Today's solved true crime case is on child star & movie actress Judith Barsi, her mother Maria Barsi and her father Jozsef Barsi. Judith starred in childhood nostalgia 80s films such as The Land Before Time where she played Ducky, All Dogs Go To Heaven where she played Anne-Marie, and JAWS: The Revenge where she played Thea Brody. Judith was also in several other commercials for McDonalds, lays and jif, and starred in many TV series shows such as cagney and lacey, punky brewster, slam dance and fatal vision.

When you put yourself out there to help someone as an adult with another adult that you know needs help, and they don’t accept the help and still go back into that environment, it is hard to help someone in that situation. Even nowadays, it can still be hard to help someone who isn’t desperate enough to leave the situation. Not to mention this was in a time period where a lot of these things were not understood well by the public. So the adults stopped believing her because they weren’t educated about how women in abusive situations will act. I don’t think though that anyone can fathom why they didn’t take it way more serious with a child involved, even in those times. Like you said, it is really sad and tragic. 😔😔😔

Hailey Tanguay I never said the victim wanted to be there. I speak of this from experience when I failed to help a friend that I fought so hard to help escape from the situation. She got so scared that she ended up ruining the plan that I helped create with another friend that escaped from an abusive relationship, and she ended going back to him that day. Months after that, he did eventually got the idea and left her for another woman. She didn’t want to go back to him, but she didn’t have much of choice given her whole situation. I couldn’t help much as I wanted other than that plan since I still lived with my family and wouldn’t be very open on taking someone else in.

Yeah, like what went through that little girl's head during the audition of the movie "All Dogs Go To Heaven" that caused her to break down into such an intense anxiety attack? Did her POS father antagonize her with the title of movie like "You're a dog, but you don't get to go to Heaven when I kill you and mommy." Drunk abusers LOVE to antagonize people with that kind of stuff. If it's a little girl, that kind of thing could roll around in your head for a while. I hope she and her mother are resting in peace ✌ 🙏 with those beautiful new gravestones those people commissioned for them.

On the other hand, she could have gone the route that many child actors do. Being involved in drugs, alcohol, or just ending up without work because they aren't "cute" anymore. The thing where Judith breaks down while “all dogs go to heaven” was being made during Anne Marie’s song segment, Judith was looking at the song she had to sing which is basically about wanting a loving family with a nice mommy and daddy, which would be a perfect life contrast to Judith’s which is why they had to get another child to sing it because Judith couldn’t and would have a breakdown and begin to cry. This is probably because Anne Marie’s family and home situation is so much like hers and the song could have been how Judith felt which is very sad to think about. This caused concern so Judith would be taken to a child psychologist to talk about it so it makes sense. Poor little child, she never got that chance
@amylee8969
@amylee8969 Жыл бұрын
Her story is sad but what more sad is all the people who failed her and the mom. The child was apparently exhibiting odd and depressed behavior because of it and failed to investigate. The Hollywood producers were more concerned about her missing work and losing money than about their safety. The people who were aware of the dad abusing the mom and daughter naively turned a blind eye after the dad justified is actions as “normal discipline”. Hardly anyone bothered to check up on the mom and daughter.

Narcissists are the worst especially with addictions. Whether it is gambling, alcohol, drugs or both. You get people with addictions who are only a danger to themselves and are harmless as not everyone is awful. With the narcissists, addictions makes them even worse than they already are. They will scream so neighbours hear, they will smash property belonging to everyone but themselves. Someone you are supposed to rely on and grow from. Fortunately I have a great mother. Unfortunately not everyone had that such as Judith. Even with a good parent, they might not necessarily have the mental or physical strength to stop the other parent. One can say are partially to blame but life is not black and white despite what judges and the jury believe. They make snappy judgments such as taking away children from goof families for missing children, which does far more damage to a child than missing a bit of school as it destroyed a family and that child will end up being abused in various ways by other children and authorities in general. They also make children stay with abusive families despite the evidence and warnings by virtually everyone who knows the child. If someone protects the child, they get arrested for trying to do more for the child than the worthless authorities. Some people were just born to be awful people. Truly evil people. People say having villains be evil for the sake of it is cartoonish yet we live among like that. Where they had a good upbringing and everything but somehow they seek to harm people and destroy everything and everyone. It is more understanding (although not an excuse) if they suffered PTSD through an event or something that made cold towards people but I do not see how one can murder their own child or harm their loving wife/husband or whatever the status may be. I know their logic is warped and everything but killing your own kin for nothing is awful. Possibly some of the darker cases out there.

Probably why he killed himself, killed her realized she would no longer be bringing in money and the offed himself. He tried to cover it to start which makes me think he originally planned on trying to hide the murders. She didn’t make enough money to live off of forever and people would start snooping soon enough. He hadn’t truly thought it through. Had he really thought it through his best bet would have been to kill Maria and continue using Judith as his little money maker.

I'm not without sympathy for her mom but after awhile I got frustrated with her cuz she had so many people and opportunities to get help and get somewhere safe away from this psycho but she just kept going back. Where is the point where her maternal instinct to protect her kid came in? Instead she cared more about the house, jewelry, and material garbage ahead of her own daughters safety. And yes the case absolutely should have been followed up on to make sure she divorced her husband and the kid was safe.

Unfortunately, people living in an abusive relationship most often won't leave because they're afraid of what'll happen if they actually end up leaving. They're afraid that their partner ends up hunting them down and hurting and/or killing them and their children. They might also still love their wife or husband even though their family life might be pure hell and think that it might be better if they just stay. Judith's mother definitely should have taken her daughter and left while they had the chance, but in most cases it just doesn't happen. I grew up in an abusive household, my dad used to drink a lot. There were death threats, especially towards my mom. Christmases and all other holidays were hell, they were just an excuse to drink. Whenever he was drunk, I never knew exactly what would be going on at home when I came home from school. On two occasions we had to flee to the neighbor's house to call the police when he was getting out of control and breaking things. On so many occasions I wished they'd just divorce. They are still together to this day, and while he still sometimes drinks these days, it's nowhere near as bad is it used to be. Because of what my life was like growing up, I've sworn to myself that I'm never going to drink alcohol. I'm 32 and I've never had a single drop, and I'm much happier this way. Most importantly I never want to end up like my dad. I want to be better.

@@Duckkis I understand that abusive marriages (or relationships in general) can lead to this type of stuff Where the abused doesn't wanna leave, either through Stockholm syndrome or through fear. However If i find out my significant other has put a knife to my child's throat and threatened to kill me and her, I'm sorry but that's the final straw and I'd do anything in my power to not only get my child away from this person but to make sure that person is atleast legally punished I know, I've never personally been in an abusive relationship and i understand the physiological effects of one. However surely there must be some line logically drawn, even if I was scared for my own life from this abusive partner, I would much rather risk my life if it meant saving my child. Loving parents will do whatever it is they have to do if it means keeping their children safe, it's a natural parent instinct that I find hard to believe can be erased from an abusive relationship. I'm not saying what happened was this mother's fault, however she definitely could have done alot more than she did. She doesn't deserve blame but her lack of actions still should be addressed as she still was a grownup with the responsibilitys of a parent

I'm only a few minutes in, but wanted to correct some things: 1. Maria was incredibly harsh with Judith and constantly coached her into being a "perfect" little girl. Judith didn't have a choice in whether or not to become an actress, so it's not really fair to say she liked it. She was living her mother's dream. 2. Maria got together with Jozsef because he showered her with gifts. She stayed with him because she enjoyed the lifestyle he provided her. 3. Maria took Judith to that skate rink regularly on purpose in hopes of Judith getting recognized by someone in the business. She had coached her daughter ahead of time to laugh loudly and act like she was having the time of her life. 4. While Jozsef was solely to blame for the murders, of course Maria knew what he was capable of. She had seen him abuse her and Judith, had heard him threaten to burn the house down, and had countless warnings from concerned friends. It's not really honest to say that Maria "did everything right". She might have spoken to friends about what was happening, but when they encouraged her to leave and offered her a place to stay, she ignored it. They displayed their horror and concern, but she ignored it. In fact, the one time she called police, was due to her abuse, not Judith's. There was no physical evidence, as the abuse hadn't been recent. Then she dropped the case.

You have to understand how abusers see the world. In their minds, they are fully realized human beings with every right to everything they want, and they may acknowledge some other people in their lives are the same, but their partner and their children are property. Their spouse is there to provide whatever they want whenever they want it - food, sex, housework, children, companionship, etc. Children are like cars - something to show off, to make themselves look better, and to serve their needs as well. Abusers don't see their children as unique human beings with their own wants, needs, desires, etc. They are extensions of themselves, and if they deviate from what the abuser wants, or they stop being useful, then they are useless. Joseph was resentful and jealous of his daughter because she was more successful than him. Which, on the one hand made him look good, but on the other hand it makes him look bad. Plus, her acting career gave both her and her mother an outlet to get away from him and have their own Independence, which is unacceptable, however he also needed the money to meet his own desires. From that perspective, of course he was angry and conflicted and jealous. He didn't see Judith as a person, she was *his*. His property, his workhorse, and she was starting to defy him.

The more I hear about Joseph, the more I hate him. What an evil, wicked man. I went through child abuse and I sympathize so much with Judith, especially with her father physically threatening to kill her/cause her great bodily harm and then also how she was pulling her hairs out and having disordered eating. When you got to the part describing her breakdown while at the audition it hit so close to home for me. I moved out of their house in my early teens and since then my parents- both were physically and mentally abusive- sought tons of help and treatment.They're completely different people now than they were and, though it took a lot of work I now have a good relationship with both of them. I wish more children going through abuse had the same experience, but, though it does happen, it's extremely rare and I hate that. I feel like a lot of times the abuse victims stay, just hoping that their partner or parent will change. I think that was a lot of Maria's problem- she wanted the man she fell in love with back and held on to the hope of that eventually happening- it just sucks so much how she and ESPECIALLY her daughter had to suffer because that was the choice she made. There were so many chances they had to get away and it kills me. Poor Judith was innocent and she was so utterly failed by both her parents

I 100% agree, though if possible, try to find proof first. My sister accused my dad of this, an the case had been dragged on for two years. Nothing ever happened and there was no proof, but we all suffered for two years because she has psychosis and hallucinations. So, try to see if you can find proof, but don't ignore it at all if someone says they're being abused.

Hell, I had a pink bike. I even looked like her and had the same haircut. And my favorite character in The Land Before Time was Ducky. I got really good at mimicking voices because of Judith Barsi's performance. I had **no** idea she was murdered.

Guys, I honestly had the same knee jerk reaction.... “where the f was everyone? Why did no one help...f f f f “ but honestly what could anyone else have done? Besides manhandling them out. Other mothers told her to get out neighbours told her to get out and the mum was offered safe places to stay. I get the abusiveness and mental manipulation but honestly she had chances to leave and she didn’t, even for the sake of her daughter. I’m not blaming the mum it’s just a tragic situation.

Rest in peace, Judith Eva Barsi. No one can ever hurt you again now. I can't read or hear about her and what happened to her without crying. This little angel had so much potential, she had a wonderful future ahead of her, but so many people in her life failed her and and her sorry excuse of a father stole everything from her in the blink of an eye. My only relief is she was asleep during it and she never knew what happened. I can only hope wherever her father is in the afterlife, he gets the punishment he deserves for murdering his wife and daughter in cold blood.

Mica you seem big hurt by my logical answer. But then again you must know MORE about their circumstances. Obviously not every abuse victim has the means and opportunities as Maria. But seeing that she did, and her husband didn’t have that much control. Maria had the opportunity to move out but out of selfish reasons she didn’t think it was fair he kept the 3 bedroom home. Also seeing that Judith was a actress, Maria could’ve asked the movie studio for security. Btw restraining orders don’t cost that much. If she was serious about getting her and Judith away from him she would’ve gotten a restraining order and filed for divorce. All making sure to notify security of the circumstances and banning him from the movie studios. Anyways I’m not gonna go back and forth with you, at the end of the day she had plenty of resources to get away. However at the end of the day every adult in Judith life, failed her.

I know the mother is a victim too but she absolutely failed her daughter. When Judith told her mom in New York that her father held a knife to her throat and threatened her, she should've left Judith with her uncle to take care of shit. Supposedly going back because you want the house and jewelry is awful. Every adult in this child's life failed her except the agent who got her a therapist. The murders were 100% the father's fault. But there were just so many failures leading up to that

i dont see any point in pointing judgmental finger towards a battered woman whose life was living hell until the day she was violently murdered. guess it's good for women to know if they get into a relationship with a man who's capable of murder, it's on your hands if you're scared to leave because he point blank told you he'd kill you and your child if you even tried. very epic, very reasonable, totally not victim blaming, ignorant and misogynist to ignore the statistics of most domestic violence murders happening after the victim tries to leave. your comment is great and totally constructive and needed.

Just hearing about how many times the mother and the girl told people about what happened in their house and noone taking them seriously seriously pisses me off. I personally had a friend in high school who's mother got into a relationship with my fathers eldest brother. My dads brother was a drunk, he ruined himself so much that he doesn't even resemble my dad or the rest of their brothers, an example would be that my dad and all of his brothers are big guys but his eldest brother was nothing but skin and bones. Anyway he never physically harmed my friend but he abused her mentally by always telling her that she would never amount to anything, that she dressed like a slut and always complained about her around me and the family. I never talked back to him because I was 17 and my family had brought me up to respect our elders but that all changed the week I turned 18, not even a week after my 18th birthday my friend calls me crying and begging me to help her and I try to ask her what was wrong but she wouldn't calm down, after a few minutes she finally said something, and It caused me to run over to her house Immediately, she said, "It won't stop bleeding" I didn't know what had happened then but frankly I didn't give 2 shits and after quickly grabbing some bandages and whatever medicine I could shove into my pockets I ran over to her house and entered her room, what I saw nearly sent me over. She was curled in the corner of her room, there was blood all over her body and she was clutching her wrist breathing hysterically. I patched her up and cleaned up as much as I could, while also taking the knife that was on her floor and shoving it into my pocket. After I got her to calm down and tell me what happened I told her to cover her ears and wait for me to come back in, I then closed her door and went into his room where he was laying on the bed acting like everything was fine and locked his door while I tried to talk with him, after a few minutes of him cutting me off in every subject relating to my friends, his step daughter's well-being and continuing to talk trash about her I couldn't take it anymore and beat the ever loving shit out of him. ( mind you I'm not that big, I'm a female about 110 pounds and a height around 5,7 and have no muscles to show for but the fact that I could have pushed and held him down says something about how badly he's trashed his body ) I was so angry that I wouldn't stop until he stopped talking over me and paid attention to what I had to say. Among other things I told him that it was either the alchohol or family and screamed in his ear to PICK ONE! after ensuring that my friend was safe by locking him in his room and removing any weapons he had into his garage and waiting for her mom to come home I walked back home and proceeded to cry like a baby. I'm not trying to paint myself as a hero or a good person. Main thing I am trying to say is, no matter how fake it may sound always take matters like abuse seriously and take action to ensure that your loved ones are safe! Because if you ignore obvious signals for help then your friend, family even acquaintance could end up like this poor girl and her mom. That man was a peice of shit and a coward for taking his own life afterwards.

I live next to an abusive household and for the past two years my mom and I have heard the man threaten his wife and kids. Literally heard him beat them. There isn’t a day where he isn’t screaming at the top of his lungs at them. The children are constantly crying. It’s disgusting the things we hear. I have called the police multiple times and nothing ever happens because every time the wife and husband say nothing is wrong. Even neighbors across the street have called. Their eldest daughter who was one of my friends ran away at 17 because of this. We called our landlord and she told them “your lease is up in a month if u don’t stop you’ll be kicked out”. It was quiet for that month but then went right back to normal. The last time I called they left a literal note on our window saying “stop calling we aren’t abusive to our son. We always uplift him. Yes we are loud sometimes but every family is loud” “just DEAL with it”. So now we are done calling because the wife chooses not to leave this abusive relationship with her children. You can’t help people who don’t want to be helped. Sometimes I’m afraid he’ll try to get into our house for calling the cops.

And her mom had so many people who were willing to help her and Judith get out of that situation but she chose not to and made her acting career more of a priority. Literally everyone failed her :(

This is actually the first time I’ve heard the full story and it just breaks my heart. I loved her voice in All Dogs go to Heaven. I had an abusive childhood myself and there was just something about her voice that was soothing and brought me peace. Little did I know that she was suffering abuse also 😢

I personally don’t think Judith’s case should of been dropped until Maria and Judith had successfully left and were safe. Until they reached that point they were still in the abusive situation and anything could of gone wrong which it unfortunately did.

This. As a social worker, I can understand the workload is a lot, however they should have waited kept the case going until Maria and Judith successfully left him and after ensuring they are away from Joseph.

Agree. I also work in the field, and every agency/practice I've been with has required a transition to plan for our clients/cases - meaning, we support them until they have completely and successfully transitioned to the new chapter in their lives. Not just until they tell us they have a plan or have taken some steps. And even then you still try to do follow ups to ensure that they are stable (if you continue to have authorization to do so, at least). Do not abandon your cases.

I think, ideally Judith should have been put into foster care until Joseph was out of the picture, no child should have to live in a house with an abuser, even just being the same house as him when he *wasn't* being violent and verbally abusive must have been very mentally straining for both of them.
