Emile carried the guilt of the Kid's death for 47 years at the time of this video, and to have the forgiveness of the son must have been the most emotional thing imaginable. Emile wasn't a heartless murderer who deserved to have the son beat his ass, Emile was a sensitive man with deadly hands who wanted to inflict damage but not death on the father for being disrespectful and demeaning. Emile's remorse, sorrow and shame is obviously genuine 7:54 - 8:34. The son is a good man for letting Emile go to his grave with forgiveness.

Reese Witheredpoon Having watched the full documentary, it seems lots of factors played into the fatal ending in the ring that night. Kid was brutally beaten by another opponent in his previous fight. He was in no condition to go into such a tough fight. The man who fought Kid just before Griffith said at the time he was astonished that Kid got himself another huge fight with an elite opponent. His manager appeared to be in it only for the money and didn't have one ounce of care for Kid's health. Then there was the ref. It was his job to be aware of both fighters' condition during the fight. Griffith said he couldn't see Kid's face because he was head down in Kid's chest while he was throwing punches and having seen the footage, that is definitely true. It's a great shame all around. Kid died at the age of just 25. Griffith carried the guilt of his death for half a century. The ref never worked in boxing again. Kid's wife never married again. So much pain and suffering for so long.

@@dannyjamison2462 it's a good analysis but I'd just like to add a bit of input regarding the ref. Ruby Goldstein was considered the best in the world before this fight, and he was in fact accused of stopping fights too early at times to protect fighters. He did referee one more fight after this but he never truly recovered and he retired after that one. I believe it was more an unfortunate case of a perfect storm of bad things happening and we shouldn't be too quick to burn him at the stake for it

Truth to be told, it was a tragic accident. They were fighting, in the middle of a fight you can't know when to stop. Ref's job was to stop when Paret was helpless and can't fight. But, shit happens and it was old times. For me Emile wasn't in the false, he boxed and even thought that Paret went OK after that. The son of Paret just did the good thing there, cuz they are both destroyed of this.

@bobbobert9379
@bobbobert9379 Жыл бұрын
Ruby Goldstein was 100% responsible. He should have been charged with some form of negligence. He let the fight go on when paret was OBVIOUSLY unconscious. But, and race likely played a role in this, Ruby was deemed not responsible by a panel, and that he "intervened at the right time". Ruby Goldstein was a former boxer, and is still in the international boxing hall of fame, despite being directly responsible for the death of another boxer in the ring due to his negligence. It's not just a tragic accident, it's borderline manslaughter on the part of the ref.

I’d say they are both responsible… boxers have self control they know exactly when their opponent is finished and the consequences of their actions… he was smashing Parett’s lifeless head with massive hooks he knew what can happen if you do that… referee’s job is to stop that from happening, but it’s a fighters choice whether to inflict extra damage on a beaten opponent or not ..

My dad fought in the amatuers in the late 80s in New Mexico. He was fighting in Chinle, Arizona and had beaten a guy who later passed on that night due to the blunt force trauma he sustained in the ring. My father never got to ask the family for forgiveness even tho they had invited him to the funeral , he didn't go from fear of being looked down upon. I hope someday he gets his chance to meet the family just like this man did. My father has struggled with it for a along time. This is beautiful and tragic at the same time.

Anger is a VERY dangerous thing. Emile Griffith hit Benny Paret 20 times while he wasn't defending himself. While he could have gotten caught up in the moment, I think it was anger. Too many times I've seen Mike Tyson pull back as soon as his opponent was done. So I think a boxer can tell. 13th round, you're already VERY tired. You'd have to want to REALLY hurt the other person to punch someone 20 times while they aren't fighting back.

A tragedy that is very heavy to live with. Can he forgive himself? Benny's son showed grace and compassion. These men are a true testament of strength and forgiveness.

Paret was brutally beaten by Gene Fullmer less than 3 months before the third fight. Paret should have had at least another 3 months to fully recover.

This is probably one of the most tragic stories in the history of sports. I don't think Griffith intended to KILL Paret, but I'm sure he wanted to hurt hm badly so that he would never disrespect him again in that manner. I know I would have been incensed at someone treating me that way, especially on a global stage. This is proof that the rage of a human being can cause a fatality with no weapon other than bare hands.

Great story and good production but there is an error in that all of the color clips have slight geometric distortion, that is, the image is either stretched vertically or squeezed horizontally. It's not as severe as the usual mistake of a 4:3 image stretched horizontally to fill the 16:9 frame which makes people look fat.

I know what you mean but we cannot imagine how you think when you are in a boxing ring at high level. You know that the man against you can destroy you at any moment so i think that when you see an opportunity to finish him you take it. It must be almost instinctive. It's sad, for sure. But i think the ref is the only one to blame in this terrible story.

Mukoro Oweh, Jr. He's not a man of class. Only a psychopath continues to beat on an unconscious person. Either that ore he so desensitized he could care less. He should have had criminal charges pressed against him and the ref should have been banned from boxing.

"you will LOSE." "If he Dies-he DIES." Emile Griffiths was a Gay Man who had to prove his Macho in boxing. Parret called him "Maricon" (meaning "Fairy") before the Fight. BAD Move.

Sometimes anger gets the best of you, for Emile it was in the ring for some men it is on the streets. Many young men are spending their life in prison from a moment of anger which turned into a lifetime of regret. You control your own destiny, make it a life you are proud of, not just for yourself, but for the people who loves you.
