Her hosting the Ghost House show seemed out of character since she saw how others wanted to exploit the Maitlands in the original. However, I never thought she was so weird that she couldn't find someone. For a lot of men she was their first crush so it shouldn't be a surprise that she landed an attractive man. Goth was popular in the 90s.

I like the reference they did when Beetlejuice is marrying Lydia in the 1988 version. He pulls out a ring with a severed finger in it, pulls out the finger, tosses it and tells Lydia something like "She meant nothing to me." Said finger is seen putting itself back on Monica Bellucci's character during her reattachment scene- brilliant 😂

The first third was confusing and disjointed. They should have dispensed with the exposition of Charles' death and not had to use Jones' likeness. Use that recouped time for more on why Lydia and Astrid are so estranged. Agree that Monica Bellucci was wasted in this - I think that character needed just a hint more camp.

I enjoyed this move and had a fun time watching it last night. Does it have its pacing, dad joke level puns, and plot issues? Yes. Is Tim Burton known for brilliant story telling? No. Does he have his muses and finds a way to put his love interests in every film even if it doesn’t make sense? Yes. He is known for (what I call) eccentric gothic whimsy. Most of his past and future characters are represented in each of his movies. The first Beetlejuice had Jack Skellington. This move has nods to Sally and the Corpse Bride. expected a stylistic horror family comedy with Easter eggs and it was what I got. I am also of a certain age where I watched it on television whenever came on and had the DVD later. So my degree of nostalgia is different. This will be a cozy fall night movie for me.

I dont think a sequel without the ghosts of the Maitlands makes sense. They'd have to deage them with cgi but they can do that nowadays. Seeing them finally crossing over after living with Lydia all this time would have been more powerful story than seeing Jenny Ortega as Lydia's annoying daughter imo.
@RJ-nm6qt3 ай бұрын
Jenny Ortega still could have been in it as a an unrelated girl who sees ghosts like Lydia did that she connects with. Maybe Lydia could have just been a local psychic instead of TV star. Then her and the Maitlands have to save Jenny Ortega from Beetlejuice when she accidentally summons him. Its easy to come up with a better story that compliments the original than what we got

@politefan81413 ай бұрын
*Spoilers* I really liked this movie but am also baffled by some of the creative decisions. A few tweaks could have made this movie even better. 1. I would have liked the idea of Lydia hosting a ghost show if it was developed differently. Instead of documenting random hauntings, it would have been better if Lydia devoted her life to helping those on the other side move on, something which could have been tied to the Maitlands somehow. 2. I really like the idea of Lydia and Beetlegeuse teaming up but it would have been better had they teamed up to defeat the soul sucker, at which point Beetlegeuse would have released her from her contract, grateful that she had helped save his soul. It could have also given the soul sucker more to do. The actual explanation given in the film feels like a deux ex machina. 3. It bugged me that they introduced demons fleeing into the real world, which goes against the lore, only to never resolve it by the end. 4. I would've liked to see Lydia grieve the loss of her father, which could have been used to bond Lydia with her daughter, but for whatever reason the film chooses to treat Charles's death as a joke, perhaps due to Jeffrey Jones's legal problems. Had they made these changes, I would've liked the movie even more, but as it is, I still had a lot of fun with it.
@amanda62123 ай бұрын
I do think there was A LOT in this movie, like the ex-wife and boyfriend storylines/arcs didn't seem to do much. However, the practical effects and the claymation were nice touches. I usually see the movies you guys review AFTERWARDS but this time I did not want any twist to be ruined for me or the ending... But as soon as they showed the kid's mother but from the back I was suspicious. And when they showed the father from the back also made it obvious that her new boo (pun intended) was a ghost. But I am not 100% she was not a ghost. Maybe her reading that passage to enter that realm was subterfuge. 2 out of 5 stars. Some of it was funny. I think my younger self would've liked this film much better. Great review guys!
@StevenE-l9y3 ай бұрын
It was a mess. It feels like two movies in one. The whole ex wife storyline feels completely separate from the deetz storyline. I feel like it should have went one way or the other instead of doing both. Could have focused solely on the ex wife and beetlejuice with the entire movie taking place in the afterlife and not include the deetz at all. Or they could have cut out the ex wife story line and focused more on the deetz and astrids relationship with this boy ghost who ends up tricking her which forces Lydia to call on beetlejuice one more time to save the day. Fleshed it out to make it longer and create a better character arch for Jenna Ortega's character. I agree with you guys I did not like her in this. I don't think it was Ortega's fault, her character just wasn't well written.

So I went into this movie very open and really enjoyed it! I'm going to give the original a dedicated watch, now armed with today's appreciation for the 80s practical affects in a sea of CGI. I'm a new Beetlejuice fan because of the sequel, and that speaks to how much of this genre's qualities were successfully captured in the sequel. I liked the french influence film nod as well.
