What always bothered me is that people thought that Kikyo was always out for revenge against InuYahsa. But that was only true when she didn’t know the truth behind her death. That it was Naraku who sabotage her life. Once she learned this she made it her mission to exact revenge on Naraku the man who took away her life and her love.

I always had sympathy for her. The hate for her character isn’t as strong when you’re older. At least it wasn’t for me. I actually love Kikyo’s character now as an adult.

Though I never bought the manga, I read it in the book store back in the day, and came to like Kikyo better than Kagome.

Kikyou was best girl for me from the moment I saw her. I love complicated female characters, which tend to not be written so well or often. I think Kikyou has a really fascinating and heartbreaking backstory and that made me admire her. She is so strong, but also so kind to even the most undeserving of people. She has purified so many different people, even as an undead priestess.

Kikyo’s english voice actress is top tear! It matches her character so perfectly. She’s one of the best and most important characters in Inuyasha. By the end of the final act, she showed time after time how powerful and badass she was.

I also love the voice for kikyo. Its perfect. Regal, soft, feminine... but also commanding and powerful. Her words hold power. She's a very respected and reveered person in life. And they do intention is key when it comes to supernatural/spiritual power. And kikyo believed in her power, and embued her intentions in every arrow

I agree, Willow Johnson nails it as Kikyo in the original and as the Spirit of the Tree of Ages in the sequel. I think there was one other person who did the dub voice for Kikyo, but that person couldn't come close to Johnson's role.

I know right! People always sympathize with Kagome, saying that she is hurt with Inuyasha running off to Kikyo and Kikyo trying to kill her etc. which is because we only see Kagome's part of the story, her point of view. They did not try to understand Kikyo's hardships at all and in the Yashahime series, people are driving me mad because they are irritated whenever Kikyo's name or appearance show up. It's like they have that automatic hate mode on when they see or hear her at all. I'm thankful for Yashahime for even just one mention of her and I hope she will be mentioned and shown (Tree of Ages) more in the future.

At first, I hated Kikyo (this was when she wanted revenge against Inuyasha). Later watching the series I started to like her. She was stoic and seemed cold, but she still tried to help others. Not only that she was probably more sensible out of all the characters and was one of my top ten characters. Rewatching the series again, she quickly became my favorite after realizing Kikyo really ever wanted to see Inuyasha and love him once more even in death. She sealed him to the tree because she never wanted to killed him, while she was alive she was hardly selfish (only selfish thing she did was ask Inuyasha to be human).

I'm just gonna say it... Kikyo is the best girl ever in that show. She was so mature and strong even after everything that happened. When I watched the episodes where it showed her past with Inuyasha, my heart broke for her. She looked so happy and cheerful more than usual and that broke me. I realized then that I really liked her character. She didn't deserve any of that. Kagome just doesn't cut it for me. She's very annoying and immature, always thinking the world revolves around her. I think it would have been better if she went back to her OWN time period because she don't belong there like that didn't even make sense. So, in my opinion, Inuyasha and Kagome were not meant for each other and that's all I gotta say❤.

Kikyo is my first ever waifu, first crush, and first love. Even now that more than 15 years had passed since I've watched Inuyasha, and saw countless animes and reads thousands of novels of all sorts, she'll still be forever my first and favorite waifu, the goddess in my heart. Also, I completely agree with you that her english voice actress nailed it. I still remember back then I would watch all 4 movies of Inuyasha, totaling around 6 hours, almost every day and on a computer shop costing me all my school allowance. Anyway for the greater part, it was because I want to see her scenes in those movies. Its been 15 years years, but I still remember her meeting with Inuyasha beside a waterfalls in one of those movies . And her words at that scene still sends chill to my spine until now. "How Ironic", the coldness of the voice when the actress said that part just perfectly complements Kikyou's equally cold face. She's the entire reason that my type was shaped into that of "strong, independent, and cold" women.

I love kikyo so much, loved her even as a young teenage girl and would cry over her tragic story 😭😭 everyone also always says it's a tragic love story, no, her entire short life and afterlife are tragic in almost every way, except for having felt the love of a younger sibling, which she even felt for for other children reminding her of kaede, as seen in an episode where she hung out as a priest in a random village. Oh, and how it broke her heart that the little girl in said village witnessed her killing those monks, who just couldn't let her stay undead in this world? Aaaaaa right there cried my eyes out. She is a masterpiece of tragedy writing. And then so many, childish if I might add, inu fans hated on her so hard. Kikyo is my favorite female character of all time. It's difficult and time consuming to tell her story and explain her actions in detail, especially considering the differences between the manga and anime. Her development is different in first half of the anime in which she's more nutty and cold compared to the manga 😅 some would say the first anime writer hated her and gave himself too much freedom to change the original work (which got him fired or replaced iirc lol) but I'm in the opinion that he wanted to keep resurrected-Kikyo more harmful and hard-to-read in order to keep her close to Urasue's and Kaede's initial descriptions (evil, angry, vengeful, etc).

I agree with everything you say except for one thing. It is true that in the episode 'kikyou s kiss and kagome's voice' Inuyasha saves kagome but it seems quite normal to me. He wasnt awake and didn't know what was happening and when he saw kagome in a sort of prison he just took a few steps to save her (also it is not very easy to choose dead over life lol). Inuyasha leaves kagome too every time he can feel kikyo around. He can't definitely choose between the two and he never did it (they are the same person after all how could he).

I read once if your soul chooses to reincarnate you have karma debts to clear. In the soul’s previous life as Kikyo she was murdered and was betrayed. Pre-inuyasha, the soul now as kagome has friends, close family, and super bubbly. Dying traumatically is soul deep and kikyo’s pain/resentment/anger embodied in a golom must be heartbreaking. Because clearly kikyo wanted to always help people.

But Inuyasha didn’t choose Kagome over her except for hat episode where she literally tried to take him to hell with her. There’s an episode when Inuyasha tells KAgome that he chooses Kikyo and that she should go back to her own era and she’s devastated by that. He tells her that if Kikyo wants him dead then he’ll follow her in death. Also after Kikyo dies (the final time lol) they get to a castle with some flowers and stuff and there’s an evil character there that tells Inuyasha that the woman he most loved on earth has just died - and Kagome is once again devastated by that.

When she was a revenant she was truly scary. As the series went on, though, she was more just a distant helper and it seemed the writer didn't know how to resolve her story. She got eliminated again, and again, and finally she just fades away to light. I felt she deserved a hand in Naraku's death.

If a second part to this video comes out, I think it would be important to cover an in-depth analysis over the changes from the original manga to the Sunrise adaption. Kikyo in the manga drops her tirade of hate as soon as she learns the truth of their betrayal comes out, while the anime depicts her as rather unfeeling and evil. Another note is that the director of the anime Ikeda stated in an interview he was not sure what do with Kikyo's character and thinks it would have been better if she died.

It might’ve been a little less if the anime was shorter. The length and the filler probably played a role in dragging out the wars. Not that I would ever give up any episodes of InuYasha. I love more content and I enjoyed the characters so much I didn’t mind watching filler. Especially when the episodes were in Kagome’s world! I lived for those episodes with InuYasha in the modern era!

I love this show, but there are many inconsistencies in it. Later in the show, Naraku wasn’t able to hurt Kikyo because of Onigumo’s Heart remaining a part of him. However, 50 years ago Naraku took on Inuyasha’s form and fatally wounded her.

I'm weird. What bothered me after watching this was how old Kaede was made to look. If she was around 12-14 at the time of Kikyo's death, and Kikyo was dead 50 years already, Kaede would be 62-64 around the time of InuYasha's events. She probably shouldn't look that old and bent yet.

I'm so upset that her almost full story was only revealed on 146 episode cuz tbh I hated her before it without even knowing what she was going through before death... I have no idea why but she was shown as an arrogant person in the first episodes and it made a really bad impression on me
