Peter Parker has had a tough time in Into the Spider-Verse. I explore why that's such a great choice here.

Hard to choose from the movie, but my favorite Peter IS Spider-Girl Peter. His relationship with Mayday is terrific; the idea of a teen hero whose parents know she's a hero and are super used to heroism is a great dynamic. And the comic does show him try to get back in the swing of things with an artificial limb, but it's just really hard to compensate for the super strength and agility combo, plus he's just older and out of shape and has to worry about two kids. It makes sense that he'd settle down and get a job that still lets him help people.
@danielwood6833

I really love how human the reason behind his and MJ's breakup was. She wanted kids and he got scared. If anyone else made the movie he would've broken up with her to protect her or she would've left him as she can't stand worrying about him being Spider-Man. But no it was a real relationship non super hero based reason. I admire that writing choice

Kieran Holmes it’s good to see because we’ve always been like fed that phrase and it’s always going to be linked to spider-man and it’s sad but at the same time interesting, it’s like it haunts peter of uncle ben and how it’s been a staple of who he is as a hero from the start

Coleco 84 i don’t think he necessarily hates it i just think it’s lingered over his career as spider-man and even his life, i just feel like he has a sort of resentment towards it, just because he’s sick of it doesn’t mean it doesn’t mean anything to him anymore ya feel? maybe he’s ashamed because it reminds him of uncle ben. who knows, this peter was kind of in a pit at the beginning of the movie and by the end when we see him show up to MJ’s with flowers you actually see a lot of character development for Mr Peter B Parker

@@mrfaade304 There's a recent 'What If?' issue where (after shooting Ben's killer) Peter becomes the Punisher AND Spider-man, but only kills when absolutely necessary. Gwen lives, crime's down, his worst foes are dead, he's had a far easier career, but the guilt and rage still eats at him, until... he decides he has more "responsibility" to his family and friends to live a good, safe life. Basically what the Peter who fathered Mayday decided. His suit and gear stay in that old garbage can. ...Until Frank finds them. When he's stumbling through alleys in despair. After his family was murdered.

It's been a good year to be a Spider-Man fan! We got to realize how much we appreciate the character by seeing his emotional (but temporary) death in infinity war, a great game on PS4 with excellent gameplay and an amazing story, and one of the best animate films I've ever seen, which just happens to involve Spider-Man! Heck, we even got an enjoyable action/Rom-com Venom movie that, while not being what I consider good, was still extremely enjoyable! This year will be hard to top in terms of Spider-Man media, and I have thoroughly enjoyed it 😊

@@deathking1019 I think it's usually agreed among fans he's protestant Christian-he's named PETER after all. And he often makes Biblical allusions in his comics. I think maybe they just made him Jewish in that iteration? Which is kind of dope and might be a reference to Stan Lee himself who was Jewish. From a quick google search I can't find anything on Mary Jane's religion, it's mostly Peter that's talked about in terms of what his religion is. But I mean if they can have an Afro-Latino Spider-Man they can have a Jewish Spider-Man. It's kind of a cool little moment. Probs more so a respectable nod to Stan Lee than anything though. I also think another point to make on the potential of him being Jewish, is the divorce scene-as someone who was born, raised no longer practicing Catholic TRUST ME getting a divorce is a HUUUUGE nono. Like sinful nono. It's why I love this current Pope so much he is such a forward thinker for the church it's stunning.

@@idleeidolon Also yep it more than likely would've been super awkward-especially since that Spider-Man was so eager to train Miles-he'd probably be the only one in that group to respect him and his potential as Spider-Man when everyone else even Peter B Parker was questioning him. Which is kind of some bullshit considering poor Miles watched Spider-Man be murdered, had his powers less than 48 hours, and was expected to help take down Kingpin. That would be a traumatic couple of days for sure.

You see a significant amount of burnout from people who used to love their careers. After broken relationships and years working overtime, paramedics get burnt out and less enthusiastic day to day. The tragedy of Peter B Parker is that he is what would literally happen to a real person if they were written the way Marvel writes Spider-Man. To never have any growth. To never have any happiness that stays in hand. To always have no grasp on life. Except this Peter has had time to grow old with it, be fed up with it, and accept that his life is suffering.
@hkr0065
@hkr0065 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah his life is quite sad when you think about it. He basically never *really* got healing from his Uncle Ben's death. No therapy. Just a guilt complex and the inability to allow himself a normal life. All because he can't forgive himself for letting that burglar get by. I know Spider-Man is a story about responsibility, but it's also a story about a person who can't let go of his mistakes. Similar to how Bruce Wayne doesnt feel he deserves happiness when he promised his parents he'd swear vengeance on criminals.
@ArcDragoon
@ArcDragoon 5 жыл бұрын
It is even worse than that. Take a look at how Marvel shits on Spider-Man. Peter Parker gets told he's a clone, so he leaves his clone to live his life with the woman he loves. Then gets told later that he's actually the real Peter Parker. And then he witnesses his clone dying in his own arms, he literally witnesses himself dying. We finally get Peter and Mary Jane together, happy and married. But then Aunt May gets shot. And instead of Peter being the responsible one, who has had years of growth to realize what responsibility actually is. Marvel writes him into a piece of sniveling baby, who literally makes a deal with a devil, so that whatever growth and happiness Peter did have, never happened. And as Mephisto told Peter and Mary Jane, even though the events were retconned, their souls will forever remember this. And these are just two of the largest events in Peter's life. Not including the whole Superior Spider-Man debacle, being possessed by a symbiote, being the cause of death for Gwen Stacy, etc... I'm former military, and I know I'm fucked up in the head. I can't fathom how a normal person could go through all of that and not be fucked up.

I find it odd that the alt peter parker died from getting fist stomped by kingpin yet when kingpin does the same to miles hes able to survive that. I get that alt peter was already in a pile of rubble after that battle with the goblin where kingpin was able to cause his death but cmon that peter was strong af. I still enjoyed the movie tho, it's a bit of a downer seeing any spiderman from other universes just carking it i mean spidergeddon has a couple of spideys that died already. To know that they existed in other dimensions leading similar yet different lives i get it's fiction but it's something unnerving having a superhero just dead. Just my 2 cents here.

"Have you ever heard of the tragedy of Peter B. Parker?" I actually REALLY like adult Peter stories, but I get why teen Peter still used oftenly. For cartoons, because of a closer demo audience. For the MCU, having Peter stay in highschool for more than one film, and have Peter slowly grow with the franchise, like we see in comics, and get to keep Holland around for a decade plus. It may take awhile to grt more of them, but there's still Spider-Man PS4, Spider-Man TNAS, TASM Comics, Spider-Girl and Renew Your Vows.

The movie plays Peter's problems as a joke like you mentioned and it's understandable but if you think about it, his story is actually quite sad. At the end of the film he is willing to stay behind in a different universe and save his friends. He sees MJ (albeit not his MJ) and tells her how he feels because it could be the last time they're together. He is the one who probably undergoes the most development in the film and I love it!

Hey! That's a valid interpretation too! Personally, I saw it as him staying behind and sacrificing his life because of a concealed death wish-sorta like an extreme way of running from his dreads while still looking like a hero. That's why Miles had insisted that "it's going to be okay, you got this," while Pete let go only when he remembered his own advice that all it takes is "a leap of faith".

In the very end, he tells Miles he loves him, and then wonders out loud if that's what it might be like having kids… and then we see him go see MJ. The implication being that he had broken her heart when she wanted children but he was too scared, but after spending time with Miles he realized it would be okay, and mustered the courage to try to put his marriage back together. I never saw it as that. Quite the opposite, in fact. I saw it as him renewing his role as Spider-Man for one last act of heroism. He knows that his world can do without a Spider-Man, as he hasn't been there for a while, so he isn't abandoning anyone, but he can save everyone else. I saw it as his act of redemption. That he finally realized his worth as a hero. That is the ultimate hero move, isn't it? Sacrificing yourself for the good of others.

Guys: the spider that bit miles was glitching, therefore meaning that the spider was from another universe. That also means that there is one universe where Spider-Man doesn’t exist, because that spider that bit miles went to miles’ universe. The universe where Spider-Man doesn’t exist is our universe. MIND BLOWING Edit: I’m not a huge marvel fan and you guys know so much, so I’m just going to say that this was wrong, but it was fun to think about anyways.

Jarron Williams they were all will to sacrifice themselves - even Gwen asks towards the climax of the film if she can do it and Pete says he’s already made up his mind - dying to save the multiverse. Remember, originally he just wanted to go back to his dimension - but after bonding with miles and realising miles just isn’t ready he chose to sacrifice himself. Even before miles sends him home he’s willing to see the mission through even at the cost of him not going home just to make sure miles doesn’t die - he literally says “this guy could kill you! I think it's a bit 50/50. Of course, he genuinely wants to save the other Spider People, but he's a bit... too eager to save them, you know? And the very first thing he says when Miles is grabbing him just above the portal is *"what if I mess up again?"* So suicide is def a big factor too.

Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man? I thought not. It's not a story the Avengers would tell you. It's a Marvel Legend. Peter Parker was the Spider-Man of Earth-616, so good at living on the edge, fighting crime and spinning webs, he could use the Spider-Verse to influence the writers to create...storyarcs. He had such knowledge of the Marvel Method he could even keep the ones he cared about from bad writing. The real-world side of the Spider-Verse is a pathway to many works of fiction some consider to be...uneventful. He became so iconic, the only thing he was afraid of was losing his marriage...which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he thought Miles Morales everything he knew, and then Miles replaced him when the writers got bored of him. Ironic. He could save others from bad writing, but not himself.

i really enjoyed this peter parker and i was even more pleased when i found out this is our peter parker from the (616?) universe. it just made it all more real and connected peter to the old tony maguire movies. i know they possibly want to have maguire voice a spider-man character in the future but either way, the way he’s kind of taking mikes kinda under his wing reminds me of the old vibes star wars used to give me. really fun movie and definitely best spider-man experience if you’re just trying to see a spider-man movie and you’re a casual fan (which i’m definitely not i’m obsessed w marvel lmao) but i can’t say i’ve ever been a big comic reader, not that i didn’t like them i just wasn’t really exposed to them, they weren’t really popular where i grew up or with my generation unfortunately.. maybe i’ll start reading comics as a hobby. anyway great video i’m glad you did one on this version of peter. i feel like all the other videos about this movie talks about the chris pine peter parker more? which doesn’t really make sense but whatever lol

When i watched the movie, I thought the interaction between Peter and Miles was going to be a teacher student relationship. However when i saw the movie, it was a deeper bonding because peter was being as optimistic for mile’s true potential when the other spider-people doubted him. He sticked by mile’s side perhaps as a reflection of himself when he started his superhero career. Yes peter was scared of having a child with mj, but i saw that he can be a father from his protection over miles and was willing to sacrifice his life for that. I gotta watch the movie again, it deserved to be watched multiple times.

This has always been my biggest problem with Spider-Man in the comics, or at least with how Marvel writes him most of the time. They don't want the Man part of the character, and only want him to go out on Spider adventures where he fights against super villains. Because of that there are no consequences or stakes because Peter can't develop or grow into something more mature as he learns from his mistakes and really does become a responsible man. However if that were to happen then Marvel would have to work harder to make Peter a more realized character who can't always go out on escapist adventures. Which to me is ridiculous, because that was and has always been the main draw to me as a Spider-Man. A superhero who struggles under the demands of his heroics but still puts up with them because it is the right thing to do. But with nothing to lose or to learn, his character just becomes so flat and boring.

Reginaldus Moes moon It is a problem that pops up every now and then. It’s not that synonymous with a specific writer or run. Just a problem that comes about whenever the writer becomes lazy or Marvel editorial decides on a “new” and “better” direction for the character. I love Spider-Man, but there is no reason he should be having the same problems with money, romance, and school that he did in the comics 30 years ago. Now a reason for this is because comics are a serialized medium with no end point. However because of that marvel will never ever let Peter fully grow up and be one a man. Aunt May will always be on the verge of death, Peter will always have an on/off relationship with Mary Jane, Peter will always struggle to pay the bills. Because if Peter Parker does ever have to deal and confront with these issues and overcome them. Then he would be a vastly different Spider-Man, a kind that Marvel the company is not interested in. Why do you they casted Tom Holland in the movies. So that way Peter can be young for as long as possible and can avoid real and genuine responsibilities for as long as possible.

I still really want a gritty Scarlet Spider movie where Ben Reilly fights Kaine & The Jackal. It doesn't have to be a 100% faithful, beat for beat adaptation of the Clone Saga, but I'd still expect elements from it present. I'm very fond of the idea of Ben succeeding Peter as New York's main costumed vigilante after the latter's death. Admittedly it's a bit reminiscent of what happened to Miles in Spiderverse, but a key difference would be that Ben has no one to mentor him, so he has to, much like Peter at the very beginning of the comics, figure it out on his own. Also, tonally speaking, this'd be a very somber film, since we'd be exploring Ben Reilly's troubled psyche, how he struggles with trying to accept he can be his own person & isn't just an exact copy of Peter. Then you throw in Kaine, whose experiencing a darker version of what Ben's going through, and you've got alot of juicy, engrossing character stuff to work with. Live action or animated? I'm fine either way, but I'm sort've leaning hard towards it being animated since I'd love for it to be a hand drawn movie done by Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack). Don't have a full cast in mind but I'd like for The Jackal to be played by David Thewlis. Think he's a good fit.

The time from the late 80's to just past the Clone Saga was an amazing time for Spiderman comics. (SPOILERS for that era to follow) They really advanced the character: he got married finally, Aunt May passed away, MJ got pregnant, Doc Ock was killed, and there was all that heavy stuff with Ben Reilly (Scarlet Spider). It really felt like Peter was a fleshed out character with a life that was moving forward. I loved the idea of having Peter semi-retire with MJ to raise a family, with Ben taking over Spidey duties as the Scarlet Spider. Since Ben would have fit the unattached single-guy Spiderman thing, they could have kept that younger-theme going for the main comics. Then you could bring out Peter for special occasions or crisis'. But sadly, Marvel decided to literally reverse every single one of those key events one way or the other, and everything went back to a single-life Peter with a still-alive Aunt May. That was one thing I liked about Spider-Girl; it was kinda a what-if scenario if MJ hadn't had a miscarriage.

It’s funny how you mention small details (like Peter shooting down miles when he says Uncle Bens iconic line) suggesting more about characters then what’s shown on screen, because there’s this one part of the movie that’s very similar that I think about more than I should. *SPOILERS BELOW FOR THOSE THAT HAVEN’T SEEN THE MOVIE* Ok, so when Miles’s uncle dies and he goes back to his school dorm, we get a scene where all the Spider-Men talk about how, like Miles, they’ve lost someone; for Peter, it’s Uncle Ben, for Gwen, it’s her Universe’s version of Peter, for Spider Noir, it’s his uncle Benjamin and for Peni, it was her father. But when we get to Spider-Ham, he simply says to Miles how they’ve all lost somebody. You could write this off as him not having a dead loved one and him just trying to console miles, but the way he says “ *we’ve* all lost someone...” leads me to believe that maybe he did lose someone. If that’s the case, Experiencing the death of a loved one must be so much more jarring for a cartoony character like Spider-Ham who can defy the laws of physics on a whim for cartoonish gags. maybe he’s still reeling from the loss, like the idea of losing this person and them being dead is so horrible to him that he’d rather not even mention their name, even when surrounded by people who have experienced the same thing. I know, I know, it’s kind of silly to give such a dark and depressing backstory to a cartoon pig. And to be honest, I’m probably reading *WAY* to deep into it, but you know, food for thought and all that...

oh what you say makes alot of sense i dont know if you have watched the anime re:creators but its an anime where anime characters come to the real world with all of their powers and abilities from their respective animes one of those characters is a magic girl like sailor moon and such from an anime that is for little girls so when she goes to her first battle she is completely devastated by the destruction and harm she causes because she comes from an anime where those things dont happen where the bad guys are defeated in a episode no one dies and the power of "friendship" saves the day

Fantastic video. One of the reasons I love Into the Spider-Verse so much is the writing. this older Peter B.Parker is such a well-written character and I can't help myself but to think that he might just be my favorite interpretation of Peter Parker.

+Captainmidnight In Spider-Girl Peter didn't retire because of a lost limb hell it's even mentioned Reed Richards and Tony Stark were working on a new cybernetic leg for him so Spidey could be good as new but he turned them down and told them to stop working on it. He almost died in that last fight with Green Goblin and his Clone Ben Riley did! He decided to prortize his wife and daughter woried about what would happen to them if he was gone so he chose to retire to take care of them and entrust the safety of New York to the many other heroes there were. He didn't quit because he was crippled he used it as an excuse as he realy quit as he was scared of dieing and leaveing his family behind.

This is more or less what I came into the comments to say. Funny, though. I was always under the impression that Peter lost his leg in the Earth-982 equivalent of "The Final Chapter", but I suppose that might not work chronologically. The original Spider-Girl story was published in February of 1998, while The Final Chapter didn't get published until the end of that same year. It's been so long since I read the stories, so I can't even recall in what issue the flashback to the final battle with the Green Goblin was shown. The original What If or sometime later?

@@JediMB I think it was in issue #47 it was then revealed that everything that had happened in the Earth-616 universe still occurred in the Earth-982 universe, up until The Final Chapter. Where instead of Aunt May coming back, Kaine brought baby May back to Peter and MJ. That's how it was originally gonna be played out in the Earth-616 timeline, but editorial chickened out and had it where Peter finds Aunt May, rather than his daughter.

all the things miles did in the 3rd act of this movie made me dislike hollands run as spidey in the mcu, more specifically the decisions they've taken with his character along the way. now being young doesnt seem like an excuse anymore imo

@@tTaseric i know. i dont mind their relationship, but it makes peters intentions seem slightly more selfish by omission to me. they need to reinforce that moral, selfless champion who wants to save ppl bc he feels it his 'responsibility' much more in future movies. you could argue they technically do this in homecoming, but to me its FEELS like a technicality instead of a defining trait, whereas the idea that he wants to impress tony(at least from the outside looking in) is present arguably to a fault at times. maybe the explicit lack of no uncle ben(his philosophy/after death presence on peter) is the thing that irks me, among other things.
@heliopyre
@heliopyre 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheNoviceOAO you haven't been paying attention then. in civil war Tony asks him why he does it and he replies along the lines of "because I have the power to stop people getting hurt then it's my responsibility to help them". it's something similar to that. wanting to impress Tony doesn't override or invalidate what motivates him to be a hero. he was already one, just an immature one.
@TheNoviceOAO
@TheNoviceOAO 5 жыл бұрын
@@heliopyre my point was they need to reinforce these ideals more(in my 2nd comment), as well as his scientific mind in the fight against his enemies and the development and honing of his abilities more. execution and perception matter, and my point in my 1st comment was it seems ppl excuse these elements in storytelling and in Hollands depiction for various reason like saying this is a young spidey esp, or hes still developing his spidey sense via events of SH, this spiderman in a good MCU spidey etc. if his spidey sense is still developing, for example, they could've been a scene that shows peter formally realising his precognition, maybe self testing and honing this ability himself. you referenced the scene with tony in CW, i dont buy the implied inquisitive, scientist in the making wouldnt be curious to test out his abilities, even after being spidey for several months, and discovering this ability. it seems marvel , when saying that was just trying to overcompensate for the fact that his suit can do everything for him now, actually makes the iron spider underwhelming imo. i just dont want to be another person making excuses when being more harsh on the MCU could lead to a much improved characterisation of spiderman. the more i reflect on various characters and stories in the general, the more i think they all could be so much better if i didnt just accept them as they were at the time their movies came out.
