and audio. It’s a good deal.

I own a newer Lexus and yes, car reliability doesn't matter much anymore. In 10 years, cars will be much more advanced and with the Dems in power, ICEs will be legislated away. Cars like mine will be obsolete dinosaurs. Why would you care about 15 year reliability when they'll inconvenience ICEs as much as possible. High carbon taxes on gas, banned from cities, etc.

@@Anonymous-ld8ox I completely agree, but at the end of the day everything has to trickle down through bureaucracy. In the US, Biden wants to put in 550,000 EV chargers across the country (the equivalent to 5 EV plugs per currently existing gas station, number wise) That takes time to build, and it takes even longer to get through state, local...etc. Same with crackdown regulations, which I imagine will increasingly vary by state...All to say don't count out reliability just yet (and congrats on the Lexus, I had a '16 IS and loved it)

Toyota simply does not care much for their North American truck market, which is insane because if they seriously updated the Tundra(coming) and this, they could easily double their selling rates. Alex said its 11 years old. Umm no, it is 14. Factoring in the 12 MPG(because Toyota puts 4.30 gears on this and the Tundra) and the woefully outdated interior(Holy Mother of panel gaps!), it is not a good buy, other than reliability and resale. But you have to live with it everyday...
