Also her stylist at the time Kim Kardashian and assistant Khloe Kardashian stole money from Brandy's mother. And then Brandy's brother Ray J, decided to date Kim and then there was the sex tape. A couple of years after that she did a reality TV show with her family that caused more issues. But she had made albums every 2-5 years. I think this film has some good religious elements as it in itself is super natural in a way. Notice how before Solange came along Belinda didn’t think of herself as a mother. Solange brings the Mary mother energy but destructive in a way. Then when Solange is gone Belinda makes this statement about how she’s truly happy with her career (not motherhood). And who is that lady at the funeral who gave Belinda the sly smile? What happened with the sister? Is Norman a twin about to have twins? Will one of those twins die through those mysteriously open windows? Where is that chair going to end up?

I haven't watched the movie (and based on your review I don't think I'm gonna, so thanks for that :D), but another idea that popped up in my mind as a potential explanation for the "Front room" significance would be ...a mask? or keeping up a clean, tidy, presentable room for the guests or as a literal front, while the true shape/state of the house is (sometimes) completely the opposite... like Brandy's character being a mother, a teacher to the world but actually hiding her '"deed"? If you mentioned this and I missed it, sorry - I thought it was an alternative idea :) Also, big fan, I love your reviews and interaction, I always watch your videos and feel like you supplement my need of conversation about movies that I cannot get enough of in my offline life so I feel like I'm with friends, just chatting about what we liked/disliked about what we saw :) love your content 💓💓

You making the point that Katherine Hunter looks more racially ambiguous made me think that the plot twist would’ve been Katherine not only being a supernatural murderer/witch but was a white passing biracial woman who is Norman’s biological mother and her hatred for Belinda comes from Belinda being a darker skinned black woman, that could’ve been a great twist and commentary on the topic white passing, colorism and internalized self-hatred/anti blackness. @@Kevin-rg3yc oh wow you are spot on. She is a very talented actress and director. I have to think that the story was written about a white family and Brandy got the job. The role it played by a white couple with a racist aging stepmother wouldn’t warrant much of a response. It’s problematic when characters are race swapped but the script doesn’t reflect the realities of race. Then you have black folk behaving in inauthentic not representative ways.

Did you guys talk about your ideas/thoughts on the subtext? Did I miss it? I'm curious to know what you think. I was reading some of the comments and I like the ideas of what some have mentioned about the thoughts behind the title. My interpretation or the thoughts the story inspired in me: the "front room" makes me think of "forefront". The priority. Room for the future is being sacrificed by having to prioritize the past. I thought it was odd that they'd make the nursery in the front of the house away from them. Thinking about that now too, a nursery is usually close, while a nursing home is often away. Interesting. Although I haven't yet seen the movie (I used to hate spoilers, but your reviews actually make me want to watch movies more), I think it makes sense that Belinda isn't necessarily directly confrontational (except for the end) because it seems like she and her husband want to move on--they don't want to emotionally/psychologically invest in the past anymore. Both seem over it. The dinner table scene makes me think of it's like a pacifist response--but as in giving the old woman a pacifier. Belinda's postpartum seems satirically more for the old woman than the newborn. I wonder what Belinda's new teaching job is. I also think it's interesting that the mother is a step-mother for Norman. I like it actually. There's a relationship to this burdensome past but he's disconnected from it in many ways.
@ocky88Ай бұрын
I’m also really glad they didn’t take the easy route and go full Rosemary’s Baby or full on demon possession. It really makes you wonder how much of it was Belinda having postpartum mental health issues and how much of it is genuine evil and supernatural forces. Apartment 7A already gave us a poor Rosemary’s Baby story. I enjoyed this movie much more.

I actually liked this movie. In a year full of stale and uninspired horror movies, this was refreshing. It is hard to use that term for a movie with some much gross body horror, but at least it wasn’t a boring remake. I loved the performance of the older woman. I also like the dynamic between the couple and the fact that they didn’t make the husband clueless and frustrating. This movie hit on a lot of themes, but one of the MOST impressive parts is that they depicted the postpartum period realistically. I hate when movies have a woman give birth and then the actress takes the belly prosthesis off and suddenly skinny again. 😂 I also like that it set the stage for why they would bring the mother into the house. My only complaint is that we didn’t need the final reveal. That could have been left as a “did she do it?”

I was gonna come here and disagree but after reading the comments I think I see why I disagree. I really enjoyed the movie and while i don’t think it was a Scorsese masterpiece, i thought it was still interesting and well-executed. But I also never saw the trailer. Only thing I knew walking in was that it starred Brandy. So seeing these comments about how they felt mislead by the trailer helps me understand these takes. I also liked a lot of the symbolism in this movie, or at least my interpretation of it. The scene where she was dressed as the Virgin Mary with her 6 tits out, especially. I interpreted it as she sees herself as a vessel for God, when in all actuality, she’s just a Golden Cow (shown by the multiple tits). Wasn’t a huge fan of some of the gross out, because a lot of it felt unnecessary, but then again, i’m sure grossing out the viewer was the director’s intention in the first place. Overall, solid 7/10. I enjoyed it all the way through, but it definitely won’t be a glowing recommendation lol
