What makes your reviews so great is it's like we're sitting in the room with you, having a convo about the film. Hope that doesn't come off sounding creepy, but just wanted to try and verbalize why you two are so good. Another excellent review and I'm looking forward to this one!

i loved the film. i wish i could’ve heard more of your insight on it nick. there were so many amazing moments, it’s heavy in dialogue and heavy in these intimidate, shadowy moments. you miss the beauty of that in the way joseph summarizes the film, but there’s soooo much in there to be enjoyed and explored.

Yes for the Titus love! 💜 And as someone who's very familiar with Shakespeare, I understand what Joseph's talking about. The problem is that most actors aren't directed to play the text as dialogue, but as poetry. The scripts are written as poetry, but they are meant to be dialogue. So most of the times, the line readings can come across as stilted. Al Pacino's Looking for Richard actually has some great insight regarding that. Really looking forward to this movie! Thanks again for another great informative review, you guys are awesome 💜

Looking forward to this film. It has the strange characteristic of being the first film by a film director that has been working for nearly 40 years. The Coen Brothers are a single entity in my book and I don't see how he can be only Joel Coen without re-shaping his career as something diverse from what came before and The Tragedy of MacBeth looks like it. There is a strange trend of siblings separations: the aforementioned Hughes Brothers, the Wachowski Sisters and the Coen Brothers. All the while, the Spiereg Brothers are still there after so many horrible films.

We get a strong hint as to Lady Macbeth’s vulnerability when she says that she would have killed Duncan himself had he not looked like her father sleeping. That crucial line helps establish the vulnerability of her character to feelings of guilt, and it makes her transition into madness even more credible and nuanced. It doesn’t just come out of nowhere. She was never just a ruthless killer, and we get the sense that she sends off Macbeth to do things that she herself could not or would not do. That single line, incidentally, was edited out of this movie version.

Love you both. Nick your enthusiasm for Shakespeare is my fuel! I love Macbeth especially the character of Lady Macbeth. Performances live and die based on casting so if they don’t get it right it can ruin it.

I have tea. I work in theatre production for Berkeley Rep Theatre. We did Macbeth in 2015 with Francis (and a GOT actor I can't remember right now). Macbeth was played by the jewel of Bay Area theater for the past 35+ years James Carpenter. Joel was around a lot - and would sit in rehearsals. Rehearsals were spent watching James do a master class on Macbeth, Frances and Joel would sit there, learning from him. I loved seeing James get some validation. BRT does not do classics. We are known for doing new work, political and disruptive, but Francis reached out wanted to do this. The set was a massive tree of life (fantastic) - the play was just ok - James and Francis were good but the GOT actor was blagh and the staging wasn't great. ** I always wondered why Joel was around so much because he didn't do Shakespeare. When I heard about this film, I was hoping James would get something, but no. I guess they got to work out the kinks with us before going on to make their film. I have to check this out, if just to see what tweaks Francis has made.

One of the best interpretations of Macbeth that I have seen is Men Of Respect starring John Tuturro and Katherine Borowitz. It's Macbeth with a mobster flourish.

We had a good time studying Macbeth in High School; to lessen the tragic intensity of it a little our teacher took us to a comedic musical retelling of the story. The performance included (an imaginary) dog named Spot who Lady Macbeth detested & was always shooing away (out damn Spot) until she deliberately force fed him so much he exploded and bits of Spot were everywhere (clothing, furniture, floor covering) so the refrain of the chorus took on a whole new meaning. I always liked Michelle Pfeiffer and Rupert Everett in a Midsummer Night's Dream - maybe Will's comedies are a good place to start rather than head first into the tragedies?

The only Shakespeare I read & analysed at school was Romeo & Juliet. I was excited when I saw the trailer for Macbeth with Denzel & Frances. But sadly, I couldn't force myself into the cinema whilst the wearing a mask was still mandatory. I think I'm going to deeply regret not seeing this on a large screen.

This is probably the only review of a Shakespearian film that’s gonna reference the Hughes Bros and Dr. Dre.. Best advice from this video though is to do some homework beforehand, I gotta admit I was lost a lot of time during the story. Won’t pretend to be a pseudo intellectual and claim this as my favourite Shakespeare movie, that honour still lies with She’s the Man aka Twelfth Night,

I really want to watch this as I love Frances McDormand and the Coen brothers, but I refuse to watch a movie with Denzel in it. He is one of the biggest homophobes I have ever met.
