Great, great video. I have for a long time now been looking to learn more about these influential families which converted to Islam in it's early days from other religions (Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Christianity etc) and the big ripples they made. The Barmakids and the Bukhtishu especially have caught my attention for a while now. Many of these families seem to be non-Arabs and it goes without saying the Persians once more made their mark on Islamic history. It could be argued without their influence and patronage, there would have been no 'Islamic Golden Age'. Thank you very very much, Mufti Abu Laith, for shining a light on these lesser known parts of Islamic history 🙏🏽

Barmakids were not Persians but East Iranic (Bactrian language) speakers who were Buddhists and possibly even connected with Kashmir. They were responsible for bringing a lot of Indian scientific knowledge to the Abbasid court.

You have good storytelling skills, I was engaged the whole video. Do you think mutawatir hadiths can be the solution to replace other hadith collections as a primary source for Islam besides Quran? Are there any problematic hadiths in the mutawatir hadiths collection?
@rumannahami3745
@rumannahami3745 2 жыл бұрын
I thing there is no muttawatir hadith collection
@BrRizzy1
@BrRizzy1 2 жыл бұрын
There would not be any problem with the veracity of mutawatir Hadith, as by definition they are Hadith with so many independent chains that their authenticity is beyond doubt. However, the problem then is that there are very few mutawatir Hadith, not enough for complete guidance. With all Hadith, including mutawatir, the challenge is always to assess their relevance to an issue. Hence imam Malik mentioning authentic Hadith in the Muwatta but then explaining that the Hadith is not followed in Medina.

@@786AbdulSalamKhanthey were Buddhist. They never themselves claimed to be Buddhist as per any records. It is modern scholarship, which has carefully looked at the records and the history of the region of Balkh where they came from, which now hold that they were previously Buddhist. Their title Barmak itself is a corruption of the Sanskrit term Pramukha or Pramukh which means the head or chief. They were hereditary priests of the Buddhist temple at Balkh known as Nava Vihara (New Monastery). The description of this Nava Vihara in early Islamic records leaves little room to doubt that this was a Buddhist temple and had nothing to do with Zoroastrianism. Balkh was also the homeland of the Kushans who ruled over a great empire stretching from Central India to Central Asia all the way upto Tarim Basin.

Wow! My name is Haroon Rashid and I don’t approve of this! 😆 having said that, most probably he realised that they were trying to gain too much power and were beginning to become a rival power base. We see this till today. This is always a problem with dynastic powers and hence why we should avoid dynasties at all costs because it never gives other people a chance to rule and then the only way they can take power is by force. Ultimately, only the one who is more vicious or ruthless will rise to the top. It ends being a gentleman’s game. Such a shame since the family sounded to be proper administrative technocrats and knew how to run a government effectively.

From what I read, the Barmakids were Manichaeans hence why i) they claimed to be of Buddhist heritage in Central Asia & ii) Muslims mistakenly believed them to be Zoroastrian, not knowing the difference. Manichaeism was an ancient syncretic religion, but thought to be subversive however by political powers, as Manichaeans would claim to be Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, etc. depending on the surrounding environment & culture. The organisational structure of the Ismaili Shi’ite religion for example, is remarkably similar to the organisational structure of the Manichaean Church, and the emergence of the Ismailis in the Middle East would coincide with the Manichaeans departure from the Middle East. Hence why polemicists would attribute Manichaean origins to the Ismaili religion.

@@agostocobain2729they were Buddhist but they were not Persian. They were native people of Balkh, the same region from where the Kushans originated. The Sasanid Persians did not have much influence on them. Unfortunately the post-Islamic Persian influence on this region makes people mistakenly believe that the ore-Islamic people of this region were also Persian. They were East Iranic speakers like the Pashtuns. But will you call the Pashtuns Persians ?

@@zzzzz653 Balkh still has Persians called Tajiks today. They definitely were not Pashtuns. The culture of this family are kind, and caring, and that is Persians culture. I’m not saying Pashtuns aren’t, but they can be very crude and barbaric. History has it that they are Persians. Since Persians are also in Iran, and Iran is a Shia country today, people want to say certain figure in Islam aren’t Persians, but they 100% were. Like Al Bukhari, Imam Muslim, Abu Hanifa, Al Ghazali, etc. For instance when you google Abu Hanifas ethnicity now it’s says he’s of Indian origin, and if you google Imam Muslim it says could be Persian or Arab, and same with Tabari. Which means someone changed their wiki page.

Ha Ha. Ladies and gentlements, this is one of the true colours in one of our great khalifah, Harun ibn al rasyid. I think you sum it perfectly, "power tend to corrupt" it happened to all dynasty, furthermore in their so called "golden age" time. Its more vulnerable to lot of leader. The bigger power and authority they have, the bigger the treats of "was was" came. We could analyzing a lot how easy man lost his power and how man, a great man so called by lots of people, could slip into paranoia and become the darth vader kind of things LOL. I am sure and i kind of wish, like all the sinners, Harun in his rest of his life realize his horrible mistake and seek for forgiveness. And He is the merciful.

No sir. You are telling the romanticized version. The Barmakids we're Buddhist. And ancient Buddhist themes permeate Islam today. The kabba and yhe burqa are both themes from Buddhism. Flying wind horses and cubes. The Ummayah were the closest thing to true Islam. This is why they had no problem destroying the Kabba in the past. The Ummayah produce the original quran's, the Abassid pampered with the original and the Abassid invented most of the hadith today. You cannot justify writing Hadith 200 years after the prophet as a first-hand account.
